The primary goal of this project is to provide a summary of extant research regarding humor in the classroom, with an emphasis on identifying and explaining inconsistencies in research findings and offering new directions for future studies in this area. First, the definitions, functions, and main theories of humor are reviewed. Next, the paper explains types of humorous instructional communication. Third, the empirical findings of both the source and receiver perspectives are reviewed. Finally, this paper concludes with advice for educators and suggests potential future research directions for scholars.

A Review of Humor in Educational Settings: Four Decades of Research

The adaptive value of humor and laughter

Background Humour is a complex, dynamic phenomenon that mainly occurs in social situations between two or more people. Most humour research reviews rehearsed as opposed to spontaneous humour and rarely review the patients’ perspective. Aim  We explore patients’ perspectives on the use of humour in health care. We discuss the asymmetrical and divergent humour use between patients and clinical nurse specialists and posit nurses’ approaches to risk as a contributing factor. Design  A constructivist grounded theory collated researcher-provoked (interviews, observation, field notes, pre-and post-interaction audio diaries) and non-researcher-provoked data (naturally occurring interactions) over 18 months. This paper is based upon four patient focus groups. A constant comparison approach to data collection and analyses was applied using interpretative and illustrative frameworks that balanced what was ‘known’ and ‘unknown’ about humour. Setting and participants  Patients were recruited from four patient–peer groups. Three audio-taped (n = 20) and one observed focus group interactions (n = 12) were undertaken at the groups’ regular meeting places. Results  Patients hold a broad appreciation of humour and recognize it as being evident in subtle and nuanced forms. Patients wish health-care staff to initiate and reciprocate humour. Conclusion  A chasm exists between what patients apparently want with regard to humour use in health-care interactions and what actually transpires. Initiating humour involves risk, and risk-taking requires a degree of self-esteem and confidence. Nurses are, arguably, risk-averse and have low self-esteem. Future research could review confidence and self-esteem markers with observed humour use in nurses and their interactions across a range of specialities.

Humour in health-care interactions: a risk worth taking.

Certain health issues such as mental illness and sexually transmitted infections evoke feelings of shame, which typically causes withdrawal coping, making it challenging for campaign planners to effectively communicate pertinent information in intervention messages. In three experimental studies, humor is tested as an advertising strategy that might attenuate the negative effects of shame and increase message persuasion. As an individual factor that correlates with social anxiety and vulnerability to shame, fear of negative evaluation (FNE) is found to be a significant moderator to shame and humor level interaction. Low FNEs favored humor ads over no-humor ads when shame induction was low but favored no-humor ads over humor ads when shame induction was high. This response pattern was in contrast to the patterns found for high FNEs. The results show the strongest humor benefits for socially anxious individuals (high FNEs) with high shame-inducing health issues. Theoretical and practical implications are given.

Humor Effects in Shame-Inducing Health Issue Advertising: The Moderating Effects of Fear of Negative Evaluation

Studies including humor in testing were reviewed using performance and self-report criteria. With effects of humor judged using performance (test score) criteria, no supporting main effects were found. However, researchers found interactions with anxiety, gender, stress instructions, and humor appreciation. Humor affected students' perceptions of testing; with self-report criteria, there were supportive main effects and an interaction with humor type and field independence. Findings are discussed in terms of the construct of humor, humor type, format, and criteria measures. Additional topics for discussion include interactions, receiving a humor treatment, problematical subgroups, and implications for research and practice. Would testing be more humane with humor included? Test developers might consider including humor in tests, especially under certain conditions.

Humor in Educational Testing: A Review and Discussion

Previous research and theory suggest that a person's anxiety level plays a functional role in determining his responsiveness to and appreciation of humor. Based upon the theoretical view that humor serves to dissipate anxiety, it was proposed that highly anxious individuals would respond more favourably to a therapist's use of humor than low trait-anxiety individuals. To test the hypothesis 87 undergraduate students in psychology were classified according to their measured level of trait anxiety (high or low, on the Spielberger Trait-Anxiety Inventory). Subjects evaluated a therapist who used humor in a written therapist-client dialogue. Results were contrary to prediction; an inverse relation between anxiety and appreciation of humor obtained.
