The High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) is an ultralowemittance, kilometer-scale storage ring light source to be built in China. In this paper we will introduce the progress of the physical design and studies on HEPS over the past one year, covering issues of storage lattice design and optimization, booster design, injection design, collective effects, error study, insertion device effects, beam lifetime, etc.

Progress of Lattice Design and Physics Studies on the High Energy Photon Source

For the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), a green-field fourth-generation storage ring light source, the preliminary design report (PDR) was completed in 2018, when the accelerator physics design had been basically finished. During the subsequent hardware and engineering design of the HEPS storage ring based on the PDR design, a few problems and challenges emerged, calling for modifications of the lattice. In this paper, we will introduce the background and reasons for the modifications and present the linear optics and simulation results for the nonlinear performance of the modified lattice of the HEPS storage ring. The modified lattice satisfies the requirements from hardware and engineering design.

In this paper we will review the evolution of the HEPS lattice design over the past ten years, focusing mainly on the linear optics design and nonlinear optimization.

Evolution of the Lattice Design for the High Energy Photon Source

A superconducting 166.6 MHz quarter-wave β=1 cavity was recently proposed for the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), a 6 GeV kilometer-scale light source. Four 166.6 MHz cavities will be used for main acceleration in the newly planned on-axis beam injection scheme realized by a double-frequency RF system. The fundamental frequency, 166.6 MHz, was dictated by the fast injection kicker technology and the preference of using 499.8 MHz SC RF cavity as the third harmonic. Each 166.6 MHz cavity will be operated at 4.2 K providing 1.2 MV accelerating voltage and 150 kW of power to the electron beam. The input coupler will use single-window coaxial type graded up to 200 kW CW power. Each cavity will be equipped with a 200 kW solid-state amplifier and digital low-level RF system. This paper describes the 166.6 MHz RF system with a focus on the design and optimization of the RF cavity and its ancillaries, the LLRF system and the status of the solid-state amplifiers.

A 166.6 MHz Superconducting RF System for the HEPS Storage Ring

Abstract Purpose The physics design of the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) was finished after many times of iteration. Hereby, the typical equilibrium electron beam parameters corresponding to the proposed two baseline operation modes in the baseline design of HEPS are presented. Methods To compute the equilibrium parameters of the electron beam, the lattice parameters, RF parameters, and the parameters of the insertion devices (IDs) were determined first. Furthermore, it is more precise to use the full-current electron beam parameters in the estimations of the performance of the synchrotron light. Therefore, not only the single-particle dynamics but also the current-dependent collective effects need to be considered in the computations of the full-current, equilibrium parameters of the electron beam. Both analytic computations and multi-particle tracking simulations were carried out. Results The full-current, equilibrium parameters of the electron beams in the HEPS storage ring are presented in this paper. Moreover, the main beam parameters in the injector (the booster and the LINAC), corresponding to the two baseline operation modes of the storage ring, are also presented. Conclusion The typical electron beam parameters corresponding to the two baseline operation modes are given in detail in this paper.

Equilibrium electron beam parameters of the High Energy Photon Source

The High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) is a new designed photon source at beam energy of 6 GeV. Due to the small beam pipe aperture and a large number of insertion devices in the machine, the impedance can drive collective instabilities and limit the machine performance. Therefore, a thorough estimation of the coupling impedance is necessary in controlling the total impedance of the whole machine. A primary impedance model is obtained for the storage ring.
