This paper reviews all the known cases of invasive fruit flies that have originated from Africa and established in other parts of the world, as well as exotic invasive tephritid species that have been introduced accidently into Africa from their natives ranges elsewhere. The former concerns the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi); the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann); and the Ethiopian fruit fly, Dacus ciliatus Loew. For the latter category, we include the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel); the solanum fruit fly, Bactrocera latifrons (Hendel); the peach fruit fly, Bactrocera zonata (Saunders) and the melon fruit fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett). For each of them we discuss their taxonomic position, their distribution and invasion history, their economic impact and their importance (real and/or potential) in the horticultural industry.

Exotic Invasive Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae): In and Out of Africa

The Solanum fruit fly, Bactrocera latifrons (Hendel) is one of four invasive true fruit flies in Hawaii and primarily attacks peppers, tomatoes and other Solanaceae. The University of Hawaii Insect Museum collections hold a greater variation of forms than was described in the literature, which has likely led to some confusion regarding identification and may reflect greater morphological diversity across the range of the species. The abdomen of B. latifrons was initially described as orange-brown without dark markings and the femora were described as all fulvous. We found varying degrees of dark markings on the abdomen and legs in Hawaiian specimens. This variation is figured and we provide a differential diagnosis based on these new findings. We additionally discuss the consequences for diagnostics of this pest, and the possible synonymy with the Taiwanese endemic B. parvula (Hendel) and Indonesian B. pectoralis (Walker).

Unusual Dark Forms of the Solanum Fruit Fly Bactrocera latifrons (Hendel) in Hawaii (Tephritidae: Dacini)

India is endowed with a remarkably heterogeneous area characterized by a great diversity of agro climatic zones, allowing for production of a variety of horticultural crops such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, plantation crops, root and tuber crops, and medicinal and aromatic crops. Horticulture accounts for 30% of India’s agricultural GDP. Several factors constrain fruit production such as fruit flies which cause direct damage to fruits and vegetables which can lead upto 90-100% yield loss depending on fruit fly population, locality, variety and season (Mohamed, 2003). Fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) rank among the world's most serious pests of horticultural crops including fruits and vegetables. Out of 4,400 species of fruit flies distributed throughout the world, 250 species are of economic importance and are distributed widely in temperate and sub-tropical regions of the world, but the greatest diversity of species occurs in the tropical regions. More than 200 species of fruit flies have been reported from India (Kapoor, 1993). Among which important species reported from Kerala are B. dorsalis (Hendel), B. cucurbitae (Coquillett), B. tau (Walker), B. verbascifoliae (Drew & Hancock), B. caryae (Kapoor), B. zonata (Saunders), B. caudata (Fabricius), B. nigrotibialis (Drew) (David et al., 2008; Jiji et al., 2010). Here we record the presence of another species of the genus Bactrocera from Kerala; the Solanum fruit fly, Bactrocera latifrons (Hendel).
