A five-decade systematic review of research progress on production and management of small ruminants in bangladesh

The objectives of this study were to determine the farmers’ socio-economic characteristics, livestock population dynamics, and breeding practices followed by the farmers. Out of 1487 farmers, a major proportion (53.12%) of farmers was middle-aged. Most of the farmers (71.22%) were associated with agricultural activities and had low income per month (52.32%). Livestock keeping patterns of farmers were cattle, goats, buffalo, and combinations of these animals. Female animals were inferred to be more prevalent in different districts (cow 85.08%, doe 81.29%) than males (bull 14.92%, buck 18.71%). In case of cattle and goats, the highest number of farmers maintained a medium size herd, whereas buffalo farmers had a large herd size. In terms of breeding practices, the majority of the farmers (75.55%) performed artificial insemination (AI) in cattle and found it convenient to service their cows. When considering buffalo, and goat, the majority of the farmers (94.12% and 98.50%, respectively) practiced natural services. The findings also demonstrated that the majority of the farmers (73.8% and 82%, respectively) raised crossbreed cattle and buffalo, while just a tiny portion (26.18% and 18%, respectively) raised indigenous breeds. However, this situation was vice versa in case of goat. For choice of the breed according to the farmers, 39.17% of farmers preferred Black Bengal goat, 60.83% preferred cross breed.  This study represents a comprehensive overview of livestock status and existing breeding practices employed by the farmers in different districts of Bangladesh, which may be utilized to implement relevant livestock improvement programs in Bangladesh.

Peternakan Domba di Indonesia semakin banyak dijumpai mulai skala kecil hingga skala besar, selain harga bakalan yang tidak terlau mahal, pemeliharannya pun juga tergolong mudah. Domba memiliki kelebihan yaitu high adaptable sehingga memudahkan peternak baru untuk memulai usaha ini. Usaha peternakan akan berjalan optimal jika di dukung dengan manajemen pemeliharaan yang sesuai. Kelompok Ternak Margo Rukun yang terletak di Bantul, Yogyakarta ini menjadi salah satu bukti nyata penerapan manajemen pemeliharaan yang baik dapat meningkatkan produktivitas ternak. Adapun beberapa cara yang dilakukan agar dapat meningkatkan manajemen pemeliharaan diantaranya edukasi peternak melalui penyuluhan, kunjungan ke peternak millennial dan demonstrasi pembuatan kandang. Kegiatan ini dilakukan bertujuan untuk meningkatkan wawasan peternak tentang menunjang produktivitas ternak melalui manajemen suatu perusahaan, di antaranya manajemen pemeliharaan ternak, manajemen perkadangan hingga manajemen bibit. Sehingga akhir dari kegiatan ini diharapkan peternak pemula dapat meningkatkan produktivitas ternak dengan dibekali berbagai ilmu dan pengalaman dari peternak yang terdahulu.

Strategi Peningkatan Manajemen Pemeliharaan Domba di Kelompok Ternak “Margo Rukun” Yogyakarta

There are a few compelling issues that make the coastal dwellers to accept livestock rearing as an alternative means of livelihood. The study examined the causes and consequences of livestock farming during the fallow period of crop production as perceived by the farmers. Data were collected from 111 villagers of Assasuni upazila of Satkhira district from May 08 to December 23, 2021. Respondents’ perceptions regarding the causes and consequences of livestock rearing were the focus variable and the thirteen selected characteristics of the respondents were the independent issues. All the respondents (100%) had clear perception about the causes. ‘Paddy was cultivated once a year and the land remains fallow during rest of the times’ was the leading cause (1st ranked, 98.37%) of livestock rearing. Almost all of the respondents (98.2%) had high score on perception of consequences. ‘It has been possible to earn some money from the fallow land’ was the 1st ranked consequence (96.26%). Most of the respondents (92.8%) had faced highly severe problems. ‘Shortage of food for cattle during the cropping season’, ‘lack of nutritious fodder’ and ‘lack of good medical treatment’ were the main problems. Knowledge, number of trainings received, cosmopolitanism and extension media contact showed significant positive relationship with the farmers’ perceptions on related causes, consequences and faced problem of livestock rearing. Based on the findings, it is recommended that respective authorities i.e., the Department of Livestock Services, the Department of Agricultural Extension and NGOs might foster livestock rearing to enhance this alternate livelihood in the study area.

Causes and consequences of livestock rearing during the fallow period of crop production

A crossbreeding program was sought to enhance the genetic attributes of coastal sheep by mating them with Garole rams. The breeding program involved a combination of two male Garole with a group of twenty indigenous ewes. These sheep were permitted to mate naturally, without external intervention. Data collection focused on key metrics like birth weight (kg lamb-1), litter size, sex of lambs, instances of dystocia, weaning weight (kg lamb-1), weaning age (days), body weight (kg), age at puberty (days), and mortality rates (%). Crossbred male lambs had an average birth weight of 1.48±0.12 kg, while female lambs averaged 1.57±0.10 kg. Male to female ratio among crossbred lambs was 54.1% to 45.9%. As for weaning, males and females averaged 151.92±2.24 days and 144.00±4.20 days, respectively, with respective weaning weights of 7.98±0.85 kg for males and 8.31±0.90 kg for females. Between 30 and 60 days, male and female lambs gained at 50.16±5.94 g day-1 and 51.44±7.82 g day-1, respectively. Between 331 and 360 days, growth rates were 15.33±3.84 g day-1 and 22.33±6.00 g day-1 for males and females respectively. Dystocia, or difficult births, occurred in 75% of cases. There was no mortality for male lambs, but female lambs experienced a 20% mortality rate. Crossbreeding has emerged as a viable strategy for increasing meat production due to enhanced growth rates and their adaptability to certain environments. It can be concluded that crossbreeding of indigenous coastal sheep with Garole ram can be carried out to increase body weight and ADG. Bangladesh Journal of Animal Science 53 (2): 55-67, 2024 

Performance evaluation of Indigenous and Garole crossbred sheep (F1) under semi-intensive management system

Purpose : The study was conducted to observe the prospects and problems of sheep farming in south-western coastal regions of Bangladesh. Research Method : The study was based on survey data collection. An interview schedule was prepared to collect data from the sheep farmers keeping the objectives in mind. Data were collected from 90 sheep farmers who were chosen randomly from three different upazilas (sub-districts) covering 30 from each. The duration of data collection was from June to September, 2019. Findings : The socio-economic status of the sheep farmers was studied. The majority (61.1%) of the sheep farmers was middle aged group (31-50 years) and more than half (52.2%) of the sheep farmers were found illiterate. The average number of sheep per household was 6.5±3.69. The average age at puberty, age at first lambing, lambing interval, litter size, lactation length and gestation length of coastal sheep were 224.78±10.68 days, 388.39±13.13 days, 214.22±9.12 days, 2.84±0.73, 104.22±13.74 days and 149.44±5.27 days, respectively. Majority (94.44%) of the sheep farmers stated that their income was increased after adopting sheep farming and about 5.6% of the sheep farmers did not sell their sheep yet. More than half (56.7%) of the sheep farmers described sheep farming as high prospect and 43.3% cases it was described as moderate prospect. About 80% of the sheep farmers stated that their problem facing score ranged between 20 and 39 i.e., their problem facing intensity was moderately severe during sheep farming. Originality/ Value : The results of the study revealed that instead of few problems faced by the farmers, the prospects of sheep farming in south-western coastal region was high as it requires less space and investment and it also increased the income of the farmers.
