The current research examines the attitudes towards the use of social media sites to support the learning process among Master's in Educational Technologies students at the University of Bisha in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including perceptions of educational benefits as well as disadvantages and barriers. Forty two students participated in this study and completed a web-based survey. The findings revealed a largely positive attitude toward the usage of social media sites in the classroom, attributing to it many advantages, such as increasing the quality and efficiency of communication between students and teachers, greater access to information, as well as stronger social connections and ease of collaboration among classmates. However, the participants also mentioned cyberbullying, privacy issues and distractions as some difficulties associated with using these tools.

The Use of Social Media as a Tool for Learning: Perspectives of Masters in Educational Technologies students at Bisha University, Saudi Arabia

Most individuals are not born to be public speakers; they are educated to be developed as one. When they are in front of an audience being the focus of attention, they experience emotions leading to nausea and excessive sweating because of fear and anxiety. Individuals who have a fear of speaking in public suffer from strong fear in social performance situations and social spheres, which is known as glossophobia. This research aims to discover the different factors that cause speaking anxiety among the pre-service teachers of Mountain Province State Polytechnic College Teacher Education Department (MPSPC-TED) in Philippines and to suggest strategies that could help prevent them from having glossophobia problem. Samples of interview output, coding, and careful analysis and interpretation of the gathered data from the selected 50 undergraduate students who had research oral presentations, oral lesson demonstrations, and oral speaking presentations have been transcribed and found out major themes that cause glossophobia problems, i.e., linguistic obstacles, audience‟s manifestation, mastery of the topic and particular motives. Knowing what causes these problems, this study proposed the DISRUPT strategy to reduce students‟ public speaking anxiety effectively.

Glossophobic Experience Amongst MPSPC Philippines Pre-service Teachers Through Oral Speech Presentations

Humans as social beings always interact with each other. There are some people who experience fear or anxiety when talking to other people in public which is called glossophobia. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of group counseling services with reframing techniques in overcoming the problem of glossophobia or anxiety and fear of public speaking. The sampling technique in this study uses purposive sampling. The data collection technique in this study used a glossophobia questionnaire. The results of this study were group counseling services with reframing techniques were effective in dealing with the problem of glossophobia.

Group counseling with reframing techniques as intervention for handling student glossophobia problems

Students’ willingness to respond in class is an important factor to ensure language usage and language acquisition. Literature reviews reveal that learners' levels of anxiety and self-confidence are predictors of students’ willingness to communicate in class. However, there has been a lack of studies conducted in the local context regarding anxiety as a predictor of willingness to respond in English. This study looked into students’ anxiety levels while communicating in English during Occupational Purpose class and the reasons for not being willing to respond in the online class orally. The class consisted of students from Malaysia and China studying in a local Malaysian university. During class, the instructor had to call out names to get students to answer questions asked. Classes were entirely conducted online and the assessments cover both written and oral aspects. Horwitz’s Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) was adapted and Baharuddin’s three levels of anxiety mean measurement was used in this study. The FLCAS scale included 33 items of a five-point Likert scale which in this study was reversed with 1 “Strongly disagree” to 5 “Strongly agree” to measure the level of anxiety. The data obtained were analysed using descriptive analysis to include percentages and mean. The finding indicates that level of anxiety is not a predictor of WTC.

A case study on challenges of students' willingness to orally respond in english during class sessions in sabah

Speaking English in public or in front of peers in a classroom setting alone may create uneasy feelings to the speaker or presenter, especially to those who are not good in using a second language or foreign language. Hence, this particular study was conducted to evaluate university students’ speaking anxiety in English oral presentations in relation to their level of speaking anxiety, genders, programs and proficiency. A set of questionnaires that consisted of 33 items was adapted from Horwitz, Horwitz and Cope’s (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and distributed to 199 students from four different faculties in UiTM Melaka. The data gathered through the questionnaires was then analysed using statistical analysis (SPSS). The results indicated that the participants experienced moderate level of speaking anxiety during English oral presentations due to fear or negative evaluation by their peers. Regarding genders, there was a slightly different level of anxiety where female participants were identified to be more anxious compared to male participants. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference detected in terms of the students’ programs and their level of speaking anxiety; however, the students’ English proficiency did affect their level of speaking anxiety. Therefore, the results of this study concluded that the students’ levels of speaking anxiety and proficiency were significant in identifying their overall speaking anxiety. Thus, this can assist both the lecturers and students on how to overcome the issue in the future.

Glossophobia: evaluating university students' speaking anxiety in english oral presentations

This paper aims to highlight recommended lessons for teachers to use social media platforms in the English classrooms. It provides lesson plans for teachers as guidelines to integrate social media platforms in the 21st century classroom, particularly in schools. Generally, there are generation gaps between educators and students in the 21st century classroom. In narrowing the generation gap, this paper provides tips on the characteristics of teachers best suited to teach the 21st century students. Innovative technologies are presented as tools especially on social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram which could be used by English teachers to support language learning process. As these apps are easily available to be downloaded in smart devices, integrating them into classroom lessons is recommended for implementations by the English educators.
