A review of geospatial technology-based applications in mineral exploration

This investigation seeks to analyse the territorial transformations, land uses, and land tenures in the region of Compostela, Nueva Galicia during the seventeenth century, using land grants for sites of cattle and sheep husbandry and farmland granted as the rural properties to the Davalos-Bracamontes family, who in 1690 obtained the title of the Counts of Miravalle. The novohispanas haciendas served as territorial control mechanisms of the use and incorporation of new forms of exploitation of the area’s natural resources. The methodology is based on the analysis of the archival data, historical cartography, supplemented by information collected in fieldwork and use of historical modality of geographic information systems. The haciendas of La Lagunilla, Miravalle and San Jose were located and together represented 33,736.60 ha of land for livestock and agriculture. The territorial extension was possible due to the disappearance of villages, parse indigenous populations in the surroundings and commitments made by the Spanish Crown to the Davalos-Bracamontes family.

We describe the creation of a data resource for charting the adoption of fixed line telephony in Great Britain over the period 1880–1984, of which the period 1880–1951 is available for wide research use. We first evaluate the use of various open-source software and then develop the novel teldiR open-source package to capture digitally encoded scans of all available telephone direc-tories at ten-yearly intervals throughout this period and document the quality control checks used to establish the provenance of the resulting digital records. Our research demonstrates the feasibility of digitally encoding scans of historical telephone directories, and suggests potential analytical extensions to this work, including georeferencing of subscriber records. This research is seen not only as facilitating geographical analysis of the adoption of fixed line telephony, but also as creating a bridge between historical analysis of residential mobility, migration, and changing geodemographic structure in the years between (now digitized) historical censuses and present day digital sources. The digital resource arising from this research is available for bona fide research use.

A century of telephony: digital capture of British telephone directories, 1880-1984

History and geography have a close relationship. Historical research cannot is not complete without geography, especially historical geography, which studies past geographic matters and phenomena as well as the laws of geographic development and evolution. Thanks to the rapid development and wide application of geographic information systems (GIS), GIS has attracted the attention of researchers in the field of historical studies, especially historical geography. A series of eye-catching accomplishments has been achieved in this field. However, although the concept of historical GIS has been known for many years, there have been no great breakthroughs in some of the related fundamental theories and key techniques, and the general methodology and software platform for historical GIS have not yet taken shape. With a focus on these problems, this thesis, following the sequence of methods and functions of GIS applied in historical studies, especially historical geographic studies, analyzes the literature from the following perspectives: visualization, organization, management, and spatial analysis of historical geographic data. Furthermore, this thesis introduces the major accomplishments of GIS applications in historical geography and in other historical studies and discusses the functions and influence of GIS in current historical studies as well as the problems and development trends of the current research; the goals of this study are to promote the profound integration and innovative development between GIS and historical studies and to lead historical GIS research to deeper development.
