Background Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and Babesia spp. are canine pathogens transmitted by the Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick which can cause varied clinical signs. These pathogens have been investigated in the Philippines, but coinfection has not been reported yet. Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of Ehrlichia/Anaplasma and Babesia spp. in Philippine dogs. Materials and methods A total of 100 dogs from seven different veterinary establishments in Cebu, Philippines, were examined for Ehrlichia/Anaplasma and Babesia spp. infection using peripheral blood smear examination and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Inclusion criteria included a history or presence of tick infestation, anemia, and/or thrombocytopenia. Clinical signs were recorded. Statistical analyses were performed between PCR positivity and clinical signs and hematological results. Results A total of 10 and 18 dogs were found to be positive for Ehrlichia/Anaplasma and Babesia spp., respectively. One animal was PCR positive for both pathogens, which is the first report of coinfection in the country. The most common clinical signs observed include inappetence (89%), lethargy (80%), thrombocytopenia (85%), and anemia (74%). Analyses revealed that inappetence (p=0.044) and weight loss (p=0.028) were found statistically significant with Ehrlichia/Anaplasma infection. Basophil (p=0.001) and eosinophil counts (p=0.000) were also found significantly different between Ehrlichia/Anaplasma spp.-positive and -negative dogs. On the other hand, differential monocyte count (p=0.009) was found significantly different between Babesia spp.-positive and -negative dogs. Conclusion The present study showed low infection rates of canine ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis and babesiosis and provided additional evidence for the presence of the pathogens in the area.

The development of meteor astronomy in modern Ukraine is considered. The specificity of meteor observation methods requires, first of all, the organization of a network of corresponding observation points. To achieve this goal, it is proposed to combine the scientific and technical capabilities of participating organizations in the form of the Ukrainian Meteor Observation Network (UMON). UMON is a set of two or more permanent observation stations located on the territory of Ukraine, which have the hardware and software for basic and one-sided observations of meteors in different wavelength ranges and conduct such observations. UMON aims to solve important problems of meteor research, structure and evolution of meteor streams and showers, the interaction of meteoroids with the Earth’s atmosphere and their chemical composition. The scientific and technical products of UMON stations are the results of high-precision basic or one-sided observations of meteors in different wavelength ranges, as well as of fundamental and applied scientific and technical research.

The radio-engineering complex for determining coordinates of a geostationary telecommunication satellite

During the decade of research, the Research Institute “Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory” (RI “MAO”) developed hardware and software for monitoring, extracting, and calculating the parameters of meteor phenomena using the forward scattering by meteor ionized trail of the signals of over-the-horizon FM-stations broadcasted in the frequency range of 88—108 MHz. This allowed creating a network of observations of meteor phenomena in the radio range, which consists of six stations located in Mykolaiv (three stations), Rivne, Lviv, and Hlukhiv. The stations have identical hardware and software. Yagi-Uda antennas with six or eight horizontal vibrators and SDR receivers based at RTR2832U microchip are used to receive radio signals. The station software performs continuous registration and analysis of received radio signals at the output of quadrature detectors of the receivers, automatic detection of moments of appearances of meteor reflections, formation, and sending by e-mail daily reports on detected meteor phenomena. Equipment setup and current monitoring of stations operations are carried out by the RI «MAO» using remote access to station computers via the Internet. Monthly reports on the number of meteor events recorded by each station are posted on the site of Radio Meteor Observation Bulletin (RMOB). The article presents the results, obtained by the network in 2017—2019, confirming a correspondence of daily variations in the number of meteors registered by network stations, to the known dependence (observation of meteors in the apex and antapex), as well as a correspondence between the expected characteristics (in time and intensity) of three meteor showers (Perseids, Geminids and Quadrantids) and that had been obtained by the network. Recommendations are also given in the article for additional research aimed at achieving the main goal, namely, expanding information about meteor phenomena, including the estimating of kinematic parameters (velocities, radiants) of meteoroids and their relationship with potentially hazardous asteroids.

Formation and development of the Ukrainian network of meteor radio observations

The results of determination of Eutelsat-13B geostationary satellite orbital position in 2015–2016 using European station network for reception of DVB-S signals from the satellite are presented. The network consists of five stations located in Ukraine and in Latvia. The stations are equipped with radio engineering systems developed at the MAO. The measured parameter is time difference of DVB-S signal arrival (TDOA) in the network stations. The TDOA and satellite coordinate errors have been estimated using a numerical satellite motion model as ±2.6 m and ±35 m, respectively. Software applications for the numerical model is taken from OREKIT free space dynamics library.

The use of FM-signals of broadcasting stations for meteor quantity investigation

A method for calculation of slant-range differences to the active geostationary telecommunication satellite (GEO Telecom Satellite) is described in the article. The method is developed in the “Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory” Research Institute. The results of observation of the “Eutelsat-25C” and “Eutelsat-13B” satellites with two receiving stations of digital satellite TV are discussed. The accuracy of determination of slant-range differences to the GEO Telecom Satellite is presented. Method and First Results of Calculation of Slant-Range Differences to Active Geostationary Telecommunication Satellite

An experimental radio-engineering hardware and software complex (RE HSC) has been developed and tested to determine the slant range difference of telecommunications geostationary satellites (TC GSS) by using correlation of the satellite television signals. The processing of signal information accounts for the structure of these signals and does not depend on their payload composition. Accuracy estimation of the slant range difference is equal 5.6 m and determined by the synchronization accuracy of the complex by using single-frequency GPS receivers Resolution- T. Subject to the improvement of the synchronization system based on a highly stable atomic frequency standard and optimal separation of several RE HSCs at the range of about 1000 km, the joint orbit determination error of TC GSS could be equal to about 18 m or 0.1 arcsec. Considered radio-engineering complex may be a prototype of cost-effective all-weather regional network for orbit determination of TC GSS and longterm monitoring of its characteristics.
