A brief review of the history of luminescence and display materials is given in conjunction with a summary of the activities of the Luminescence and Display Materials Division in the luminescence field over the first 100 years of the Society together with a compendium of luminescence related papers published in the Journal on luminescence.

Developments in Luminescence and Display Materials Over the Last 100 Years as Reflected in Electrochemical Society Publications

We report a novel full-color display based on the generation of full-color by a highly efficient blue QD-LED light approach, or so called color-by-blue QD-LED display This newly proposed color-by-blue QD-LED display combines a blue CdZnS/ZnS QD-LED blue subpixel and excitation source with front-emitting green/red phosphor subpixels It is carefully estimated that the detailed display characteristics as well as full color-conversion and reasonable device efficiency of blue, green, and red satisfy the minimum requirements for display application Also, we would like to emphasize that the proposed blue, green, and red device shows maximum luminance of 1570, 12920, and 3120 cd/m², respectively, luminous efficiency of 15, 121, and 25 cd/A, respectively, and external quantum efficiency of 68, 28, and 20%, respectively It is expected that full color generation by color-by-blue QD-LED will lead to further technological advancements in the area of efficient and facile display applications

We demonstrated the tri-functional device based on all powder-processing methods by using ZnS powder as phosphor layer and piezoelectric material as dielectric layer. The fabricated device generated the electroluminescent (EL) light from phosphor and the sound from piezoelectric sheet under a supply of external electric power, and additionally harvested the reverse-piezoelectric energy to be converted into EL light. Under sinusoidal applied voltage, EL luminances were exponentially increased with a maximum luminous efficiency of 1.3 lm/W at 40 V and 1,000 Hz, and sound pressure levels (SPLs) were linearly increased. The EL luminances were linearly dependent on applied frequency while the SPLs showed the parabolic increase behavior below 1,000 Hz and then the flat response. The temperature dependence on EL luminances and SPLs was demonstrated; the former was drastically increased and the latter was slightly decreased with the increase of temperature. Finally, as an energy harvesting application, the piezoelectric-induced electroluminescence effect was demonstrated by applying only mechanical pressure to the device without any external electric power.

© The Author(s) 2017. Published by ECS. Zn1-xCdx:Cu0.03%,Cl (where x = 0.5-0.9) infrared emitting phosphors have been synthesized by an aqueous thermal decomposition method. The aim was to developing infrared emitting phosphors for coding, marking, and identification applications. The phosphors were characterized by, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The emission band at 1000 nm was sufficiently far into the infrared region that visible emission was minimized. Co-doping Zn1-xCdxS:Cu0.03% with Al3+ increased the infrared emission intensity to over twice that of the equivalent Zn0.3Cd0.7S:Cu0.03% phosphor (with no Al3+ ion co-doping), with the highest intensity being found for the phosphor composition Zn0.1Cd0.9S:Cu0.03%, Al0.03%. It is shown herein that the inclusion of Al3+ into the phosphors causes the formation of cells with smaller cell volume, and it is suggested that this is the prerequisite for the improved photoluminescent properties. Finally we have shown herein that these infrared emitting powder phosphors are thus able to meet marking and coding requirements, especially in low light and poor visibility.

Structure and Luminescence Properties of the ZnS:Cu, Al Phosphor for Low Voltage Excitation.

The ZnS:Cu, Al phosphor has been studied for low voltage excitation field emission devices. To improve the cathodoluminescence (CL) brightness, the phosphor has been synthesized with iodide-type alkaline and alkali-earth metal as fluxes. Cul and AlF 3 were used as an activator and coactivator, respectively. The phosphor has been characterized in comparison with commercially available cathode ray tubes (CRTs) phosphor and conventionally prepared ones Newly synthesized ZnS:Cu. Al phosphor prepared with iodide-type fluxes has shown higher CL brightness than commercially available phosphor and conventionally prepared ones. The phosphor structure has been analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. From the analysis, the phosphor particles were composed of cubic and hexagonal phases. The cubic phase was much more formed when iodide-type fluxes were used. This cubic phase helps the phosphor to have high brightness at low voltage operations.
