The history and variability of the East Asian paleomonsoon climate

The origin of millet from Neolithic China has generally been accepted, but it remains unknown whether common millet (Panicum miliaceum) or foxtail millet (Setaria italica) was the first species domesticated. Nor do we know the timing of their domestication and their routes of dispersal. Here, we report the discovery of husk phytoliths and biomolecular components identifiable solely as common millet from newly excavated storage pits at the Neolithic Cishan site, China, dated to between ca. 10,300 and ca. 8,700 calibrated years before present (cal yr BP). After ca. 8,700 cal yr BP, the grain crops began to contain a small quantity of foxtail millet. Our research reveals that the common millet was the earliest dry farming crop in East Asia, which is probably attributed to its excellent resistance to drought.

Earliest domestication of common millet (Panicum miliaceum) in East Asia extended to 10,000 years ago.

Samples of dust from the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) ice core, Summit, Greenland, dated within marine isotope stage 2 (between 23,340 and 26,180 calendar years B.P.) around the time of the coldest, local, last glacial temperatures, have been analyzed to determine their provenance. To accomplish this, we have compared them with approximately Coeval aeolian sediments (mostly loesses) sampled in possible source areas (PSAs) from around the northern hemisphere. The <5-μm grain-size fraction of these samples was analyzed on the basis that it corresponds to the atmospheric dust component of that time and locale, which was sufficiently fine grained to be transported over long distances. On the basis of comparison of the clay mineralogy and Sr, Nd and Pb isotope composition with ice dust and PSAs and assuming that we have sampled the most important PSAs, we have determined that the probable source area of these GISP2 dusts was in eastern Asia. The dust was not derived from either the midcontinental United States or the Sahara, two more proximal areas that have been suggested as potential sources based on atmospheric circulation modeling. Except for a brief period during an interstadial, when dust transport was exceptionally low (for glacial times) and had a mineralogical composition indicative of a slightly more southern provenance, the source area of the dust did not change significantly during times of variably higher fluxes of dust with larger mean grain size or lower fluxes of dust with smaller mean grain size. This includes the high-dust period that correlates with the Heinrich 2 period of major iceberg discharge into the North Atlantic. Variable wind strengths must therefore be invoked to account for these abrupt and significant changes in dust flux and grain size.

Asian provenance of glacial dust (stage 2) in the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 Ice Core, Summit, Greenland

▪ Abstract This paper presents a general review of the recent research advances of the East Asian paleomonsoon, based mainly on studies of the loess-soil sequences in the Chinese Loess Plateau. In the last 2.6 million years, the paleomonsoonal history may be divided into about 166 events on a time scale of the Earth's orbital variations. During the last glacial period, millenial-scale oscillations of the monsoon system were prominent, which can be fairly well correlated with the Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles recognized in the Greenland ice cores. The monsoonal rainfall belt has experienced a wide, repeated advance-retreat change during the glacial-interglacial cycles of the Pleistocene. Both temporal and spatial changes of the monsoon system in the Quaternary could have been linked closely to global ice-volume variations.

Evolution and variability of the Asian monsoon system: state of the art and outstanding issues.

Three loess sections in the Loess Plateau of China have been studied to characterize the variations of the East Asian monsoon climate in the Late Quaternary period. Paleo-weathering profiles based on two weathering indices reveal a series of spatially correlative intervals of lower weathering intensity (LW), in the last glacial and late penultimate glacial loess, indicating significantly cooler or/and drier conditions. Most of them are identified at or near the transitional boundaries between loess and soil units, suggesting that climatic conditions favorable for LW events tended to occur at or near major climatic boundaries. Twenty-eight radiocarbon and thermoluminescence measurements, combined with Kukla's magnetic susceptibility age model date these events at ∼14, ∼21, ∼29, ∼38, ∼52, ∼71, ∼135, and ∼145 ka BP, with ∼5–10 ka frequency inlaid within the orbitally induced ∼20-ka periodicity. The ages of the first six events in the last glacial period are therefore close to those of the coarse-grained Heinrich layers in the North Atlantic Ocean, which resulted from massive discharges of icebergs. The results indicate that the climate in the area affected by the East Asian monsoon has experienced high-frequency changes more or less synchronous with the Heinrich events. These high-frequency changes have been reported by Porter and An, based on the grain-size time series from the Luochuan loess section. Our data also reveal that similar events also occurred during the penultimate glaciation. The mechanisms linking the Heinrich events and the East Asian monsoon climate may be similar to that driving the Younger Dryas event which has been identified in a large number of records in China and in the surrounding oceans.
