Secretin-Activated Brown Fat Mediates Prandial Thermogenesis to Induce Satiation.
Yongguo Li,Katharina Schnabl,Sarah-Madeleine Gabler,Monja Willershäuser,Josefine Reber,Angelos Karlas,Sanna Laurila,Minna Lahesmaa,Mueez U Din,Andrea Bast-Habersbrunner,Kirsi A. Virtanen,Tobias Fromme,Florian Bolze,Libbey S. O’Farrell,Jorge Alsina-Fernandez,Tamer Coskun,Vasilis Ntziachristos,Pirjo Nuutila,Pirjo Nuutila,Martin Klingenspor +19 more
TL;DR: The gut hormone secretin is identified as a non-sympathetic BAT activator mediating prandial thermogenesis, which consequentially induces satiation, thereby establishing a gut-secretin-BAT-brain axis in mammals with a physiological role of prandials thermogenesis in the control of satiation.

Postprandial Oxidative Metabolism of Human Brown Fat Indicates Thermogenesis.
Mueez U Din,Mueez U Din,Teemu Saari,Teemu Saari,Juho Raiko,Juho Raiko,Nobu Kudomi,Stefanie Maurer,Minna Lahesmaa,Minna Lahesmaa,Tobias Fromme,Ez-Zoubir Amri,Martin Klingenspor,Olof Solin,Pirjo Nuutila,Pirjo Nuutila,Kirsi A. Virtanen,Kirsi A. Virtanen,Kirsi A. Virtanen +18 more
TL;DR: It is shown that whole-body and BAT thermogenesis (oxygen consumption) increases after the ingestion of a mixed carbohydrate-rich meal, to the same extent as in cold stress, and substrates preferred by BAT in postprandial state are glucose or LPL-released NEFAs due to insulin stimulation.

Human brown adipose tissue [15O]O2 PET imaging in the presence and absence of cold stimulus
Mueez U Din,Mueez U Din,Juho Raiko,Juho Raiko,Teemu Saari,Teemu Saari,Nobu Kudomi,Tuula Tolvanen,Tuula Tolvanen,Vesa Oikonen,Vesa Oikonen,Jarmo Teuho,Jarmo Teuho,Hannu Sipilä,Hannu Sipilä,Nina Savisto,Nina Savisto,Riitta Parkkola,Pirjo Nuutila,Pirjo Nuutila,Kirsi A. Virtanen,Kirsi A. Virtanen +21 more
TL;DR: This study suggests that BAT is a minor and deep muscles are a major contributor to CIT, and BAT-specific EE associated with BAT blood flow and NEFA uptake both at RT and during cold stimulus.
Human Brown Fat Radiodensity Indicates Underlying Tissue Composition and Systemic Metabolic Health.
Mueez U Din,Mueez U Din,Juho Raiko,Juho Raiko,Teemu Saari,Teemu Saari,Virva Saunavaara,Nobu Kudomi,Olof Solin,Riitta Parkkola,Pirjo Nuutila,Pirjo Nuutila,Kirsi A. Virtanen,Kirsi A. Virtanen +13 more
TL;DR: BAT radiodensity was found to be correlating with tissue-retained blood and triglyceride content, and can be used as a marker of underlying tissue morphology.

Kalliokoski,Jarna C. Hannukainen +21 more
TL;DR: To test the hypothesis that high‐intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate‐intensity continuous training (MICT) improve brown adipose tissue (BAT) insulin sensitivity, HIIT and MICT are combined for the first time.
