Recently, great attention has been focused on hydrogen as a potential energy vector and on the use of water-splitting technology as a clean and renewable means to generate hydrogen using solar energy. Numerous attempts have been made to develop photo-catalysts that work not only under UV light but also under visible-light illumination to efficiently utilize solar energy. One of the most well-known photo-catalysts used in the past forty years is TiO 2 . Despite having excellent characteristics as a photo-catalyst, TiO 2 also has some limitations. This paper presents modification techniques that can be used to improve the drawbacks of TiO 2 , such as the addition of sacrificial agents into the solution. The role of sacrificial agents, such as methanol and several recent achievements by previous researchers have also been included.

Hydrogen from photo-catalytic water splitting process: A review

Vermicomposting is a process in which earthworms are used to convert organic materials into humus-like material known as vermicompost. A number of researchers throughout the world have found that the nutrient profile in vermicompost is generally higher than traditional compost. In fact, vermicompost can enhance soil fertility physically, chemically and biologically. Physically, vermicompost-treated soil has better aeration, porosity, bulk density and water retention. Chemical properties such as pH, electrical conductivity and organic matter content are also improved for better crop yield. Nevertheless, enhanced plant growth could not be satisfactorily explained by improvements in the nutrient content of the soil, which means that other plant growth-influencing materials are available in vermicomposts. Although vermicomposts have been shown to improve plant growth significantly, the application of vermicomposts at high concentrations could impede growth due to the high concentrations of soluble salts available in vermicomposts. Therefore, vermicomposts should be applied at moderate concentrations in order to obtain maximum plant yield. This review paper discusses in detail the effects of vermicompost on soil fertility physically, chemically and biologically. Future prospects and economy on the use of organic fertilizers in the agricultural sector are also examined.

Energy-nutrients-water nexus: integrated resource recovery in municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Urban water systems and, in particular, wastewater treatment facilities are among the major energy consumers at municipal level worldwide. Estimates indicate that on average these facilities alone may require about 1% to 3% of the total electric energy output of a country, representing a significant fraction of municipal energy bills. Specific power consumption of state-of-the-art facilities should range between 20 and 45 kWh per population-equivalent served, per year, even though older plants may have even higher demands. This figure does not include wastewater conveyance (pumping) and residues post-processing. On the other hand, wastewater and its byproducts contain energy in different forms: chemical, thermal and potential. Until very recently, the only form of energy recovery from most facilities consisted of anaerobic post-digestion of process residuals (waste sludge), by which chemical energy methane is obtained as biogas, in amounts generally sufficient to cover about half of plant requirements. Implementation of new technologies may allow more efficient strategies of energy savings and recovery from sewage treatment. Besides wastewater valorization by exploitation of its chemical and thermal energy contents, closure of the wastewater cycle by recovery of the energy content of process residuals could allow significant additional energy recovery and increased greenhouse emissions abatement.

Energy Issues in Sustainable Urban Wastewater Management: Use, Demand Reduction and Recovery in the Urban Water Cycle

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) consume high amounts of energy which is mostly purchased from the grid. During the past years, many ongoing measures have taken place to analyze the possible solutions for both reducing the energy consumption and increasing the renewable energy production in the plants. This review contains all possible aspects which may assist to move towards energy neutrality in WWTPs. The sources of energy in wastewater were introduced and different indicators to express the energy consumption were discussed with examples of the operating WWTPs worldwide. Furthermore, the pathways for energy consumption reductions were reviewed including the operational strategies and the novel technological upgrades of the wastewater treatment processes. Then the methods of recovering the potential energy hidden in wastewater were described along with application of renewable energies in WWTPs. The available assessment methods, which may help in analyzing and comparing WWTPs in terms of energy and greenhouse gas emissions were introduced. Eventually, successful case studies on energy self-sufficiency of WWTPs were listed and the innovative projects in this area were presented.

Achieving energy neutrality in wastewater treatment plants through energy savings and enhancing renewable energy production

In this study, environmental impacts of industrial waste disposal of used lubricating oils and sulphur wastes scenarios have been investigated and modeled. The life-cycle assessment methodology was selected among the environmental impact assessment methods. In this method environmental issues and burdens were quantitated in order to facilitate the comparison. In this regard, options with the least adverse impacts were suggested. Functional unit of the study has also been defined as amount of used lubricating oils and sulphur wastes in terms of kilograms based on capacity of transitional barrel. Accordingly, the system boundaries were selected for life cycle of the wastes produced in sulphur unit of Tehran Oil Refinery. Since the main disposal method applied in Tehran Oil Refinery was transference to the municipal landfill, two incineration and landfilling scenarios were modeled for used lubricating oils and sulphur wastes by means of Simapro-7.1 software. Then, the outputs of these scenarios were compared in terms of the least environmental impacts by EDIP 2003 and Ecoindicator 99 methods. Finally, incineration scenarios were recommended as the most efficient ones.
