The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. First beams would be available by 2035, marking the beginning of a broad CLIC physics programme spanning 25-30 years.

The discoveries made in the twentieth-century include attempts to understand the origin of the universe, constituents of matter, enigmas of biological reactions, etc. could be possible mainly due to the extensive development in the field of particle accelerators. All the particle accelerators, irrespective of their scientific application, need precise alignment of various components for proper functioning. Survey and alignment activities in particle accelerators comprise precise positioning of various components, mainly magnets within micrometric tolerances over a length of hundreds of meters relative to the reference position as defined by the beam physicists in an arbitrary plane. The practice of specialized techniques and instruments are compulsory to meet these requirements. Due to the advancement in optical technology, low-cost computation, and fast data acquisition, laser trackers are commonly used in the field of large-scale dimensional metrology (LSDM). The area of LSDM also includes survey and alignment of the components at their nominal value with a precision of better than ±100 μm over a distance ranging from hundreds of meters to a few kilometres in particle accelerators. In the present study, the use and applicability of laser trackers in various precision positioning activities applicable to particle accelerators are presented in detail.

The CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) has now finished its second year of operation, providing a testbed for new accelerator technologies and a versatile radiation source. Hosting a varied experimental program, this beamline provides a flexible test facility for users both internal and external to CERN, as well as being an excellent accelerator physics training ground. The energy can be varied between 60 and 220 MeV, bunch length between 1 and 4 ps, bunch charge in the range 10 pC to 2 nC, and number of bunches in the range 1 to 200, at a repetition rate of 0.8 to 10 Hz. The status of the facility with an overview of the recent experimental results is presented.

Status of the CLEAR Electron Beam User Facility at CERN

This Snowmass 2021 contributed paper discusses a Higgs-Energy LEptoN (HELEN) e+e− linear collider based on advances superconducting radio frequency technology. The proposed collider offers cost and AC power savings, smaller footprint (relative to the ILC), and could be built at Fermilab with an Interaction Region within the site boundaries. After the initial physics run at 250 GeV, the collider could be upgraded either to higher luminosity or to higher (up to 500 GeV) energies.
