An automated approach for reconstructing recent forest disturbance history using dense Landsat time series stacks
TL;DR: In this article, a highly automated algorithm called vegetation change tracker (VCT) has been developed for reconstructing recent forest disturbance history using Landsat time series stacks (LTSS).

Cash for carbon: A randomized trial of payments for ecosystem services to reduce deforestation
Seema Jayachandran,Joost de Laat,Eric F. Lambin,Eric F. Lambin,Charlotte Stanton,Robin Audy,N. Thomas +6 more
TL;DR: Satellite-based observation of Ugandan forests documents the effectiveness of paying owners to not cut down their trees, and valued the delayed carbon dioxide emissions and found that this program benefit is 2.4 times as large as the program costs.

Automated masking of cloud and cloud shadow for forest change analysis using Landsat images
Chengquan Huang,N. Thomas,Samuel N. Goward,Jeffrey G. Masek,Zhiliang Zhu,John R. Townshend,James E. Vogelmann +6 more
TL;DR: This algorithm for automatically flagging clouds and their shadows in Landsat images is developed and concluded that this algorithm is especially suitable for forest change analysis, because the commission and omission errors of the derived masks are not likely to significantly bias change analysis results.

Dynamics of national forests assessed using the Landsat record: Case studies in eastern United States
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used time series stacks of Landsat images (LTSS) to evaluate the dynamics of seven national forests (NFs) in eastern United States, including the De Soto NF, the TalladegaNF, the Francis Marion NF, and the Uwharrie NF in southeastern US.

Development of time series stacks of Landsat images for reconstructing forest disturbance history
Chengquan Huang,Samuel N. Goward,Jeffrey G. Masek,Feng Gao,Eric Vermote,N. Thomas,Karen Schleeweis,Robert E. Kennedy,Zhiliang Zhu,Jeffery C. Eidenshink,John R. Townshend +10 more
TL;DR: This paper describes a streamlined approach for producing IRU quality Landsat time series stacks (LTSS), which consists of an image selection protocol, high level preprocessing algorithms and IRUquality verification procedures.
