Abstract Improving and understanding the electrospinnability of native cellulose in room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) have been a hot issue in recent years. In this study, the electrospinning of cellulose in a highly efficient RTIL of 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIMCl) was investigated. The introduction of co-solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which significantly decreased the surface tension, viscosity and entanglement density of the network and increased the conductivity of the spinning dope, contributed to a continuous jet. The problems lying in nonvolatility and the high ionic strength of the RTIL, which unavoidably led to the standing up vertically, adhesion and contractions of the wet fibers during the electrospinning process, were successfully resolved using a rotating copper-wire drum as a collector and solidifying the jet under high relative humidity. The water vapor played an important role in leading to “skin formation” which helped to stabilize the fibrous morphology, and finally smooth ultra-thin regenerated cellulose fibers were obtained. The combination of solvent system and collecting apparatus and conditions provided not only an effective method of producing ultra-thin native cellulose fibers on a large scale, but also a fundamental solution to other electrospinning systems with high ionic strength and nonvolatility. Measurements on WAXD and FT-Raman indicated that the electrospun cellulose fibers were almost amorphous with a little crystallization presented the polymorph of Type-II, which was totally different from the native cellulose with the dominated polymorph of Type-I.

Electrospinning of native cellulose from nonvolatile solvent system

Electrospun polymer nanofibers (EPNF) constitute one of the most important nanomaterials with diverse applications. An overall review of EPNF is presented here, starting with an introduction to the most attractive features of these materials, which include the high aspect ratio and area to volume ratio as well as excellent processability through various production techniques. A review of these techniques is featured with a focus on electrospinning, which is the most widely used, with a detailed description and different types of the process. Polymers used in electrospinning are also reviewed with the solvent effect highlighted, followed by a discussion of the parameters of the electrospinning process. The mechanical properties of EPNF are discussed in detail with a focus on tests and techniques used for determining them, followed by a section for other properties including electrical, chemical, and optical properties. The final section is dedicated to the most important applications for EPNF, which constitute the driver for the relentless pursuit of their continuous development and improvement. These applications include biomedical application such as tissue engineering, wound healing and dressing, and drug delivery systems. In addition, sensors and biosensors applications, air filtration, defense applications, and energy devices are reviewed. A brief conclusion is presented at the end with the most important findings and directions for future research.

Electrospun Polymer Nanofibers: Processing, Properties, and Applications

Electrospinning is a technology that involves the application of electric power to spin polymers into fibers with a range of diameter widths measured in nanometers. The fiber mats so produced usually exhibit high porosity and large surface area-to-volume ratios that have the great advantage of enhancing the interaction with their surrounding media. Nanostructures produced from natural polymers by this process are able to encapsulate functional components and nutraceuticals due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability, and find use in a wide range of applications, such as new food ingredients, food additives, novel packaging materials, edible food coatings, and food sensors. Food packaging materials constructed from electrospun biobased polymers can be used to improve the shelf life of food products and to retain their sensory properties. Intelligent active packaging materials can be produced by this process by incorporating biosensors into the fibers to indicate the expiration date and food quality. Using novel nanotechnology methods, sensor devices can be coupled with the electrospun fibers as effective screening devices to detect bacteria and other microorganisms, and to distinguish antioxidants and other useful components. This chapter will review the latest developments in the manufacture of electrospun nanofibers for food applications using various electrospinning techniques.

Cellulose acetate solutions were electrospun from binary and ternary solvent systems, such as\nN,N-dimethylformamide, acetone and chloroform. The effects of the solvent systems on the structural, morphological\nand mechanical characteristics of the fibers were investigated.

Electrospinning is a technique that can be used to produce nanofibres from a polymeric solution or melt under the influence of a high electrostatic field [. In this paper, we used Acetone/N, N-Dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) and Acetic acid as the solvent, to explore the influencing factors of using electrospinning to prepare the nanofiber of cellulose acetate, and studied on how solvent, voltage and viscosity impact on the morphology and diameter of nanofiber. The results of the study show that: Acetone/DMAc as solvent, when the solvent ratio is 3:1, the spinning of the concentration is 4%～6%, the viscosity is 7.1～8.3 Poise, the voltage is 15kV, and deposition distance is 12cm, we could obtain the gelatin nanofibers with the diameter of 200-300 nanometer prepared by electrospinning. This study provided the theoretical basis for cellulose acetate prepared by electrospinning in antimicrobial food packaging materials development.
