Handbook of Hydrothermal Technology: A Technology for Crystal Growth and Materials Processing

This review overviews the application of solid state NMR spectroscopy to the structural characterization of silicate, and acidic aluminosilicate and borosilicate zeolites focusing on the utilization of new developed methods. We summarize recent results on the investigations of the distribution of silicon atoms into the zeolite framework, as well as the location of F− anions and formation of pentacoordinated silicon species in zeolites synthesized in fluoride medium. Special attention is paid here to the characterization of framework and extraframework boron and most specially aluminium species and the acid sites in zeolites. In Section 6 of this review, we present the basis and practical aspects of advanced NMR experiments used in the characterization of microporous solids paying special attention to quadrupolar nuclei and other methods based on dipolar interactions.

Structural Characterization of Zeolites by Advanced Solid State NMR Spectroscopic Methods

The distribution of Al in cationic zeolites is important in controlling the performance of these materials, but it is challenging to measure this distribution experimentally. We examine the effect of Al ordering in a range of industrially relevant zeolites on CO2 adsorption using molecular simulations based on high quality force fields. A Reverse Monte Carlo method is used to generate Al distributions with specified degrees of order or randomness. Results for a range of Na+-exchanged zeolites show that CO2 adsorption isotherms can be used to distinguish between different degrees of Al ordering. Good agreement with experiments is observed in the limited number of cases where information is available independently about Al ordering. The differences that exist among adsorption isotherms as a function of Al ordering can be understood in terms of the existence of single- and dual-cation sites as quantified by Na–Na radial distribution functions. The Effect of Aluminum Short-Range Ordering on Carbon Dioxide Adsorption in Zeolites

The acid properties of an HZSM-20 Zeolite have been characterized, in comparison to an Hy Zeolite, by IR spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) of ammonia, time-resolved temperature-programmed FTIR of ammonia desorption and by microcalorimetry. Also, catalytic properties were tested for n-hexane conversion. These studies show that for HZSM-20 there is a shift of the bridging OH band to lower wavenumbers, an increase in the ammounia desorption temperature and a higher initial heat of ammonia chemisorption compared to HY. Thus, HZSM-20 contains medium–strong Bronsted sites, ranging in strength between zeilites HZSM-5 and HY. Obviously, the higher Si: Al ratio of HZSM-20 results in an enhanced number of strong acid sites with no second-neighbour aluminium atoms. This leads to a change in the distribution of Bronsted-acid sites. Superacid Bronsted sites could not be detected. Furthermore, the IR spectra of adsorbed pyridine and ammonia revealed the presence of at least two kinds of Lewis-acid sites. Some Lewis sites of HZSM-20 exhibit a weak acid strength and the strong lewis sites are weaker than those of HY. The different acidic properties of both zeolites are reflected in their catalytic activity and selectivity in n-hexane conversion.

Acid properties of ZSM-20-type zeolite

Synthetic cubic faujasites (Si/Al = 4) are synthesized hydrothermally and compared with (1) materials of similar framework composition produced by secondary synthesis from zeolite Y using silicon hexafluoride and (2) zeolite ZSM-20. Solid-state NMR ({sup 29}Si and {sup 27}Al), XRD, FTIR, and surface analysis are used to characterize the materials, which are also evaluated as catalysts by using n-hexane conversion as a test reaction. {sup 29}Si NMR results suggest that the materials produced by primary synthesis have aluminum ordering differing from that observed in materials with similar framework composition (Si/Al) but produced by secondary synthesis. The difference evident in the {sup 29}Si NMR may account for the higher catalytic activity observed with the products of direct synthesis. Surface analysis using depth profiling shows that the siliceous frameworks produced by direct synthesis are more homogeneous than materials produced by secondary synthesis.
