Mining the Web: Discovering Knowledge from Hypertext Data

The Visual Notation for OWL Ontologies (VOWL) is a well-specified visual language for the user-oriented representation of ontologies. It defines graphical depictions for most elements of the Web Ontology Language (OWL) that are combined to a force-directed graph layout visualizing the ontology. In contrast to related work, VOWL aims for an intuitive and comprehensive representation that is also understandable to users less familiar with ontologies. This article presents VOWL in detail and describes its implementation in two different tools: ProtegeVOWL and WebVOWL. The first is a plugin for the ontology editor Protege, the second a standalone web application. Both tools demonstrate the applicability of VOWL by means of various ontologies. In addition, the results of three user studies that evaluate the comprehensibility and usability of VOWL are summarized. They are complemented by findings from an interview with experienced ontology users and from testing the visual scope and completeness of VOWL with a benchmark ontology. The evaluations helped to improve VOWL and confirm that it produces comparatively intuitive and comprehensible ontology visualizations.

In this paper, we survey the methods and concepts developed for the evaluation of dialogue systems. Evaluation, in and of itself, is a crucial part during the development process. Often, dialogue systems are evaluated by means of human evaluations and questionnaires. However, this tends to be very cost- and time-intensive. Thus, much work has been put into finding methods which allow a reduction in involvement of human labour. In this survey, we present the main concepts and methods. For this, we differentiate between the various classes of dialogue systems (task-oriented, conversational, and question-answering dialogue systems). We cover each class by introducing the main technologies developed for the dialogue systems and then present the evaluation methods regarding that class.

Computing Curricula 2020: Paradigms for Global Computing Education

This paper aims to propose solutions to the issue of ontology visualization, by presenting intuitive and user-friendly ontology editing and visualization environments mainly oriented to domain experts. It starts with an overview of existing ontology visualization methods; afterwards it describes the Semantic DB system and the OWLeasyViz ontology editor. Semantic DB is a web application framework to create simple complete semantic web applications, integrating an ontology editor, a resource editor, an inference rule editor, a reasoner, and a search engine. OWLeasyViz is an ontology editor that combines a textual and a graphical representation of OWL ontologies. It meets different user needs by providing a simple and intuitive interface to end-users who are not ontologists, and offering more advanced tools to ontology experts. The OWLeasyViz editor is intended to be a module of a semantic web integrated working environment, developed within the context of a Swiss Government funded CTI applied research project in the domain of waste water management.

User-Friendly Ontology Editing and Visualization Tools: The OWLeasyViz Approach

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of current developments in the area of electronic books and libraries, and to describe an on‐going research project. Following a discussion of the key terminology used in this field, a number of issues will be investigated: what an electronic library is; how this concept has evolved during the last twenty years; what an electronic book is; and the relationship between an electronic library and an electronic book. As a result of our research we have defined a new concept, the Virtual Electronic Library, and its basic components: the hyper‐book and the visual‐book. These are two forms of electronic books which are built from different sources: paper books and electronic texts respectively. The environments in which such electronic books are produced will also be described.

Hyper‐books and visual‐books in an electronic library

This paper describes a 3D environment for representing a university undergraduate education programme. More specifically, the curriculum data selected for representation, how they are visualized in the 3D environment, and the process of generating it are detailed. Modules and curricula have been rendered in such a way that many numerical data, such as credits and duration, are translated into a graphical form, resulting in a simple and intuitive overall view. This effective visualization strategy provides added-value in comparison with the more traditional textual presentation. The 3D environment, based on the X3D language, is dynamically generated from a database thanks to an XSLT transformation. The use of a powerful XML based Web publishing tool, i.e. Apache Cocoon, allows this transformation to be easily performed "on the fly".

The evaluation of electronic book guidelines from two practical experiences

This paper presents a general overview of the publishing process, including both paper and electronic publishing. The main actors (e.g. authors, publishers and libraries) and the associated publications channels are discussed. One channel is discussed in more detail: this channel incorpo rates all the steps involved from the acquisition of a manu script in a generic mark-up language to the presentation of the final electronic publication to the user in the library. The use of a generic mark-up language (e.g. SGML - stan dard generalised mark-up language) is viewed as being an essential component for facilitating the exchange of elec tronic documents between different systems and applica tions. In addition, the use of a generic mark-up language allows several steps of the publishing process to be auto mated, from the production of electronic books, to the addi tion of the resulting books to a (electronic) library.
