In designing seismic-resistant buildings, it is commonly used Forced-Based Design method. The concept of the Force-Based Design (FBD) method is based on an elastic analysis of the structure and indirectly shows the performance level of the structure towards the effects of the seismic forces. Therefore, it is required an approach that capable of analyzing and evaluating the performance of the inelastic structural response; it is called Performance-Based Design method. This paper uses two methods of Performance-Based Design, there are Direct Displacement-Based Design and Capacity Spectrum Method, by using pushover analysis. The objectives of the research are to analyze and compare performance level of the building in inelastic condition by using these two methods. The structural model reinforced concrete special moment frames. Seismic design code that used in this study is SNI 1726:2012. The reviewed parameter values are displacement and story drift values, estimated plastic hinge response, and performance level of the building from two methods. As the results, all the parameter values of DDBD analysis are more significant than CSM. DDBD produces the drift and displacement values of 0.668 m with the rebar ratio is more significant than 1.00. Meanwhile, the CSM produces the drift and displacement values of 0.501 m with the rebar ratio of 1.00. The failure mechanism of both methods indicates the strong column weak beam where the beams should fail prior to the columns. The structure performance level which refers to ATC-40 indicate that both DDBD method and CSM method are in Damage Control level despite displacement target of the two methods are different which is DDBD produces displacement target of 0.376 m while CSM produces the value of 0.345 m.

Direct Displacement Based Design and Capacity Spectrum Method for Special Moment Resisting Frame

In this study, improved capacity spectrum method (CSM) is proposed. The method can account for higher mode contribution to the seismic response of MDOF systems. The CSM has been conveniently used for determining maximum roof displacement using both demand spectrum and capacity curve of equivalent SDOF system. Unlike the conventional CSM, the maximum roof displacement is determined without iteration using inelastic displacement ratio and R factor calculated from demand spectrum and capacity curve. Three moment resisting steel frames of 3-, 9- and 20-stories are considered to test the accuracy of the proposed method. Nonlinear response history analysis (NL-RHA) for three frames is also conducted, which is considered as an exact solution. SAC LA 10/50 and 2/50 sets of ground motions are used. Moreover, this study estimates maximum story drift ratios (IDR) using ATC-40 CSM and N2-method and compared with those from the proposed method and NL-RHA. It shows that the proposed CSM estimates the maximum IDR accurately better than the previous methods.

Capacity Spectrum Method Based on Inelastic Displacement Ratio

This study investigates the effect of site class, post-yield stiffness ratio, damping ratio, yield-strength reduction factor, and natural period on inelastic displacement ratio of bilinear SDF systems located at the sites classified as NEHRP site class B,C,D. The previous studies developed inelastic displacement ratio using equal displacement rule in the intermediate and long period range. But, this approximation overestimates the inelastic displacement ratio. Furthermore, inelastic displacement ratio has not been developed for the systems having a damping ratio less than 5%. This study conducts nonlinear regression analysis for proposing equations for calculating median and deviation of the inelastic displacement ratio of the bilinear SDOF system having damping ratios ranging from 0 to 20%. Using median and deviation of the inelastic displacement ratio, probabilistic inelastic displacement ratio is estimated, which can be used for performance-based seismic evaluation.

Inelastic Displacement Ratio for SDOF Bilinear and Damping Systems

This study investigates the dynamic instability of strength-limited bilinear single degree of freedom (SDF) systems under seismic excitation. The strength-limited bilinear hysteretic model best replicates the hysteretic behavior of the steel moment resisting frames. To estimate the dynamic instability of SDF systems, the collapse strength ratio is used, which is the yield-strength reduction factor when collapse occurs. Statistical studies are carried out to estimate median collapse strength ratios and those dispersions of strength-limited bilinear SDF systems with given natural periods, hardening stiffness ratios, post-capping stiffness ratios, ductility and damping ratios ranging from 2 to 20% subjected to 240 earthquake ground motions recorded on stiff soil sites. Equations to calculate median and standard deviation of collapse strength ratios in strength-limited bilinear SDF systems are obtained through nonlinear regression analysis. By using the proposed equations, this study estimated the probabilistic distribution of collapse strength ratios, and compared this with the exact values from which the accuracy of the proposed equations was verified.
