This review describes the synthesis of 1,3- and 1,2-tetrachalcogenafulvalenes, the chemical transformation of substituents, reactions of the ring systems and the synthesis of polymers with 1,3-tetrathiafulvalene units in the backbone and in the side chain. For selected charge-transfer complexes of tetrachalcogenafulvalenes the relation between molecular structure and solid-state structure, respectively, and electric conductivity are discussed. Superconducting properties of some charge-transfer complexes with tetrachalcogenafulvalenes as donor are reported. Preparations of important starting compounds for the synthesis of tetrachalcogenafulvalenes (like 1,2- and 1,3-dithiole, 1,3-thiaselenole, and 1,3-diselenole derivatives) have been considered in this review. Selected properties (melting point, UV-VIS absorption data and oxidation potentials) of 1,2- and 1,3-tetrachalcogenafulvalenes are summarized in appropriate tables.

Synthesis, Reactions, and Selected Physico-Chemical Properties of 1,3-and 1,2-Tetrachalcogenafulvalenes

Amid the investigation of solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (SDSSCs), it was found that the incorporation of F4TCNQ into the solid hole-transporting materials (HTMs) spiro-MeOTAD forms a spiro-MeOTAD/F4TCNQ (strong electron acceptor) polaron charge-transfer complex. Careful examination indicates that the formation of the polaron charge-transfer complex not only facilitates the conductivity of HTMs but also inhibits the charge recombination across the interface of the heterojunction, i.e. photoanode/HTMs and/or counter electrode/HTMs. As a result, the performance of SDSSCs has been markedly improved by using the organic dye A2-F. At AM1.5 illumination the short circuit current densities JSC increase from 8.29 mA cm−2 (w/o F4TCNQ) to 10.95 mA (w/F4TCNQ), accompanied by a 20% increase of the overall power conversion efficiency, η, from 4.55% to 5.44%.

Examination of the structural and electronic trends among organic metals and organic superconductors, which are composed of complex salts of heterocyclic π-donors, has been greatly facilitated by the preparation and study of a number of new tellurium containing organic π-donors. These studies required that a number of new synthetic strategies be developed. A brief review of these methods leading up to and including the recent synthesis of tetratellurafulvalene (TTeF) is provided. The increase in electrical conductivity on going from S to Se to Te in the series (TXF-TCNQ) (where X[dbnd]S, Se, Te) is shown to be consistent with the square of the bandwidths or to an increase in intrachain interaction (σ∞WT 2). While TTeF-TCNQ has not been found to undergo a transition to a superconducting state as the temperature is lowered at ambient pressure neither does it undergo a metal to insulator transition as is observed for TTF-TCNQ (Tmax = 59K) or for TSF-TCNQ (Tmax = 40K). Organic Metals Containing Tellurium

The first synthesis of tetratelluradicyclopenta[b,g]naphthalene (TTeDCN), which is a six-membered ring isomer of hexamethylenetetratellurafulvalene (HMTTeF), is reported. TTeDCN is obtained as yellow microcrystals and gives green single crystals in which TTeDCN forms a complex with HMTTeF in 1:1 molecular ratio.

TETRATELLURADICYCLOPENTA[b,g]NAPHTHALENE (TTeDCN)

We present the synthesis and physical properties of tetratelluradicyclopenta[b,g]naphthalene (TTeDCN). TTeDCN is a yellow crystal and makes a 1:1 molecular complex with HMTTeF, which is a five-membered ring isomer of TTeDCN. The crystal structure of the complex was solved by an X-ray crystallography and specific short Te··Te contacts between TTeDCN and HMTTeF molecules were observed. The first oxidation potential of TTeDCN is 0.74 V (vs. Ag/Ag + ) and TTeDCN forms CT complexes with F 4 TCNQ and HCBD.
