In the present work, the optical properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) (1:1) polymeric blend have been tuned in situ using tin sulfide (SnS) semiconductor for optoelectronics. The solution casting technique was used to prepare plain PVA/PVP polymeric blend and different weight ratios percentages (x: 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0 and 10.0 wt%) of SnS filled PVA/PVP polymeric blend nanocomposite films. The prepared films were characterized using a scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, FT-IR spectroscopic technique and UV–visible–NIR spectrophotometer. The effect of SnS concentration on the optical parameters (optical energy gap, refractive index, optical conductivity, dielectric constants, dispersion energy and average oscillator strength) has been investigated. The ability to tune the optical parameters of the prepared SnS nanocomposite polymeric blend films makes them effective candidates in many applications especially optoelectronics and optical devices.

Insights into optical band gap identification in polymer composite films based on PVA with enhanced optical properties: Structural and optical characteristics

In this study, the role of iron sulfide (FeS) content on the structural and optical properties of graphene/polyvinyl alcohol (Gr/PVA) blend has been examined for environmental-friendly applications. Gr/PVA blend filled with FeS (0 to 10 wt%) were equipped using the casting technique. The prepared samples were studied via a scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, FT-IR and UV–visible-NIR spectrophotometers. XRD analysis shows that the crystallinity increases with increasing FeS concentration in the host Gr/PVA blend. UV–visible-NIR analysis shows that the direct optical bandgap of composite blends shrinks from 5.37 to 4.68 eV as FeS content is increased to 10 wt%. Also, it confirms that the refractive index and optical conductivity of Gr/PVA blend could be significantly enhanced via FeS filling. FeS filled Gr/PVA blends are recommended eco-friendly applications.

Exploring the structural and optical properties of FeS filled graphene/PVA blend for environmental-friendly applications

Polymer electrolyte films containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with various CdI2 inorganic salt contents are prepared using an ultrasonic wave and a casting method for studying the effect of cadmium iodide (CdI2) additions on the microstructure, optic and dielectric characteristics of the PVA film. Incorporating CdI2 inorganic salt affects the microstructural parameters of the proposed films. UV–Vis–NIR optical spectroscopy explores the influence of the inorganic CdI2 salt content on the optical characteristics. For 3.7 wt% CdI2 inorganic salt sample, each of the materials is a possible candidate for UV-shielding applications, the prepared polymeric electrolyte films begin a blocking light between 190 and 276 nm of UV–Vis light. The gap energy in the visible region attributes to a reduction in the size of the crystallite, with increasing CdI2 concentrations. The band gaps enhance the behavior of light absorption and the materials examined were suited for optical UV protection systems. The ionic conductivity of the polymer electrolyte films is studied as a function of the added CdI2 inorganic salt. The AC impedance in PVA polymeric electrolyte film behaviors also depends on the incorporation of CdI2 inorganic salt which improves their dielectric parameters. CdI2/PVA composite films showed a new trend in the electrical and optical behavior for many applications especially UVC light blocking.

Optical Analysis and UV-Blocking Filter of Cadmium Iodide-Doped Polyvinyl Alcohol Polymeric Composite Films: Synthesis and Dielectric Properties

Hybrid polymer films of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) embedded with gradient levels of Bi-powder were prepared using a conventional solution casting process. XRD, FTIR, and SEM techniques have been used to examine the micro/molecular structure and morphology of the synthesized flexible films. The intensities of the diffraction peaks and transmission spectrum of the PVP/PVA gradually declined with the introduction of Bi-metal. In addition, filler changes the microstructure surface of the pure film. The modification in the microstructure leads to an enhancement in the optical absorption characteristic of the blend films. The indirect allowed transition energy was calculated via Tauc’s and ASF (Absorption Spectra Fitting) models. The decrease in the hybrid film’s bandgap returns to the localized states in the forbidden region, which led the present films to be suitable for photo-electric, solar cell, etc., applications. The relation between the transition energy and the refractive index was studied. The enhancement in the refractive index with Bi-metal concentrations led to use the as-prepared films in optical sensors. The rise of Bi-metal concentrations leads also to the improvement of the nonlinear susceptibility and refractive parameters. The optical limiting characteristics revealed that the higher concentration dopant films reduce the light transmission intensity which is appropriate for laser attenuation and optical limiting in photonic devices. The results suggest that hybrid films are promising materials in a wide range of opto-electronic applications.
