A digital technique for high-speed visualization of vibration, called videokymography, was developed and applied to the vocal folds. The system uses a modified video camera able to work in two modes : high-speed (nearly 8000 images/s) and standard (50 images/s in CCIR norm). In the high-speed mode, the camera selects one active horizontal line (transverse to the glottis) from the whole laryngeal image. The successive line images are presented in real time o a commercial TV monitor, filling each video frame from top to bottom. The system makes it possible to observe left-right asymetries, open quotient, propagation of mucosal waves, movement of the upper and, in the closing phase, the lower margins of the vocal folds, etc... The technique is suitable for further processing and quantification of recorded vibration.

Purpose of Review—This paper provides a review of the latest advances in videostroboscopy, videokymography and high-speed videoendoscopy, and outlines the development of new laryngeal imaging modalities based on optical coherence tomography, laser depth-kymography, and magnetic resonance imaging, published in the past 2 years. Videostroboscopy and Videokymography: Image quality has improved and several image processing and measurement techniques have been published. High-speed videoendoscopy: Significant progress has been made through increased sensitivity and frame rates of the cameras, and the development of facilitative playbacks, phonovibrography and several image segmentation and measurement methods. Clinical evidence was presented through applications in phonosurgery, comparisons with videostroboscopy, normative data, and better understanding of voice production. Optical coherence tomography: Latest developments allow for the capture of dynamic high resolution cross-sectional images of the vibrating vocal fold mucosa during phonation. Depth-kymography: New laser technique allowing recording of the vertical movements of the vocal folds during phonation in calibrated spatial values.

Various techniques, such as videostroboscopy, videokymography, digital kymograpgy, or ultrasonography are available and are used in research and clinical practice. This paper reviews recent advances in imaging for laryngeal diagnostics.

High-speed digital imaging (HSDI) of the larynx provides important information on the vocal fold vibrations that are closely associated with voice condition. We present an active contour (snake)-based algorithm for the automatic delineation of the glottis within image sequences captured from an HSDI system. The algorithm has three steps: first, a rough segmentation is performed by global thresholding, and followed by the detection of an ellipse-shaped region that approximates the glottal geometry, secondly, parameters of the ellipse are estimated using the principal component analysis (PCA) method and thirdly, the snake-method is applied using the estimated ellipse as an initial contour. The performance of the proposed approach is demonstrated through the use of clinical samples of the HSDI recordings obtained from subjects having both normal and pathological voice conditions. Finally the proposed method is compared with existing snake-based methods in terms of efficiency and segmentation accuracy.
