This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Kalman filters have received much attention with the increasing demands for robotic automation. This paper briefly surveys the recent developments for robot vision. Among many factors that affect the performance of a robotic system, Kalman filters have made great contributions to vision perception. Kalman filters solve uncertainties in robot localization, navigation, following, tracking, motion control, estimation and prediction, visual servoing and manipulation, and structure reconstruction from a sequence of images. In the 50th anniversary, we have noticed that more than 20 kinds of Kalman filters have been developed so far. These include extended Kalman filters and unscented Kalman filters. In the last 30 years, about 800 publications have reported the capability of these filters in solving robot vision problems. Such problems encompass a rather wide application area, such as object modeling, robot control, target tracking, surveillance, search, recognition, and assembly, as well as robotic manipulation, localization, mapping, navigation, and exploration. These reports are summarized in this review to enable easy referral to suitable methods for practical solutions. Representative contributions and future research trends are also addressed in an abstract level.

Kalman Filter for Robot Vision: A Survey

PURPOSE: A safety monitoring system for operation of heavy equipment, including an image input unit, an integrated image generator, a guide-line generating unit, an image output unit, and a method thereof are provided to enable an operator to recognize the work environment of the heavy equipment without a separate secondary operator. CONSTITUTION: A safety monitoring system for operation of heavy equipment comprises an image input unit(1100), an integration image generator(1200), a guide-line generating unit(1300), and an image output unit(1400). The image input unit is loaded in the heavy equipment. The image input unit inputs a plurality of images which is taken by dividing the domain of heavy equipment surrounding all directions. The integration image generator generates the integration image by using a plurality of images. The integration image includes the domain of heavy equipment surrounding all directions. The guide-line generating unit generates a guide-line for indicating the location apart from the heavy equipment as a fixed distance. The image output unit indicates guide-line in the integration image and outputs.

System and method for monitoring safe operation of heavy machinery

The bolting cabin assistance system prevents operators from facing dangerous situations. This system consists of a bolting robot control system and a top view supervisory system. In order to control the bolting robot, circular Hough transforms and fuzzy reasoning are used. First, the circular Hough transform roughly estimates the location of the bolt hole. After that, errors of estimation are compensated for using fuzzy reasoning. In order to track a bolt hole, a region of interest (ROI) is used. By setting the region in which to search for a bolt hole, the algorithm tracks the location of the bolt hole. In order to choose an ROI, a template-based matching algorithm is used. In order to make the top view supervisory system, four cameras are installed at the left, right, front and back of the robot. The four individual images from the various cameras are combined to make the top view image after correcting for distortion.

Bolting Cabin Assistance System Using a Sensor Network

Object recognition has always been a troublesome issue for computer vision. Despite continuous researches, it still remains a challenge to define features, match the corresponding features, and develop accuracy and precision concurrently while considering computational speed and robustness at the same time. In this paper, we propose a novel feature matching method called the vector mapping descriptor (VMD) to overcome existing issues. We implement sub-pixel units for edge detection to improve the accuracy of invariant features, after which sub-pixel unit edges are enhanced by least squares error estimation, and more accurate geometric features are extracted from the enhanced sub-pixel unit edges of an object’s geometric shape. We defined two geometric features, namely a circle center and a line intersection, used to construct the VMD, which represents the correlation of features consisting of the Euclidean distance and angle. The geometry-based VMD for pattern matching is proposed to match salient feature points between different images effectively under geometric transformation irrespective of missing or additional feature points. The VMD enabled one-to-one feature matching of corresponding grouped feature points from different images resulting in complete object matching. The proposed matching algorithm was invariant to geometric transformation such as translation, rotation, and scale differences and was also able cope with partial distortion or occlusion. Experiments were conducted with an industrial camera to show that our system can be executed in real time.
