espanolEsta investigacion pretende profundizar en los motivos de los estudiantes de la Universidad de Sevilla hacia la actividad fisica. Para ello se realizo un estudio transversal (muestra de 1.085 estudiantes: 569 mujeres; edad media de 21 anos, σ=3,05), con diseno muestral aleatorio y estratificado segun facultad y sexo al que se le aplico un cuestionario ad hoc donde se recogian todas las variables del estudio. Los datos obtenidos revelan que los principales motivos de practica estan relacionados con la mejora de la salud, la satisfaccion y la diversion. Se mantiene la tendencia motivacional por la que los hombres estan mas motivados por la diversion y la competicion, y las mujeres por la salud y la estetica. Los motivos aducidos para no haber practicado nunca o haber dejado de hacerlo son muy semejantes, y se centran en la disponibilidad temporal y el interes hacia la actividad fisica. EnglishThe present research was carried out to study in depth the exercise motives in students from Seville university. For this purpose, a transversal study (sample of 1085 students: 569 women; average age 21 years, σ = 3,05), with a randomized design and stratified by faculty and gender, was carried out by applying an ad hoc questionnaire that considered all study variables. The main motives for participation in physical activity are related to be in good health, satisfaction and enjoyment. Men feel more motivated by enjoyment and competition, whereas women mainly practice because of health and beauty aspects. The main motives to have not ever practiced physical activity or have given it up, are both related to time availability or lack of time, and interest in physical activity. portuguesEsta investigacao pretende estudar a fundo a motivacao pela atividade fisica dos estudantes da Universidade de Sevilha. Para isso realizou-se um estudo transversal (amostra de 1,085 estudantes: 569 mulheres; com idade media de 21 anos, σ =3,05), com um desenho de amostragem aleatoria e estratificada segundo a faculdade e o sexo e ao qual se realizou um questionario ad hoc onde foram consideradas todas as variaveis em estudo. Os dados obtidos revelam que os principais motivos para a pratica de exercicio fisico estao relacionados com a melhoria da saude, a satisfacao e a diversao. Os homens sentem-se mais motivados pela diversao e pela competicao e as mulheres pela saude e pela estetica. Os principais motivos para nunca ter praticado ou por ter desistido de praticar exercicio fisico sao muito semelhantes, e estao ambos relacionados com a falta de tempo e com o interesse pela atividade fisica.

Constructing a psycho-social model for team cohesion at a financial institution

Conflict is an inevitable part of life and the importance of understanding and managing it is cardinal. The lack of understanding of conflict can affect various areas within an organisation, creating unstable and sometimes very vulnerable situations. Given the fact that conflict is perceived to be an inevitable occurrence in any organisation, it is logical to focus on the effective management thereof. Hence, the purpose of the study was to investigate conflict management from the viewpoint of municipal sports officers. Following a comprehensive literature study on conflict management, a qualitative research approach was adopted to collect data. Seven in-depth interviews were conducted with municipal sports officers at selected municipalities in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Content analysis was used to analyse the data. Emerging from the in-depth interviews were the following themes: negative consequences of conflict, benefits of effective management of conflict, training and support, sources of conflict and conflict management strategies. It was recommended that training in conflict management should be provided for all levels of employees on a regular basis so that they develop the necessary knowledge to solve different conflict situations. There should also be clear conflict resolution procedures to address conflict situations which employees should be aware of.

Managing conflict at work : a qualitative analysis of municipal sports officers' views in Gauteng province, South Africa

The purpose of this study was to determine Generation Y students' level of physical activity and the motivation for participating in physical activity. Despite there being a great deal of published literature that provides evidence of the benefits of engaging in physical activity and its influence on reducing certain dreaded illnesses, physical activity amongst the Generation Y cohort (individuals born between 1986 and 2005) is declining worldwide. In South Africa, the Generation Y cohort constituted 38 percent of the country's population in 2013. Given the significant size of this cohort, their physical and mental wellbeing has important economic implications, not only for the country's health care system but also its current and future labour market. Given that participation in physical activity has proven health benefits, it is imperative that members of the significantly sized South Africa's Generation Y cohort be encouraged to engage in physical activity. However, designing social marketing campaigns to arouse members of this cohort's motives to engage in physical activity necessitates first understanding their motivation to participate in physical activity. The study, using a questionnaire designed to measure Generation Y students' motives for participating in physical activity, was carried out on a convenience sample of 450 students across three South African public higher education institutions' campuses located in the Gauteng province. Data analysis was conducted using one-tailed one-sample t-tests and Pearson's product-moment correlation analysis. The findings suggest that Generation Y students engage in light, moderate and vigorous levels of exercise and are highly motivated to engage in physical exercise.
