Internet addiction is an increasing problem among university students worldwide. The Internet provides numerous educational advantages, but too much Internet use can lead to unfavorable outcomes such as social isolation and poor academic achievement. The objectives of the present study were to assess the prevalence of Internet addiction and its associated factors among female students at Jouf University, Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study using a multistage proportionate sampling technique was done. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the female students of Jouf University during face-to-face interviews with them. This questionnaire consisted of two parts; the first is a structured one for identifying sociodemographic features, and the second is Young’s Internet Addiction Test (YIAT) to assess Internet use among the students. According to the YIAT scale of Internet addiction, 48.6% of the students were scored to be average Internet users. However, 49.5% and 1.9% of the students had moderate and severe addictions, respectively. The vast majority of students (94.6%) preferred home to access the Internet. Communication was the main purpose of using the Internet as it was reported by 47.3% of the students. The majority of the students (79.5%) utilized mobile phones for Internet access while other devices such as a laptop, tablets and desktop were used by 15.4%, 4.3%, and 3.2% of the students, respectively. More than half of the students (54.6%) used the Internet for an average of more than 4 h every day. Also, more than half (51.4%) used it in the evening being the dominant time of using the Internet. Internet addiction was significantly higher among students with high father education, students who sleep 6 h or less, students who utilize the Internet for entertainment purposes, and students who utilize the Internet mainly in the midnight. Nearly half of female students at Jouf University have moderate or severe Internet addiction. The significant predictors of Internet addiction were sleeping hours ≤ 6, midnight as the dominant time for utilizing the Internet and using the Internet for entertainment purposes.

Prevalence of Internet addiction and its associated factors among female students at Jouf University, Saudi Arabia.

Background: Internet addiction and problematic internet use (PIU) constitutes a problem among university students worldwide. Little is known about the adverse effects and unhealthy behaviors among medical students using internet and facebook . The objective of this study was to determine prevalence, associated factors and effects of Internet and Facebook addiction on medical students of Tanta faculty of medicine. Methods: Cross sectional study was conducted in Tanta faculty of medicine, Tanta University, Egypt on 861 Egyptian and Malaysian students at 4 th and 5 th medical year from March to May, 2015 in the academic year 2014-2015. A self-administered questionnaire was used. It included questions on socio-demographic and academic data, patterns of internet use, patterns facebook use, and young internet addiction test (YIAT). Results: The majority of the students of both Egyptian and Malaysian students reported that they have home internet access (85.8% and 89.2%) mostly via mobile phones (92.4%). Facebook the most frequently used social media by Egyptian students (93%), while other social media such as twitter, whatsapp, skype were more frequently used by Malaysian ones (96.4%). Habitual use of facebook late night was reported by 26.9% of Egyptian students compared to only 15.5% of Malaysian ones with statistically significant difference. The most commonly reported adverse effects were: eye irritation, followed by headache, then back pain. Only minor percentage of the students (2.7%) had significant problems in life due to internet use, while the largest percent of them (64.1%) were average internet users. Significantly higher percent of Egyptian students had (PIU) than Malaysian ones (3.8%, 0.9% respectively). Significant negative correlation was found between IAT scores and academic grades of the students . Conclusions: Facebook and internet use affects the social life of medical students. Excessive facebook and internet use is associated with adverse health effects and unhealthy behaviours. Medical students are at increased risk for problematic internet use, and to a lesser extent internet addiction which negatively affects their academic grades.

The prevalence of problematic internet use among a sample of Egyptian adolescents and its psychiatric comorbidities

Background: A growing body of research suggests that Problematic Internet use is becoming more common in society as on-line usage increases everyday. Is psychiatric morbidity common among problematic internet users? What are the characteristics of these patients? Methods: 501 adolescents (295 males), 11 - 18 years old, recruited from 2 private (group 1) and 2 governmental schools (group 2). All were subjected to A Psychiatric sheet, An Informative designed questionnaire, Fahmy and El Sherbiny’s Social Classification Scale, Young internet addiction test (IAT), and Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for children and adolescents (MINI KID). Results: Comparison between the two groups in regard places of use of internet, number of computers available, money spent on internet activities, parental knowledge of use, duration of use and purpose of use, revealed significant differences. Problematic internet use was more frequent in group 1, while internet addiction was more frequent in group 2. A significant relation was found between IAT score and social phobia, specific phobia and oppositional defiant disorder, and a highly significant relation with generalized anxiety disorder and ADHD. Female sex, horror movies and internet problematic use are independent predictors of psychiatric morbidity. Male sex, private schools, high social class are independent predictors for internet use problems in our sample. Conclusion: This study revealed that Egyptian adolescents are at high risk for problematic internet use and to a lesser extent Internet Addiction. Adolescents with Problematic Internet use were more prone to psychiatric disorders (social phobia, specific phobia, oppositional defiant disorders, generalized anxiety disorder and ADHD)
