Outcrop-based 3-D modeling of the Tensleep sandstone at Alkali Creek, Bighorn Basin, Wyoming

The Bighorn Basin has excellent surface exposures of structural geological features, many of which are surface anticlines which are productive of hydrocarbons. Because of these excellent exposures, many people consider the basin rim area fully explored for structural traps. By applying the concepts of concentric folding and understanding the geometries involved in cylindrical and conical folds, this surface information provides clues to the structure at the Phosphoria and Tensleep horizons and how this structure is different from the surface expressed structure. This, in turn, shows that there are areas along the surface expressed anticlines which are prosective and untested. Safford Exploration has done this on two of the anticlinal trends in the basin, Lake Creek and Waugh Dome. This effort has resulted in an excellent Phosphoria discovery on the Lake Creek Anticline.
