Consequently, the presence of a ~3K microwave background signal at L2 can be established, if the ~4K reference targets function as intended. Conversely, demonstration that the targets are unable to provide the desired emission implies that the ~3K signal cannot exist, at this location. Careful study reveals that only the second scenario can be valid. This analysis thereby provides firm evidence that the monopole of the microwave background, as initially detected by Penzias and Wilson, is being produced by the Earth itself.

The Planck Satellite LFI and the Microwave Background: Importance of the 4 K Reference Targets

In this work, the nature of the microwave background is discussed. It is advanced that the 2.725 K monopole signal, first detected by Penzias and Wilson, originates from the Earth and therefore cannot be detected at the Lagrange 2 point (L2). Results obtained by the COBE, Relikt-1, and WMAP satellites are briefly reviewed. Attention is also placed on the upcoming PLANCK mission, with particular emphasis on the low frequency instrument (LFI). Since the LFI on PLANCK can operate both in absolute mode and in di erence mode, this instrument should be able to unequivocally resolve any question relative to the origin of the 2.725 K monopole signal. The monopole will be discovered to originate from the Earth and not from the Cosmos. This will have implications relative to the overall performance of the PLANCK satellite, in particular, and for the future of astrophysics, in general.

On the Nature of the Microwave Background at the Lagrange 2 Point. Part I

Planck's Low Frequency Instrument is an array of 22 pseudo-correlation radiometers at 30, 44, and 70 GHz. Before integrating the overall array assembly, a first set of tests has been performed for each radiometer chain assembly (RCA), consisting of two radiometers. In this paper, we describe Rachel, a software application which has been purposely developed and used during the RCA test campaign to carry out both near-realtime on-line data analysis and data storage (in FITS format) of the raw output from the radiometric chains.

In this work, system level modelling and realistic simulation and measurement results of a 31 GHz Back-End Module (BEM) Low-Noise Amplifier (LNA), designed for the QUIJOTE CMB (Q U I JOint TEnerife CMB) experiment radiometer, are reported. The signals received by radiometers can be identified as continuous spectre gaussian white noise signals. This makes necessary time-domain simulation techniques and appropriate models for the realistic analysis of radiometers behaviour. The measured-based modelling of one BEM ́s LNA, its simulation in nominal conditions and the measurement of the nonlinear characteristic by using filtered white noise excitation signals, will be shown. Typically, in the LNAs design process the linearity is not taken into account but, as we will see, in the radiometers case, the nature of gaussian noise excitation signals makes amplifiers to present higher nonlinearity in their characteristics than when using single tone excitation signals. Therefore, in order to analyze the suitability of the LNAs nominal operation, linearity figures of merit have to be obtained, but using realistic excitation signals. In this paper, the LNAs nonlinear characteristics with gaussian noise excitation signals have been obtained by simulation and measurement. I. INTRODUCCIÓN Este trabajo presenta el modelado a nivel de sistema, la simulación y la medida de la compresión de un amplificador de bajo ruido (Low Noise Amplifier LNA) que forma parte del módulo posterior (Back-End Module – BEM) de un radiómetro. Dicho radiómetro ha sido diseñado para el experimento QUIJOTE CMB [1] y va a ser montado en tres antenas que se van a instalar en el observatorio del Teide (Tenerife). El experimento pretende medir la polarización del Fondo Cósmico de Microondas (Cosmic Microwave Background – CMB), para complementar y corregir las medidas obtenidas por el satélite PLANCK [2-3]. La primera antena tiene cinco receptores en su plano focal: dos en la banda de 10 GHz -14 GHz, dos en la de 14 GHz 20 GHz y uno entre 26 GHz y 36 GHz. El prototipo del BEM para esta última banda de frecuencia se ha diseñado en el Dpto. de Ingeniería de Comunicaciones de la UC (DICOM) y es el que utiliza el LNA que ilustra el presente trabajo. Debido a la complejidad y el coste computacional del modelado y la simulación de los receptores radiométricos, en la práctica esta tarea suele ser simplificada, utilizando modelos ideales y pruebas de un solo tono, dando lugar, en general, a resultados poco concluyentes. Sin embargo la simulación de este tipo de receptores y sus subsistemas podría evitar muchos ciclos de diseño y fabricación, usando modelos precisos y reducidos que den lugar a resultados realistas con un coste computacional razonable en términos de tiempo de simulación y consumo de recursos. En este trabajo proponemos el uso de técnicas de reducción del orden de modelos, presentadas y utilizadas en trabajos previos [4] para el modelado y simulación de subsistemas transmisores y receptores de comunicaciones móviles. Estas técnicas resultan especialmente útiles en el marco de los receptores radiométricos, porque los modelos resultantes posibilitan la simulación en el dominio del tiempo, algo esencial cuando la señal de excitación del receptor es ruido blanco Gaussiano, de espectro continuo. Por otro lado, los modelos obtenidos pueden ser complementados y mejorados aplicando técnicas para la incorporación de efectos degradantes del funcionamiento de un radiómetro, como la modulación de ganancia o el ruido 1/f [5]. De esta forma es posible obtener las figuras de merito del receptor en condiciones realistas y determinar si el comportamiento del BEM y sus subsistemas es el adecuado y cumple las especificaciones que se requieren, en particular, en el experimento QUIJOTE. El resto del artículo se organiza como sigue: En la Sección II se presenta la estructura del BEM y el modelado del LNA que ilustra el presente trabajo. La Sección III se dedica a la simulación del LNA en condiciones nominales de operación. En la Sección IV, se obtienen las características no lineales del LNA en condiciones realistas, tanto en simulación como en medida y se comparan con las características típicas de un solo tono. Finalmente, en la sección V se citan algunas conclusiones. II. MODELADO DEL LNA La Figura 1 muestra un esquema simplificado del BEM del experimento QUIJOTE. Esta estructura es un prototipo por lo que la estructura final podría variar algo, aunque básicamente la estructura se mantendría. La banda de frecuencia de funcionamiento va de 26 a 36 GHz. Se conectan en serie dos LNAs monolíticos comerciales, debido a requerimientos de ganancia. Fig. 1. Estructura simplificada del BEM del experimento QUIJOTE En particular, el AMMC-6241 de Avago Technologies se sitúa a la entrada del BEM, seguido de un segundo LNA, el ALH-140 de NGST. Este artículo se centra en el primer LNA para ilustrar el trabajo. Por otro lado, el filtro y el detector a diodo han sido diseñados y fabricados en tecnología híbrida en el DICOM. A. Modelado del AMMC-6241 Se ha utilizado un modelo caja-negra tipo Wiener para el LNA [6]. Este modelo consiste en la conexión en serie de un circuito eléctrico equivalente simplificado, que reproduce la memoria pequeña señal del amplificador, con una nolinealidad sin memoria, que reproduce la característica no lineal AM-AM con un solo tono a la frecuencia central de trabajo del amplificador (31 GHz). Este bloque no lineal sin memora se implementa mediante elementos específicos de la librería del simulador ADS de Agilent Technologies, logrando reproducir la característica no lineal obtenida mediante la medida del LNA. El comportamiento en pequeña señal de este bloque debe cumplir perfecta adaptación (Sii = 0) y perfecta y bilateral transmisión (Sij = 1), independientemente de la frecuencia. De esta forma las condiciones de adaptación vendrán determinadas por el filtro que caracteriza la dinámica lineal, afectada, a su vez, por la característica no lineal AM-AM. El modelo completo, al contrario que los basados puramente en parámetros [S] del circuito, no presenta problemas de convergencia en el dominio del tiempo, permitiendo la simulación no lineal de forma precisa. El filtro lineal se obtiene mediante la aplicación de la técnica de modelado de sistemas lineales presentada en [3], obteniendo un filtro equivalente con la misma respuesta en frecuencia que la obtenida mediante medida de los parámetros [S] del LNA. En la Figura 2, se comparan los parámetros [S] medidos con un analizador de redes (trazo rojo) con los del modelo (trazo azul). Se pueden apreciar algunas discrepancias, pero teniendo en cuenta el gran ancho de banda a caracterizar y el ruido presente en los datos de la medida, se ha considerado una aproximación lo suficientemente buena. En cuanto a la característica no lineal, tal como se ha comentado anteriormente, ha sido obtenida mediante medida del LNA y se ha implementado en el simulador mediante un elemento específico de la librería. III. SIMULACIÓN DEL LNA En esta sección, se muestran los resultados de la simulación realista del AMMC-6241 en condiciones nominales. El amplificador es excitado con una señal de ruido blanco Gaussiano y previamente filtrado en banda para emular el paso de la señal procedente del cielo por el módulo frontal del radiómetro. La Figura 3 muestra esta señal de entrada. La parte superior de la figura muestra la señal en el dominio del tiempo y la inferior la correspondiente representación en el dominio de la frecuencia. Modelado, simulación y medida de la compresión en LNAs para aplicaciones de astronomía

The ESA Planck satellite is designed to achieve precision imaging of the Cosmic Microwave Background with an unprecedented combination of angular resolution, sensitivity, spectral range and sky coverage. The Low Frequency Instrument is one of two complementary instruments, and covers 30, 44, and 70 GHz with an array of wideband pseudo-correlation, cryogenic radiometers. Advanced qualification models of the radiometer chains and of the instrument electronics have been manufactured, tested and integrated into the LFI Qualification Model. The main radiometer calibration, RF tuning and performance characterization is carried out at a single radiometer chain level, and then verified at instrument integrated level in dedicated cryofacilities. Here we describe the main requirements and instrument design, and we summarize the radiometer calibration strategy optimised during the qualification activity in view of the LFI Flight Model campaign.
