A formula for the Hall response of interacting multi-band systems with arbitrary band topology and spin-orbit coupling is derived. The formula is valid at finite frequency, which is relevant for Faraday rotation, and it takes into account all particle-hole vertex corrections. The formula includes both three-leg (triangular) and four-leg (rectangular) diagrams. The latter diagrams are absent in the single band case. We show that the rectangular diagrams are necessary to recover the semiclassical formula for the Hall effect from the Kubo formula in the DC limit. They also give the linear response of the anomalous Hall effect to an external magnetic field, an effect which goes beyond the semiclassical theory. Three- and four-particle scatterings are neglected.

Hall and Faraday effects in interacting multiband systems

The physics of doping a Mott insulator is investigated in the presence of a solid-vacuum interface. Using the embedding approach for dynamical mean field theory we show that the change in surface spectral evolution in a doped Mott insulator is driven by a combination of charge transfer effects and enhanced correlation effects. Approaching a Mott insulating phase from the metallic side, we show that a dead layer forms at the surface of the solid, where quasiparticle amplitudes are exponentially suppressed. Surface correlation and charge transfer effects can be strongly impacted by changes of the hopping integrals at the surface.

Surface effects in doping a Mott insulator

A theoretical understanding of the enigmatic linear-in-temperature ($T$) resistivity, ubiquitous in strongly correlated metallic systems, has been a long sought-after goal. Furthermore, the slope of this robust $T$-linear resistivity is also observed to stay constant through crossovers between different temperature regimes: a phenomenon we dub \"slope invariance\". Recently, several solvable models with $T$-linear resistivity have been proposed, putting us in an opportune moment to compare their inner workings in various explicit calculations. We consider two strongly correlated models with local self-energies that demonstrate $T$-linearity: a lattice of coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models and the Hubbard model in single-site dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We find that the two models achieve $T$-linearity through distinct mechanisms at intermediate temperatures. However, we also find that these mechanisms converge to an identical form at high temperatures. Surprisingly, both models exhibit \"slope invariance\" across the two temperature regimes. We thus not only reveal some of the diversity in the theoretical inner workings that can lead to $T$-linear resistivity, but we also establish that different mechanisms can result in \"slope invarance\".

T-linear resistivity in models with local self-energy

We study a class of multi-orbital models based on those proposed by Venderbos, Hu, and Kane which exhibit an interplay of topology, interactions, and fermion incoherence. In the non-interacting limit, these models exhibit trivial and Chern insulator phases with Chern number $C \geq 1$ bands as determined by the relative angular momentum of the participating orbitals. These quantum anomalous Hall insulator phases are separated by topological transitions protected by crystalline rotation symmetry, featuring Dirac or quadratic band-touching points. Here we study the impact of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) type interactions on these lattice models. Given the random interactions, these models display `average symmetries' upon disorder averaging, including a charge conjugation symmetry, so they behave as interacting models in topological class $\mathbf{D}$ enriched by crystalline rotation symmetry. The phase diagram of this model features a non-Fermi liquid at high temperature and an `exciton condensate' with nematic transport at low temperature. We present results from the free-energy, spectral functions, and the anomalous Hall resistivity as a function of temperature and tuning parameters. Our results are broadly relevant to correlated topological matter in multiorbital systems, and may also be viewed, with a suitable particle hole transformation, as an exploration of strong interaction effects on mean-field topological superconductors.

Nematic order in topological Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Recent discovery of both gapped and gapless topological phases in weakly correlated electron systems has introduced various relativistic particles and a number of exotic phenomena in condensed matter physics. The Weyl fermion is a prominent example of three dimensional (3D), gapless topological excitation, which has been experimentally identified in inversion symmetry breaking semimetals. However, their realization in spontaneously time reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking magnetically ordered states of correlated materials has so far remained hypothetical. Here, we report a set of experimental evidence for elusive magnetic Weyl fermions in Mn$_3$Sn, a non-collinear antiferromagnet that exhibits a large anomalous Hall effect even at room temperature. Detailed comparison between our angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals significant bandwidth renormalization and damping effects due to the strong correlation among Mn 3$d$ electrons. Moreover, our transport measurements have unveiled strong evidence for the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions, namely, the emergence of positive magnetoconductance only in the presence of parallel electric and magnetic fields. The magnetic Weyl fermions of Mn$_3$Sn have a significant technological potential, since a weak field ($\sim$ 10 mT) is adequate for controlling the distribution of Weyl points and the large fictitious field ($\sim$ a few 100 T) in the momentum space. Our discovery thus lays the foundation for a new field of science and technology involving the magnetic Weyl excitations of strongly correlated electron systems.

Evidence for Magnetic Weyl Fermions in a Correlated Metal

Negative magnetoresistance is one of the manifestations of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals. The magneto-optical conductivity also shows transitions between Landau levels that are not spaced as in an ordinary electron gas. How are such topological properties modified by interactions and temperature? We answer this question by studying a lattice model of Weyl semimetals with an onsite Hubbard interaction. Such an interacting Weyl semimetal, dubbed as Weyl liquid, may be realized in ${\mathrm{Mn}}_{3}\mathrm{Sn}$. We solve that model with single-site dynamical mean-field theory. We find that in a Weyl liquid, quasiparticles can be characterized by a quasiparticle spectral weight $Z$, although their lifetime increases much more rapidly as frequency approaches zero than in an ordinary Fermi liquid. The negative magnetoresistance still exists, even though the slope of the linear dependence of the dc conductivity with respect to the magnetic field is decreased by the interaction. At elevated temperatures, a Weyl liquid crosses over to bad-metallic behavior where the Drude peak becomes flat and featureless. We comment on the effect of a Zeeman term.
