In this paper, the monopolar corona equation is solved using a modified finite element method (FEM) to give the corona current caused by overhea dc transmission lines without using the commonly-used Deutsch's assumption The method is free from empiricism and entails implicitly a decrease of thsurface field intensity of the conductor with the applied voltage in the same manner as observed experimentally. This in itself represents an additional improvement for the analysis of ionized field where the approximation pertinent to the assumption of constant surface field intensity is mitigated. The calculated corona current as well as the current density at the ground plane agreed with those measured experimentally for a laboratory model.

Finite Element Solution of Monopolar Corona Equation

A method of numerically modeling coupled heat and moisture flow around power cables in steady-state and transient conditions that is based on the Philip and DeVries model for flow in soils is presented. The method has been implemented in a computer program for an IBM or compatible personal computer that utilizes the Galerkin finite-element method. The program uses sparsity-based algorithms that can handle large finite-element grid structures and calculate accurately the steady-state and transient temperatures, moisture distributions, and isothermal contours for power cables buried in media containing complex configurations of soil, boundaries, heat sources and sinks. The program has been validated by data from field tests, which show good agreement between predicted and measured results. >

A new approach to underground cable performance assessment

The operating temperature and the ampacity are important parameters to reflect the operating state of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) submarine high voltage (HV) cables, and it is of great significance to study the electrothermal coupling law of submarine cable under the seawater flow field. In this study, according to the actual laying conditions of the submarine cable, a multi-physical coupling model of submarine cable is established based on the electromagnetic field, heat transfer field, and fluid field by using the COMSOL finite element simulation software. This model can help to analyze how the temperature and ampacity of the submarine cable are affected by different laying methods, seawater velocity, seawater temperature, laying depth, and soil thermal conductivity. The experimental results show that the pipe laying method can lead to the highest cable conductor temperature, even exceeding the maximum heat-resistant operating temperature of the insulation, and the corresponding ampacity is minimum, so heat dissipation is required. Besides, the conductor temperature and the submarine cable ampacity have a linear relationship with the seawater temperature, and small seawater velocity can significantly improve the submarine cable ampacity. Temperature correction coefficients and ampacity correction coefficients for steady-state seawater are proposed. Furthermore, the laying depth and soil thermal conductivity have great impact on the temperature field and the ampacity of submarine cable, so measures (e.g., artificial backfilling) in areas with low thermal conductivity are needed to improve the submarine cable ampacity.

The heat dissipation and temperature distribution in multilayered soil surrounding a buried cable are calculated using the finite difference method and the energy conservation principle. The numerical technique proposed is very suitable for modeling any real cable installation configuration in multilayered soil. The development of the model and the effect of the parameters that influence the conversion and the stability of the numerical solution of the heat dissipation from the underground cable system are studied. >

Thermal analysis of power cables in multi-layered soil. I. Theoretical model

This paper presents the use of the finite element method in the solution of thermal transient problems. The thermal transients in a 275 kV oil/paper insulated buried power cable system is calculated when the load current has a prescribed variation with time. The dielectric loss and shield loss are taken into account. The results are presented and commented. The finite element method has definite advantages over the finite difference method for this application.
