mproved activity–composition relationships for biotite, garnet and silicate liquid are used to construct updated P–T grids and pseudosections for high-grade metapelites. The biotite model involves Ti charge-balanced by hydrogen deprotonation on the hydroxyl site, following the substitution , where HD represents the hydroxyl site. Relative to equivalent biotite-breakdown melting reactions in P–T grids in K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O (KFMASH), those in K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–O2 (KFMASHTO) occur at temperatures close to 50 °C higher. A further consequence of the updated activity models is that spinel-bearing equilibria occur to higher temperature and higher pressure. In contrast, the addition of Na2O and CaO to KFMASH to make the Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O (NCKFMASH) system lowers key biotite-breakdown melting reactions in P–T space relative to KFMASH. Combination of the KFMASHTO and NCKFMASH systems to make Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–O2 (NCKFMASHTO) results in key biotite-breakdown melting reactions occurring at temperatures intermediate between those in KFMASHTO and those in NCKFMASH. Given such differences, the choice of model system will be critical to inferred P–T conditions in the application of mineral equilibria modelling to rocks. Further, pseudosections constructed in KFMASH, NCKFMASH and NCKFMASHTO for several representative rock compositions show substantial differences not only in the P–T conditions of key metamorphic assemblages but also overall topology, with the calculations in NCKFMASHTO more reliably reflecting equilibria in rocks. Application of mineral equilibria modelling to rocks should be undertaken in the most comprehensive system possible, if reliable quantitative P–T information is to be derived.

Progress relating to calculation of partial melting equilibria for metapelites

At low temperatures (<750 °C at moderate to high crustal pressures), the production of sufficient melt to reach the melt connectivity transition (∼7 vol%), enabling melt drainage, requires an influx of aqueous fluid along structurally controlled pathways or recycling of fluid via migration of melt and exsolution during crystallization. At higher temperatures, melting occurs by fluid-absent reactions, particularly hydrate-breakdown reactions involving micas and/or amphibole in the presence of quartz and feldspar. These reactions produce 20–70 vol%, melt according to protolith composition, at temperatures up to 1000 °C. Calculated phase diagrams for pelite are used to illustrate the mineralogical controls on melt production and the consequences of different clockwise pressure-temperature ( P - T ) paths on melt composition. Preservation of peritectic minerals in residual granulites requires that most of the melt produced was extracted, implying a flux of melt through the suprasolidus crust, although some may be trapped during transport, as recorded by composite migmatite-granite complexes. Peritectic minerals may be entrained during melt drainage, consistent with observations from leucosomes in migmatites, and dissolution of these minerals during ascent may be important in the evolution of some crustal magmas. Since siliceous melt wets grains, suprasolidus crust may become porous at only a few volume % melt, as evidenced by microstructures in residual migmatites in which quartz or feldspar pseudomorphs form after melt films and pockets. With increasing melt volume and decreasing effective pressure, assuming the residue is able to deform and compact, the source becomes permeable at the melt connectivity transition. At this threshold, a change from distributed shear-enhanced compaction to localized dilatant shear failure enables melt segregation. The result is a highly permeable vein network that allows transfer of melt to ascent conduits at the initiation of a melt-extraction event. Melt is drained from the anatectic zone via several extraction events, consistent with evidence for incremental construction of plutons from multiple batches of magma. Buoyancy-driven magma ascent occurs via dikes in fractures or via high-permeability zones controlled by tectonic fabrics; the way in which these features relate to compaction and the generation of porosity waves is discussed. Emplacement of laccoliths (horizontal tabular intrusions) and wedge-shaped plutons occurs around the ductile-to-brittle transition zone, whereas steep tabular sheeted and blobby plutons represent back freezing of melt in the ascent conduit or lateral expansion localized by instabilities in the magma–wall-rock system, respectively.

Water-fluxed melting of the continental crust: A review

A recent thermodynamic model for the Na–Ca clinoamphiboles in the system Na2O–CaO–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–O (NCFMASHO), is improved, and extended to include cummingtonite–grunerite and the orthoamphiboles, anthophyllite and gedrite. The clinoamphibole model in NCMASH is adopted, but the extension into the FeO- and Fe2O3-bearing systems is revised to provide thermodynamic consistency and better agreement with natural assemblage data. The new model involves order–disorder of Fe–Mg between the M2, M13 and M4 sites in the amphibole structure, calibrated using the experimental data on site distributions in cummingtonite–grunerite. In the independent set of end-members used to represent the thermodynamics, grunerite (rather than ferroactinolite) is used for FeO, with two ordered Fe–Mg end-members, and magnesioriebeckite (rather than ferritschermakite) is used for Fe2O3. Natural assemblage data for coexisting clinoamphiboles are used to constrain the interaction energies between the various amphibole end-members. For orthamphibole, the assumption is made that the site distributions and the non-ideal formulation is the same as for clinoamphibole. The data set end-members anthophyllite, ferroanthophyllite and gedrite, are used; for the others, they are based on the clinoamphibole end-members, with the necessary adjustments to their enthalpies constrained by natural assemblage data for coexisting clino- and orthoamphiboles. The efficacy of the models is illustrated with P–T grids and various pseudosections, with a particular emphasis on the prediction of mineral assemblages in ferric-bearing systems.

A new thermodynamic model for clino- and orthoamphiboles in the system Na2O?CaO?FeO?MgO?Al2O3?SiO2?H2O?O

The a-x relations recently presented in White et al. (, Journal of Metamorphic Geology, 32, 261-286) are extended to include MnO. This provides a set of internally consistent a-x relations for metapelitic rocks in the MnO-Na2O-CaO-K2O-FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O-TiO2-O2 (MnNCKFMASHTO) system. The mixing parameters for the Mn-bearing minerals were estimated using the micro-ϕ{symbol} approach of Powell et al. (, Journal of Metamorphic Geology, 32, 245-260). Then the Mn-end-member thermodynamic properties were calibrated using a database of co-existing minerals involving literature data from rocks and from experiments on natural materials. Mn-end-members were calibrated for orthopyroxene, cordierite, staurolite, chloritoid, chlorite, biotite, ilmenite and hematite, assuming known properties for the garnet end-member spessartine. The addition of MnO to phase diagram calculations results in a marked expansion of the stability of garnet-bearing assemblages. At greenschist facies conditions garnet stability is extended down temperature. At amphibolite facies conditions, the garnet-in boundary shifts to lower pressure. While the addition of MnO greatly influences the stability of garnet, it has relatively little effect on the stability of other common metapelitic minerals, with the resultant diagrams being topologically very similar to those calculated without MnO. Furthermore, the addition of MnO in the amounts measured in most metapelites has only a small effect on the mode of garnet, with calculated garnet modes remaining smaller than 1% in the P-T range outside its predicted Mn-free P-T range.

The effect of Mn on mineral stability in metapelites revisited: new a–x relations for manganese-bearing minerals

Upper amphibolite facies felsic gneiss from Broken Hill records the metatexite to schlieren diatexite to massive diatexite transition in a single rock type over a scale of tens to hundreds of metres. The metatexites are characterized by centimetre-scale segregation of melt into leucosomes to form stromatic migmatite. The schlieren diatexites are characterized by the disaggregation of the rocks and the development of schlieren migmatite. The massive diatexites represent a higher degree of disaggregation, lack schlieren and contain plagioclase and K-feldspar phenocrysts. The transition from metatexite to schlieren diatexite and massive diatexite was heterogeneous with both disaggregation of the rock on a grain scale and disaggregation of the rock into centimetre- to metre-scale rafts. As melt contents increased, the proportion of material disaggregated on a grain scale increased. The high proportion of melt needed to form diatexites at upper amphibolite facies conditions was the result of an influx of hydrous fluid at temperatures just above the solidus of the diatexites. Nearby metapelitic rocks, with a slightly higher solidus temperature, undergoing subsolidus muscovite breakdown are the likely source of the fluid. Continued heating during and after the influx of fluid led to melt contents of up to c. 60 mol.% in the massive diatexite. The metatexite zone probably involved little added fluid. Continued deformation during cooling and melt crystallization resulted in the extensive development of schlieren and late-stage melt segregations and melt-rich shear bands in the schlieren diatexite zone. The rocks of the massive diatexite zone lack these late-stage segregations, consistent with the cessation of D2 deformation prior to them developing a crystal framework.
