We present and demonstrate a MEMS-based tunable terahertz metamaterial (TTM) composed of inner triadius and outer electric split-ring resonator (eSRR) structures. With the aim to explore the electromagnetic responses of TTM device, different geometrical parameters are compared and discussed to optimize the suitable TTM design, including the length, radius, and height of TTM device. The height of triadius structure could be changed by using MEMS technique to perform active tunability. TTM shows the polarization-dependent and electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) characteristics owing to the eSRR configuration. The electromagnetic responses of TTM exhibit tunable characteristics in resonance, polarization-dependent, and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). By properly tailoring the length and height of the inner triadius structure and the radius of the outer eSRR structure, the corresponding resonance tuning range reaches 0.32 THz. In addition to the above optical characteristics of TTM, we further investigate its potential application in a refraction index sensor. TTM is exposed on the surrounding ambient with different refraction indexes. The corresponding key sensing performances, such as figure of merit (FOM), sensitivity (S), and quality factor (Q-factor) values, are calculated and discussed, respectively. The calculated sensitivity of TTM is 0.379 THz/RIU, while the average values of Q-factor and FOM are 66.01 and 63.83, respectively. These characteristics indicate that the presented MEMS-based TTM device could be widely used in tunable filters, perfect absorbers, high-efficient environmental sensors, and optical switches applications for THz-wave optoelectronics.

Tunable Terahertz Metamaterial with Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Characteristic for Sensing Application

Tunable Dual‐Split‐Disk Resonator with Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Characteristic

We present a design of tunable terahertz (THz) metamaterial (TTM) with single-band and dual-band filtering and switching characteristics. The proposed device is composed of face-to-face split-ring resonator (SRR) and a central bar. By moving the SRRs to change the gap between SRRs and central bar, the free spectrum ranges (FSR) could be bi-directionally broadened 0.14 THz and narrowed 0.19 THz at TE and TM modes, respectively. To control the coplanar moving central bar, the electromagnetic response of TTM device exhibits polarization-dependent characteristic. TTM shows the switching characteristic between single-band to dual-band resonance at TE mode and exhibits resonance-insensitive to the displacement of central bar at TM mode. These results open an avenue to be potentially used for detector, sensor, and switch in the THz-wave applications.

Actively tunable terahertz metamaterial with single-band and dual-band switching characteristic

A tunable terahertz (THz) chain-link metamaterial (CLM) is presented, which is composed of a tailored Au layer fabricated on Si substrate. CLM exhibits bidirectional polarization-dependent characteristic by applying a direct-current (dc) bias voltage on device. This CLM device can be heated up the surrounding temperature to tune the corresponding resonance. The tuning range is 0.027 THz from 0.318 THz to 0.291 THz on the bias of 0.60 V to 1.32 V. By reconfiguring the gap between CLM, there are single-resonance with red-shift at TE mode, and multi-resonance with blue-shift and red-shift at TM mode, respectively. These characterizations of CLM are polarization-dependence and bidirectional tunability. These results show the electromagnetic responses of proposed CLM device is suitable for the uses for resonator, filter, switch, and sensor in the THz frequency range.

We present an optically tunable terahertz (THz) metamaterial by using three-dimensional double split-ring resonators (3D-DSRR), which shows superior properties in adjustability. They exhibit tunable single-band and dual-band resonances by changing height between inner and outer SRRs. The maximum tuning range of dual-band resonance is 0.55 THz from the resonance of 0.45 THz shifted to the resonance of 1.00 THz. The corresponding tuning range of free spectrum range (FSR) spanned two resonances can be tuned from 0.20 THz to 0.75 THz. By changing radius of inner SRR from 14.5 μm to 22.5 μm, the tuning range of resonance is 0.40 THz. While changing the height between inner and outer SRRs and kept the radiuses of inner and outer SRRs as constant as 22.5 μm, 3D-DSRR can be tuned to have two resonances and then merge into one resonance. 3D-DSRR shows a tunable and switchable resonance for single-band and dual-band characteristics. These characterizations are very suitable for the use of tunable multi-resonance applications. To further investigate the stability of 3D-DSRR, the rotation angles of inner and outer SRRs are modified from 0° to 180°, respectively. The corresponding resonances are identical. Such results indicate the proposed device with high stability to allow manufacturing tolerance and potentially to be used in wearable electronic devices, pressure sensors, and other fields.

Tunable terahertz metamaterial by using three-dimensional double split-ring resonators

In this paper, we report the fabrication and characterization of a V-shaped split ring resonator (SRR) metamaterial and have shown that it is possible to tune a negative refractive index by changing the angular gap of V-shaped SRR. Our experimental characterization results are well supported by simulation results using the FDTD method. The reported design of a V-shaped SRR structure has the distinctive advantage of having its capacitance varied by changing the angular gap between its arms. It is also observed that the electromagnetic parameters (such as permittivity and permeability) of metamaterials can be tuned as per our requirement by varying the angular gap.

Tunable negative refractive index metamaterial from V-shaped SRR structure: fabrication and characterization

The enhanced photonic spin Hall effect was previously possible only for the horizontal polarization (H-polarized) in plasmonic systems. The wave-guiding surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) effect is used to report a giant photonic spin Hall effect (G-PSHE) of reflected light for horizontal and vertical polarized waves. This novel work investigated the polarization-manipulated G-PSHE in the modified Kretschmann configuration with an additional glass dielectric thin wave-guiding layer. The ultrathin gold layer and an additional dielectric wave-guiding layer are responsible for achieving millimeter-scale (more than 2 mm to submillimeter) G-PSHE. With this novel approach, polarization manipulation is achieved by employing wave-guiding and the SPR effect. Using a finite element method based simulation study, the impact of an additional thin dielectric wave-guiding layer on G-PSHE is investigated. This study enables the potential application of both horizontal and vertical polarization-based quantum devices and sensors for which light spin plays a pivotal role.

Polarization manipulation of giant photonic spin Hall effect using wave-guiding effect

In this letter, by merging the wave-guiding and surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) effect, a novel method has been proposed to get the enhanced and polarization-switchable photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE). This novelty has been gained by using a dielectric (glass) wave-guiding layer along with a standard Kretschmann configuration. Outcomes offer the opportunity of eliminating any physical alteration of the given structure to govern the desired results. This research is highly suited to controlling the active polarization mode of enhanced PSHE by only altering the incident resonance angle. It will be a simple alternative for modern light polarization (spin) based devices such as switches, beam splitters, filters, etc.
