The fast generalized discrete Fourier transforms: a unified approach to the discrete sinusoidal transforms computation

A realization for the discrete cosine and sine transforms (DCT and DST) is proposed which is based on an FFT (fast Fourier transform) optimized for DSP (digital signal processor) use. Besides its regular structure, even the theoretically interesting total number of required operations is about the same as needed by the most regular direct approach and only slightly higher than the minimum number yet published. Compared to a similar approach published recently by N. Ramamurthy and M.N.S. Swamy (1990), it is even more efficient. >

Discrete cosine transform (DCT) is the most widely used transformation technique in the field of signal processing particularly in the areas of image data. This paper addresses the design of parallel architectures for computing DCT using CORDIC. It concentrates on indirect methods, which avoids decomposition of direct DCT equation. In this paper, CORDIC methodology has been used to simplify the traditional indirect techniques for the computation of DCT. The proposed methodology is CORDIC friendly and maintains a regular structure, thereby reducing computational complexity. DCTs are used extensively in the area of digital processing for the purpose of pattern recognition. So the efficient computation of DCT maintaining a transparent design flow is highly solicited.

Complexity reduction, self/completely recursive, radix-2 DCT I/IV algorithms

An algorithm based on O/sup 2/DFT (odd-time odd-frequency discrete Fourier transform) is presented for the computation of the EDCT-2 of purely real sequences. Comparison of this algorithm with two others available in the literature shows that it is computationally superior for EDCT-2 evaluation of real sequences (N>8). Its computational advantage is based on its lesser real multiplication requirements. >
