Livestock sector plays a multi-faceted role in socio-economic development of rural households. Empirical evidences indicate that livestock is an important component of the agriculture system, providing an additional source of income, nutritional cover and act a liquid asset to poor families. With the advancement of agriculture and livestock sector information and knowledge had increasingly become an important factor of production for effective decision-making. Information communication Technology (ICT) services have wide potential to uplift the economy of livestock holders and among various communication media available, the emerging cos effective educational DVD appears to hold great promise. Keeping these in view the present study was planned to identify perceived need of IDFPs and to assess the effectiveness of developed DVD module in IDFPs. The present study was conducted in six randomly selected villages of Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu. Ninety dairy farmers were investigated for identifying perceived need and to assess the effectiveness of DVD based information module. The result indicated that majority of respondent had medium level of perceived needs on breeding, feeding, health care and management. The perceived need index of each practices state that respondents were having highest need in health care i.e.61.78 per cent followed by animal breeding (57.65%) practices. The overall Knowledge gain through educational DVD on IDFPs was 14.21 per cent and maximum gain was observed in health care (16.62%). Thus the developed educational DVD was effective in terms of knowledge gain. Majority of the respondents were ‘satisfied ‘ regarding usefulness in enhancing knowledge (65.00%), suitability of the information to the field situation (72.22%), improves self-confidence (77.78%), arousal of curiosity and interest (62.22%), relevancy and appropriateness of the content (78.89%). Effectiveness of multimedia Digital Video Disk on knowledge gain of improved dairy farming practices

The goat (Capra hircus) is recognized as “Movable Wealth” for nomads, small and marginal farmers and land less labours. It has tremendous potential and projected as the „Animal of Future‟ for rural prosperity and its rearing is a good subsidiary occupation. India is ranked as the second-largest in goat population in the world having 135.17 million goats. The population of goat has declined by 3.82 per cent over the previous census (Anonymous, 2012). Goat farming is the best choice for the rural people in developing countries because of the low investment, wide adaptability, high fertility and fecundity, low feed and management needs, high feed conversion efficiency, quick pay-off and low risk factors. Goat is one of the major livestock species contributing to the livelihood security of farmers in Rajasthan. They can thrive well in adverse climatic conditions using sparse vegetation.

Constraints Faced by Farmers in Goat Rearing Practices in Jaipur District of Rajasthan, India

Goats are among the main meat-producing animals in India, whose meat (chevon) is one of the choicest and has huge domestic demand across the country. Besides meat, goats provide other products like milk, skin, fiber and manure. India, with 135.2 million goats is one of the largest goat owning countries in the world and playing a significant role in livelihood and nutritional security as well as providing supplementary income to nearly 70 million farmers of over 5,00,000 remote villages (CIRG, Annual Report, 2015-16). However, the productivity of goats under the traditional production system is very low owing to their maintenance under extensive system on natural vegetation and shrinking common grazing lands and tree lopping. Moreover, adoption of improved technologies and management practices in the farmers’ flock is very low (Singh and Kumar, 2007). Adoption Level of Improved Goat Farming Technologies by Commercial Goat Farmers in Tamil Nadu

The present investigation was conducted to study the housing and feeding management practices followed by adopted and non-adopted goat farmers in three rural village’s viz. Nahira, Tepesia and Tetelia adopted by “All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Goat Improvement”, Goat Research Station, Assam Agricultural University, Byrnihut, Guwahati. A total of one hundred and five goat farmers adopted under the project and another one hundred and five non-adopted goat farmers from the adopted villages were selected randomly for collection of data. The total sample size was 210. It was observed that 91.43 and 78.10 per cent of adopted and non-adopted goat farmers respectively had separate goat sheds, 87.62 and 72.38 per cent, respectively had closed type of houses, 68.57 and 66.67 per cent, respectively used corrugated iron sheets as roof material, 28.57 and 80.95 per cent, respectively had earthen floor sheds. The common feeding practice of majority of adopted (54.29%) and non-adopted (84.76%) goat farmers were browsing and grazing while 45.71 and 15.24 per cent of adopted and non-adopted goat farmers respectively provided concentrates along with browsing and grazing. An average 85.71 and 56.19 per cent of adopted and non-adopted farmers respectively provided salt to their animals. To conclude management practices namely housing, feeding, health care, breeding and mortality of Assam hill goats were better in adopted goat farmers than in non-adopted goat farmers.

It is closely integrated with the existing farming system on mutually exclusive basis and interdependence with each other for augmenting food and nutritional security of farm households and socio-economic status in the society by utilizing all available agriculture waste, byproducts and common property resources. It is the best insurance against the vagaries of nature due to drought, famine and other natural calamities. Livestock contributes by way of milk and meat production. It enhances soil fertility and crop production through their manure and urine. It also provides additional economic goods like skin, hides wool etc., for trade and commerce activities. Besides, they render services in the form of animal power in croplands, carrying of agriculture goods and transportation of people. In addition, they provide year round gainful employment and dispersed risks evenly and greatly thus minimize the suicidal attitude of the farmers. Sale of livestock products provides timely revenue. Rearing Pattern of Bannur Sheep in its Home Tract

A study was undertaken to assess the adoption level of improved goat rearing practices and the constraints faced in adoption of improved practices among goat farmers in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. The study revealed that high adoption was noticed in feeding colostrum to new born kids (99.29 per cent), deworming of young kids (90.00 per cent), identifying the animals in heat (90.00 per cent) and low adoption was in providing mineral blocks (3.57 per cent), feeding crushed prosopsis, tamarind seeds neem leaves (3.57 per cent), insurance of animals (1.43 per cent) and maintenance of records (0.0 per cent). The major constraints perceived by the goat farmers were exploitation by middlemen (88.57 per cent), complicated loan getting / sanctioning procedure (87.86 per cent), scarcity of green fodder (78.57 per cent), diminishing grazing areas (77.86 per cent).

Adoption and constraints in improved goat rearing practices

A study was conducted among 140 goat farmers in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu to ascertain the management practices followed by them. The study revealed that goats were mostly housed in thatched shed with mud flooring. They were fed tree leaves, crop residues and the fodder. Bleating, mounting and wagging were the signs used for heat detection and natural service followed for breeding of goats. Pregnancy diagnosis was mainly done based on abdominal appearance. Majority of the farmers reported that they have not faced any major disease problems. Foot and mouth disease was the only disease for which animals were vaccinated. Generally deworming was done in kids below the age of 3months. Most of the farmers sold their goats at the age of 4–6 months in village weekly markets to meet the family needs. The study revealed there is a need to create awareness on scientific practices of goat rearing.

A study was carried out on content analysis, a research method that involves the systematic study of the content of messages communicated in Kalnadai Kathir, a bimonthly livestock farm magazine of disseminates timely, recent and useful information on livestock and poultry farming in vernacular language. For this, the issues for ten years, published from 2000 to 2009 were selected with a total of sixty issues. The analysis revealed that the articles were informative, simple and easy to understand by the readers. The major species covered were general livestock, cattle and goat. In poultry species chicken was mainly concentrated. The contents covered in the magazine were mainly aimed for better scientific management practices and occurrence of diseases and its prevention by the farmers. Essay type of articles was the common mode of presentation and the livestock feed and farm related advertisements were published more in the magazine.
