Robert Jay Lifton has devoted a lifetime to research and clinical work with individuals subjected to evolving historical trends, disasters, and sustained conditions of control and terror. Public space is partly what makes cities, and as such it has been at the core of urban studies and many disciplines ranging from sociology, geography, political science, anthropology to planning, architecture, design and philosophy. As one of the most multidisciplinary journals in the field, Urban Studies has been instrumental in exposing the controversies of public space during its 50 years of publication. A careful search through the archives of the journal, however, reveals that this interest has been rather uneven. While in the period before the 1990s a mere six articles dealt with aspects of public space, there has been a remarkable upsurge since then, which resulted in close to 300 articles. This paper considers the impact of urban South Africa's new spatial order on its already fragile social dynamics. Analysis considers the relationships between residents of a gated community and their neighbouring (non-gated) area, addressing both the attitudes and perceptions that exist amongst residents of each area towards the 'other' neighbourhood, as well as the nature of any direct contact between residents. The case study for this paper is located in a master plan private development, constructed in 1999 in the heart of Cape Town's wealthy (and predominantly White) 'southern suburbs'. The development hosts two vastly different residential areas that despite spatial proximity are socially and functionally isolated.

This chapter reviews the broad tendency within contemporary urban design to draw inspiration from natural systems. Described as “integral urbanism,” these practices draw inspiration from ecosystems, thresholds, ecotones, tentacles, rhizomes, webs, and more. Integral urbanism demonstrates functional, social, disciplinary and professional re-integration. In contrast to the modernist attempt to remove spatial boundaries or postmodernist fortification, integral urbanism generates permeable membranes and emphasizes movement through space as well as time via circulation systems and built-in flexibility. The resulting urban design pays attention to borders, edges, and networks. It values system diversity and is dynamic and self-adjusting through feedback mechanisms. Integral urbanism infuses the inherent wisdom of nature with contemporary sensibilities arising primarily from new technologies. This quiet revolution in the field of urban design figures within a larger reorientation in Western society that might be characterized as a shift from acceleration, accumulation, irony, and escapism towards slowness, simplicity, sincerity, and sustainability.

Good Urbanism: Six Steps to Creating Prosperous Places

This postoccupancy evaluation of participatory architecture undertaken by Belgian architect Lucien Kroll highlights discrepancies between intention and realization. A review of Kroll's published statements as well as interviews with him and with the inhabitants reveals that neither fully obtained their desired results. This article describes the aspirations of both architect and inhabitants for this small housing development in France and their respective disappointments with the fruits of their labors. It then suggests strategies for learning from this experiment to refine participatory practices in the future.
