Over the past half-century, Optimal Power Flow (OPF) has become one of the most important and widely studied nonlinear optimization problems. In general, OPF seeks to optimize the operation of electric power generation, transmission, and distribution networks subject to system constraints and control limits. Within this framework, however, there is an extremely wide variety of OPF formulations and solution methods. Moreover, the nature of OPF continues to evolve due to modern electricity markets and renewable resource integration. In this two-part survey, we survey both the classical and recent OPF literature in order to provide a sound context for the state of the art in OPF formulation and solution methods. The survey contributes a comprehensive discussion of specific optimization techniques that have been applied to OPF, with an emphasis on the advantages, disadvantages, and computational characteristics of each. Part I of the survey (this article) provides an introduction and surveys the deterministic optimization methods that have been applied to OPF. Part II of the survey examines the recent trend towards stochastic, or non-deterministic, search techniques and hybrid methods for OPF.

Optimal power flow: A bibliographic survey II non-deterministic and hybrid methods

A new hybrid particle swarm optimization (PSO) that incorporates a wavelet-theory-based mutation operation is proposed. It applies the wavelet theory to enhance the PSO in exploring the solution space more effectively for a better solution. A suite of benchmark test functions and three industrial applications (solving the load flow problems, modeling the development of fluid dispensing for electronic packaging, and designing a neural-network-based controller) are employed to evaluate the performance and the applicability of the proposed method. Experimental results empirically show that the proposed method significantly outperforms the existing methods in terms of convergence speed, solution quality, and solution stability.

Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization With Wavelet Mutation and Its Industrial Applications

The term smart grid refers to a modernization of the electrical network consisting in the integration of various technologies such as dispersed generation, dispatchable loads, communication systems and storage devices which operates in grid-connected and islanded modes. As a result, traditional optimization techniques in new power systems have been seriously influenced during the last decade. One of the most important technical and economical tools in this regard is the Optimal Power Flow (OPF). As a fundamental optimization tool in the operation and planning fields, OPF has an undeniable role in the power system. This paper reviews and compares the OPF approaches mainly related to smart distribution grids. In this work, the main OPF approaches are compared in terms of their objective functions, constraints, and methodologies. Furthermore, computational performances, case study networks and the publication date of these methods are reported. Finally, some basic challenges arising from the new OPF methodologies in smart grids are addressed.

Applications of computational intelligence techniques for solving the revived optimal power flow problem

A novel approach based on the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) technique is proposed for the transient-stability constrained optimal power flow (TSCOPF) problem. Optimal power flow (OPF) with transient-stability constraints considered is formulated as an extended OPF with additional rotor angle inequality constraints. For this nonlinear optimisation problem, the objective function is defined as minimising the total fuel cost of the system. The proposed PSO-based approach is demonstrated and compared with conventional OPF as well as a genetic algorithm based counterpart on the IEEE 30-bus system. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the PSO-based TSCOPF in handling multiple contingencies is illustrated using the New England 39-bus system. Test results show that the proposed approach is capable of obtaining higher quality solutions efficiently in the TSCOPF problem.
