Systems, methods and cartridges for carbonating or otherwise dissolving gas in a precursor liquid, such as water, to form a beverage. A gas source can be provided in a cartridge which is used to generate gas that is dissolved into the precursor liquid. A beverage medium, such as a powdered drink mix or liquid syrup, may be provided in the same, or a separate cartridge as the gas source and mixed with the precursor liquid to form a beverage. The use of one or more cartridges for the gas source and/or beverage medium may make for an easy to use and mess-free system for making sparkling beverages, e.g., in the consumer's home.

Method and apparatus for cartridge-based carbonation of beverages

A beverage dispenser particularly adapted for use in the home is disclosed which dispenser includes a source of pressurizing fluid, a dilient tank, dispensing valves and containers of concentrate which are interchangeably insertable in the valves, the flow of pressurizing fluid and diluent conducted through a manifold which is integral with the dispensing valves and the diluent tank and source of pressurizing fluid both being provided with quick disconnect couplings to permit ease of removal and replacement, the elements of the dispenser disposed on a base with the diluent tank and source of pressurizing fluid surrounded by removable covers to provide an attractive, compact and low cost dispensing unit.

A postmix juice dispensing system for reconstituting and dispensing pliable 5 + 1 orange juice at freezer temperatures of from about -10°F to 0°F (-23°C to -18°C), including a pressurizable canister (32) for pressurizing concentrate in a flexible bag (30) and for forcing the concentrate through a concentrate conduit (38) into a heat exchanger (40), then into a metering device (20) and then into a mixing chamber (16) where the concentrate mixes with water fed also through a metering device (20)

Postmix juice dispensing system

A post-mix beverage dispensing system of a small size and capacity includes a minimal number of cabinet-mounted dispensing valve assemblies to be used in combination with a larger number of syrup valve adaptor assemblies. The adaptor assemblies are attached to removable syrup containers and are removable from the cabinet-mounted valve assemblies with the containers. The adaptor assemblies include syrup outlet tubes with flow-rate orifice plates matched to predetermined brix values of syrup flavors. A valve actuation assembly is provided which may selectively dispense either soda water alone or a carbonated post-mix beverage.

Low-cost post-mix beverage dispenser and syrup supply system therefor

The present invention is a closed-loop cooling system in combination with a thermoelectric heat exchanger whereby heat exchange liquid provides quick and efficient heat exchange with a thermoelectric device and is heated or cooled by passing the heat exchange liquid through an air core heat exchanger by energy efficient pump means. In a cooling system, heated water from the heat exchanger is pumped through an air core heat exchanger and then recirculated through a labyrinthine cooling block in thermal communication with the thermoelectric device. The labyrinth within the cooling block is of low back pressure to minimize the amount of energy required to pump the liquid. The liquid-driven rapid heat exchange and the pumping assures circulation and the closed system assures that the liquid is not wasted or lost. The process is carried out without phase change. An apparatus incorporating the invention can be battery-operated and portable and may provide cooling solutions for specific applications where large temperature differentials may be maintained and/or precision temperature control is important in a portable environment. Where the speed of circulation is high and the internal back pressure of the heat exchange liquid is low, there is least expenditure of energy in a closed system.

A thermoelectric refrigeration system may be provided to decrease noise and the number of moving parts or a mechanical freon system may be used. The unit construction may be modular for ease of repair. The cabinet is injection-molded from plastic. Water is supplied to the unit for mixing with the CO2 and syrup from a water reservoir which may be manually filled. The refrigeration system cools the water in the reservoir, as well as the syrup packages and carbonator tank.
