Breast cancer is a lethal illness that has a high mortality rate. In treatment, the accuracy of diagnosis is crucial. Machine learning and deep learning may be beneficial to doctors. The proposed backbone network is critical for the present performance of CNN-based detectors. Integrating dilated convolution, ResNet, and Alexnet increases detection performance. The composite dilated backbone network (CDBN) is an innovative method for integrating many identical backbones into a single robust backbone. Hence, CDBN uses the lead backbone feature maps to identify objects. It feeds high-level output features from previous backbones into the next backbone in a stepwise way. We show that most contemporary detectors can easily include CDBN to improve performance achieved mAP improvements ranging from 1.5 to 3.0 percent on the breast cancer histopathological image classification (BreakHis) dataset. Experiments have also shown that instance segmentation may be improved. In the BreakHis dataset, CDBN enhances the baseline detector cascade mask R-CNN (mAP = 53.3). The proposed CDBN detector does not need pretraining. It creates high-level traits by combining low-level elements. This network is made up of several identical backbones that are linked together. The composite dilated backbone considers the linked backbones CDBN.

On the Analyses of Medical Images Using Traditional Machine Learning Techniques and Convolutional Neural Networks

Simple Summary Breast cancer is the most common cancer, which resulted in the death of 700,000 people around the world in 2020. Various imaging modalities have been utilized to detect and analyze breast cancer. However, the manual detection of cancer from large-size images produced by these imaging modalities is usually time-consuming and can be inaccurate. Early and accurate detection of breast cancer plays a critical role in improving the prognosis bringing the patient survival rate to 50%. Recently, some artificial-intelligence-based approaches such as deep learning algorithms have shown remarkable advancements in early breast cancer diagnosis. This review focuses first on the introduction of various breast cancer imaging modalities and their available public datasets, then on proposing the most recent studies considering deep-learning-based models for breast cancer analysis. This study systemically summarizes various imaging modalities, relevant public datasets, deep learning architectures used for different imaging modalities, model performances for different tasks such as classification and segmentation, and research directions. Abstract Breast cancer is among the most common and fatal diseases for women, and no permanent treatment has been discovered. Thus, early detection is a crucial step to control and cure breast cancer that can save the lives of millions of women. For example, in 2020, more than 65% of breast cancer patients were diagnosed in an early stage of cancer, from which all survived. Although early detection is the most effective approach for cancer treatment, breast cancer screening conducted by radiologists is very expensive and time-consuming. More importantly, conventional methods of analyzing breast cancer images suffer from high false-detection rates. Different breast cancer imaging modalities are used to extract and analyze the key features affecting the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. These imaging modalities can be divided into subgroups such as mammograms, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, histopathological images, or any combination of them. Radiologists or pathologists analyze images produced by these methods manually, which leads to an increase in the risk of wrong decisions for cancer detection. Thus, the utilization of new automatic methods to analyze all kinds of breast screening images to assist radiologists to interpret images is required. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely utilized to automatically improve the early detection and treatment of different types of cancer, specifically breast cancer, thereby enhancing the survival chance of patients. Advances in AI algorithms, such as deep learning, and the availability of datasets obtained from various imaging modalities have opened an opportunity to surpass the limitations of current breast cancer analysis methods. In this article, we first review breast cancer imaging modalities, and their strengths and limitations. Then, we explore and summarize the most recent studies that employed AI in breast cancer detection using various breast imaging modalities. In addition, we report available datasets on the breast-cancer imaging modalities which are important in developing AI-based algorithms and training deep learning models. In conclusion, this review paper tries to provide a comprehensive resource to help researchers working in breast cancer imaging analysis.

The Role of Deep Learning in Advancing Breast Cancer Detection Using Different Imaging Modalities: A Systematic Review

Breast cancer is one of the most common invading cancers in women. Analyzing breast cancer is nontrivial and may lead to disagreements among experts. Although deep learning methods achieved an excellent performance in classification tasks including breast cancer histopathological images, the existing state-of-the-art methods are computationally expensive and may overfit due to extracting features from in-distribution images. In this paper, our contribution is mainly twofold. First, we perform a short survey on deep-learning-based models for classifying histopathological images to investigate the most popular and optimized training-testing ratios. Our findings reveal that the most popular training-testing ratio for histopathological image classification is 70%: 30%, whereas the best performance (e.g., accuracy) is achieved by using the training-testing ratio of 80%: 20% on an identical dataset. Second, we propose a method named DenTnet to classify breast cancer histopathological images chiefly. DenTnet utilizes the principle of transfer learning to solve the problem of extracting features from the same distribution using DenseNet as a backbone model. The proposed DenTnet method is shown to be superior in comparison to a number of leading deep learning methods in terms of detection accuracy (up to 99.28% on BreaKHis dataset deeming training-testing ratio of 80%: 20%) with good generalization ability and computational speed. The limitation of existing methods including the requirement of high computation and utilization of the same feature distribution is mitigated by dint of the DenTnet.

Therefore, in this work, we focused on the design of metaheuristics with deep learning based breast cancer classification process. The proposed model is found to be an effective tool to assist physicians in the decision making process. This study introduces a novel chaotic sparrow search algorithm with a deep transfer learning-enabled breast cancer classification (CSSADTL-BCC) model on histopathological images. The presented CSSADTL-BCC model mainly focused on the recognition and classification of breast cancer. To accomplish this, the CSSADTL-BCC model primarily applies the Gaussian filtering (GF) approach to eradicate the occurrence of noise. In addition, a MixNet-based feature extraction model is employed to generate a useful set of feature vectors. Moreover, a stacked gated recurrent unit (SGRU) classification approach is exploited to allot class labels. Furthermore, CSSA is applied to optimally modify the hyperparameters involved in the SGRU model. None of the earlier works have utilized the hyperparameter-tuned SGRU model for breast cancer classification on HIs. The design of the CSSA for optimal hyperparameter tuning of the SGRU model demonstrates the novelty of the work. The performance validation of the CSSADTL-BCC model is tested by a benchmark dataset, and the results reported the superior execution of the CSSADTL-BCC model over recent state-of-the-art approaches.

For people all around the world, it has now become a huge issue and a threat to their safety and wellbeing. Breast cancer is one of the major causes of death among females all over the globe, and it is particularly prevalent in the United States. It is possible to diagnose breast cancer using a variety of imaging modalities including mammography, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and biopsies, among others. To analyze the picture, a histopathology study (biopsy) is often performed, which assists in the diagnosis of breast cancer. The goal of this study is to develop improved strategies for various CAD phases that will play a critical role in minimizing the variability gap between and among observers. It created an automatic segmentation approach that is then followed by self-driven post-processing activities to successfully identify the Fourier Transform based Segmentation in the CAD system to improve its performance. When compared to existing techniques, the proposed segmentation technique has several advantages: spatial information is incorporated, there is no need to set any initial parameters beforehand, it is independent of magnification, it automatically determines the inputs for morphological operations to enhance segmented images so that pathologists can analyze the image with greater clarity, and it is fast. Extensive tests were conducted to determine the most effective feature extraction techniques and to investigate how textural, morphological, and graph characteristics impact the accuracy of categorization classification. In addition, a classification strategy for breast cancer detection has been developed that is based on weighted feature selection and uses an upgraded version of the Genetic Algorithm in conjunction with a Convolutional Neural Network Classifier. The practical application of the suggested improved segmentation and classification algorithms for the CAD framework may reduce the number of incorrect diagnoses and increase the accuracy of classification. So, it may serve as a second opinion tool for pathologists and aid in the early detection of diseases.
