Immersive interactive technologies and virtual shopping experiences: Differences in consumer perceptions between augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR)

An effective warning attracts attention, elicits knowledge, and enables compliance behavior. Game mechanics, which are directly linked to human desires, stand out as training, evaluation, and improvement tools. Immersive virtual reality (VR) facilitates training without risk to participants, evaluates the impact of an incorrect action/decision, and creates a smart training environment. The present study analyzes the user experience in a gamified virtual environment of risks using the HTC Vive head-mounted display. The game was developed in the Unreal game engine and consisted of a walk-through maze composed of evident dangers and different signaling variables while user action data were recorded. To demonstrate which aspects provide better interaction, experience, perception and memory, three different warning configurations (dynamic, static and smart) and two different levels of danger (low and high) were presented. To properly assess the impact of the experience, we conducted a survey about personality and knowledge before and after using the game. We proceeded with the qualitative approach by using questions in a bipolar laddering assessment that was compared with the recorded data during the game. The findings indicate that when users are engaged in VR, they tend to test the consequences of their actions rather than maintaining safety. The results also reveal that textual signal variables are not accessed when users are faced with the stress factor of time. Progress is needed in implementing new technologies for warnings and advance notifications to improve the evaluation of human behavior in virtual environments of high-risk surroundings.

Gamification and Hazard Communication in Virtual Reality: A Qualitative Study

‘Soundscapes’ are an increasingly active topic in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and interaction design. From mapping acoustic environments through sound recordings to designing compositions as interventions, soundscapes appear as a recurring theme across a wide body of HCI research. Based on this growing interest, now is the time to explore the types of studies in which soundscapes provide a valuable lens to HCI research. In this paper, we review papers from conferences sponsored or co-sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction in which the term ’soundscape’ occurs. We analyse a total of 235 papers to understand the role of soundscapes as a research focus and identify untapped opportunities for soundscape research within HCI. We identify two common soundscape conceptualisations: (1) Acoustic environments and (2) Compositions, and describe what characterises studies into each concept and the hybrid forms that also occur. On the basis of this, we carve out a foundation for future soundscape research in HCI as a methodological anchor to form a common ground and support this growing research interest. Finally, we offer five recommendations for further research into soundscapes within HCI.

Characterising Soundscape Research in Human-Computer Interaction

Authoring tools for virtual reality experiences: a systematic review

Despite the emerging literature on adopting Mixed Reality headsets in crime scene investigation $\neg $ , it is still debatable on how to employ these headsets and its application for training purposes in higher education and police academies. Hence, this research presents a novel hybrid theoretical framework that combines the Task-technology Fit and Technology Acceptance Model variables and the most prominent features of MR headsets—immersion, interactivity and mobility. The main objective is to explore young investigators’ behavioural intention to adopt MR headsets and their applications for investigation training practices. To validate the developed model, a questionnaire survey was the primary method used to collect data from 160 police academy students using the partial least squares-structural equation modelling technique. The empirical results revealed that task technology fit has a positive impact on the perceived usefulness of MR headset applications and no significant positive impact on the perceived ease of use applications of MR devices. On the contrary, individual technology fit has a positive impact on the perceived ease of use and no significant positive effects were found regarding the perceived usefulness of investigation training purposes. Furthermore, the results indicated that the mobility of MR wearable devices positively influences the perceived ease of use and the perceived usefulness for crime scene practices. The study also addresses the theoretical contributions and practical implications of these outcomes.

Evaluating the Use of Mixed Reality in CSI Training through the Integration of the Task-Technology Fit and Technology Acceptance Model

This paper aims to explore the impact of a collective immersion on learners’ engagement and performance Building on Bandura’s social learning theory and the theory on the sense of presence, we hypothesise that collective immersion has a positive impact on performance as well as cognitive, emotional and behavioural engagement Ninety-three participants distributed in four conditions took part in the experiment The four conditions manipulated the collective and individual dimensions of the learning environment as well as the high and low immersion of the learning material The two conditions that offered a high immersion setting used two types of the novel immersive dome: a large one for collective immersion and a small one for individual use All participants were presented with the same stimuli, an 8-min-long video of a virtual neighbourhood visit in Paris in the 18th century The participants’ reactions were measured during and after the task The learning outcome, as well as the cognitive, emotional and behavioural engagement, were measured Final results showed that collective immersion learning outcomes are not significantly different, but we find that collective immersion impacts the cognitive, emotional and behavioural engagement of learners

An Exploratory Study on the Impact of Collective Immersion on Learning and Learning Experience

Abstract This research reports empirical evidence of the pedagogical benefits of using two interactive types of immersive spherical dome screens (large and small). Results are drawn from an experiment measuring the emotional, cognitive, perceptual/attitudinal states, and learning outcomes of 102 participants divided into control/experimental groups and group/individual pedagogical contexts. Specifically, this paper aimed to investigate the extent to which using interactivity in immersive technologies has positive learning outcomes and provide a positive learning experience. Building upon the INTERACT model, our results show that, in a smaller dome, the learner’s cognitive state, perception and attitudes play a mediating role regarding the impact of interactivity on learning outcomes. However, we did not observe a difference between the larger and smaller dome as for the learning outcomes. These results bring further insight into optimal educational practices in an immersive context and are relevant for pedagogical designers and immersive technologies manufacturers.

Accounting and Soundscapes: Putting Back the ‘Sound’

Popularization of historical data implies going beyond the language and knowledge specific to this scientific field in order to make it understood. This applies to people's perception of the world since many changes have been applied to our surrounding environment. Communicating the way people used to hear, see and smell allows for a better retranscription of what once was, and a more effective connection between the teller and his audience. After the sensory data is gathered through heterography, comes the issue of assembling and presenting them. For the Bretez project, a reconstruction of eighteenth century Paris neighbourhood, the process is done manually. This paper describes a new approach to this aspect of historian's work. Using an immersive editing platform controlled through virtual reality devices, we built a pipeline dedicated to facilitating the creation process for historians, and transparently allowing for exporting the result to multiple video formats (immersive or not). The specific case of prototyping this pipeline with the Bretez project for future user experiments is described and discussed.
