Governments globally aim to boost productivity and enhance farmers’ livelihoods, addressing challenges like climate change, food security, and labor shortages through digital technologies. However, adoption rates in developing countries remain low due to uncertainties regarding expected returns and obstacles stemming from subjective and objective factors among farmers. This study takes China as a case study to examine the internal and external factors influencing growers’ adoption intensity of digital technology and its impact on enhancing economic benefits, aiming to provide valuable insights for the promotion of digital technology in other countries and regions. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative methodologies, utilizing data from Shandong and Liaoning provinces. The findings underscore the significant role of growers’ knowledge, technology compatibility, government support, and competitive pressure in driving the adoption of digital technology among growers, with male growers and those managing larger cultivation areas demonstrating higher adoption intensity. Digital technologies can enhance growers’ economic benefits by reducing labor and input costs, increasing yields, and improving quality, with a 30.4% increase in economic benefits for each unit increase in adoption intensity of digital technologies. Technology promoters can use these findings to enhance growers’ awareness, highlight the practical benefits, and offer agricultural socialized services to promote digital technology adoption.

Digital Technologies Adoption and Economic Benefits in Agriculture: A Mixed-Methods Approach

Purpose To meet environmental performance (EP) goals, this study aims to identify the complex interaction between green Industrial Internet of Things (GIIoT), circular economic practices (CEPs) and dynamic capabilities (DC). This study analyzes how technological, operational and cultural compatibilities enhance GIIoT adoption. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from diverse Chinese manufacturing firms ( n = 339) through a quantitative survey. The research model was proposed, and hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Moreover, the robustness of the structural model is further tested using Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis and importance performance map analysis. Findings The empirical results indicate that higher organizational compatibilities boost GIIoT adoption and EP. DC was assessed as a higher-order construct to examine its mediation of GIIoT adoption and EP. DC positively mediates GIIoT adoption-EP. Similarly, CEP’s positive impact on EP, partially mediating the relationship between GIIoT adoption and EP, has also been proved. Originality/value This research bridges current understanding and contributes useful insights for fostering environmental sustainability inside manufacturing firms and advances the theoretical understanding of technology adoption, sustainable development and dynamic capacity theory. It illuminates the way forward to harmonize and successfully integrate technology, CEP and EP. This research advances the area and gives decision-makers practical advice for creating sustainable and technologically sophisticated organizations. 

Unveiling environmental excellence: the confluence of green Industrial Internet of Things, circular economy practices and dynamic capabilities in manufacturing firms

Purpose Utilizing the expectation states theory in sociology, this study probes into the influence of the board's informal hierarchy on the quality of enterprise innovation, originating from the perspective of internal directorial interactions, while analyzing the boundary effects exhibited by the nature of property rights and the intensity of geo-culture. Design/methodology/approach The study selects China's A-share listed companies from 2008 to 2021 as the research sample, employing the Tobit regression analysis method to scrutinize the hypotheses presented in the text. Findings The regression results demonstrate a positive correlation between the board's informal hierarchy and the enterprise innovation quality (EIQ). Upon introducing variables specific to property rights and geographical culture, the authors found that in comparison to non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs), the influence of the board's informal hierarchy on the quality of corporate innovation is diminished in SOEs. Conversely, the intensity of geo-culture across Chinese provinces enhances their mutual positive influence. In the additional analysis, the authors also found that the elevation of corporate risk tolerance is a significant pathway for the positive effect of the board's informal hierarchy on EIQ. Moreover, this positive influence is more profound in high-tech enterprises, businesses implementing equity incentive plans and companies that have subscribed to director and officer liability insurance. Originality/value The findings not only deepen the understanding of how the board's internal status characteristics influence corporate decision-making but also enrich the application scope of expectation states theory. Furthermore, this study offers valuable guidance for optimizing innovation decision-making by adjusting the personnel structures of corporate boards. 

Board's informal hierarchy: influences on enterprise innovation quality


Purpose
This study aims to examine the influence of regulatory framework (RF), market dynamism (MDY), competitive intensity (CIN) and environmental public concern (EPC) on responsible innovation (RI) in the manufacturing SMEs of a developing country. Furthermore, the study examines the influence of RI on sustainable competitive advantage (SCA). Moreover, big data adoption (BDA) is used as a moderator between RI and SCA.


Design/methodology/approach
The study’s hypotheses are evaluated using the structural equation modeling methodology. The study collected data from a sample of 487 owners/managers of manufacturing SMEs using simple random sampling technique.


Findings
The results explain that RF, MDY, CIN and EPC significantly determine RI. Moreover, RI significantly determines SCA. Besides, BDA significantly moderates between RI and SCA.


Research limitations/implications
For manufacturing SMEs to obtain SCA, RI is essential, and BDA is crucial to meet changing consumer demands for environmentally friendly products. With more environment-friendly initiatives, the natural environment will become more sustainable. Moreover, this research offers a comprehensive perspective to the public regarding the extent to which manufacturing enterprises are adopting RI and BDA.


Originality/value
The majority of earlier research on RI and BDA has been carried out in the context of large businesses. Institutional theory was used to look into the drivers of RI. Furthermore, BDA is used as moderating variable between RI and SCA.


Institutional pressure and responsible innovation: how big data analytics adoption drives manufacturing SMEs toward competitiveness

The use of the Internet by older adults will contribute to the sustainable development of society. Existing studies have extensively investigated the influencing factors that affect older people’s use of the Internet, but ignored the behaviors of the people around them. Using data from China Family Panel Studies, we investigated the influence of peer effects on the Internet use of older people. It was found that, the stronger that peer effects are, the higher the level of Internet use among older adults. This conclusion still holds after a robustness test. The peer effects are more obvious in rural areas, due to closer community interaction. In addition, this study proves that peer effects promote Internet use by increasing the perceived importance of the Internet through mediation tests. The findings highlight the positive effects of social interaction on the Internet among older people, which is conducive to the improvement of policy practice.

Bridging the Digital Divide: Internet Use of Older People from the Perspective of Peer Effects

PurposeThe use of digital technology in firms has drawn attention of innovation management scholars and policy-makers, especially the imitation of digital technology and competition among peer firms. Drawing on dynamic competition theory, this paper examines how firms react to their peers' digital innovation behavior and the effect of external environment mechanisms on the magnitude of peer effects.Design/methodology/approachThis paper utilizes a text mining method to construct a baseline model with a Tobit estimator using data obtained for Chinese listed firms.FindingsThe findings suggest that peer effects on digital innovation behavior are robust and significant positive in China. Moreover, peer effects on digital innovation participation are positively magnified by firms' strong social network and high Fintech development. However, peer effects are relatively higher in non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs), low-profitability and high R&D firms.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors' findings contribute to the digital management literature by showing that firms need digital technological imitation and diffusion of innovations in the digital era.Practical implicationsManagers should provide insights into firms' imitation of their peers' acts to preserve competitive parity. Besides, firms should integrate employees within the organization and communicate digital innovation concepts and behaviors to external peer firms.Originality/valueFirst, this paper contributes to explaining how firms change their digital innovation strategy through the influence of peers' digital innovation behavior. Second, this paper fills the literature gaps related to the moderating effects of external environment factors in peer effects of digital innovation behavior.
