Detection and Classification of a brain tumor is an important step to better understanding its mechanism. Magnetic Reasoning Imaging (MRI) is an experimental medical imaging technique that helps the radiologist find the tumor region. However, it is a time taking process and requires expertise to test the MRI images, manually. Nowadays, the advancement of Computer-assisted Diagnosis (CAD), machine learning, and deep learning in specific allow the radiologist to more reliably identify brain tumors. The traditional machine learning methods used to tackle this problem require a handcrafted feature for classification purposes. Whereas deep learning methods can be designed in a way to not require any handcrafted feature extraction while achieving accurate classification results. This paper proposes two deep learning models to identify both binary (normal and abnormal) and multiclass (meningioma, glioma, and pituitary) brain tumors. We use two publicly available datasets that include 3064 and 152 MRI images, respectively. To build our models, we first apply a 23-layers convolution neural network (CNN) to the first dataset since there is a large number of MRI images for the training purpose. However, when dealing with limited volumes of data, which is the case in the second dataset, our proposed “23-layers CNN” architecture faces overfitting problem. To address this issue, we use transfer learning and combine VGG16 architecture along with the reflection of our proposed “23 layers CNN” architecture. Finally, we compare our proposed models with those reported in the literature. Our experimental results indicate that our models achieve up to 97.8% and 100% classification accuracy for our employed datasets, respectively, exceeding all other state-of-the-art models. Accurate brain tumor detection using deep convolutional neural network

The automated classification of brain tumors plays an important role in supporting radiologists in decision making. Recently, vision transformer (ViT)-based deep neural network architectures have gained attention in the computer vision research domain owing to the tremendous success of transformer models in natural language processing. Hence, in this study, the ability of an ensemble of standard ViT models for the diagnosis of brain tumors from T1-weighted (T1w) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is investigated. Pretrained and finetuned ViT models (B/16, B/32, L/16, and L/32) on ImageNet were adopted for the classification task. A brain tumor dataset from figshare, consisting of 3064 T1w contrast-enhanced (CE) MRI slices with meningiomas, gliomas, and pituitary tumors, was used for the cross-validation and testing of the ensemble ViT model’s ability to perform a three-class classification task. The best individual model was L/32, with an overall test accuracy of 98.2% at 384 × 384 resolution. The ensemble of all four ViT models demonstrated an overall testing accuracy of 98.7% at the same resolution, outperforming individual model’s ability at both resolutions and their ensembling at 224 × 224 resolution. In conclusion, an ensemble of ViT models could be deployed for the computer-aided diagnosis of brain tumors based on T1w CE MRI, leading to radiologist relief.

Classification of Brain Tumor from Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Vision Transformers Ensembling

The study of neuroimaging is a very important tool in the diagnosis of central nervous system tumors. This paper presents the evaluation of seven deep convolutional neural network (CNN) models for the task of brain tumor classification. A generic CNN model is implemented and six pre-trained CNN models are studied. For this proposal, the dataset utilized in this paper is Msoud, which includes Fighshare, SARTAJ, and Br35H datasets, containing 7023 MRI images. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the dataset belongs to four classes, three brain tumors, including Glioma, Meningioma, and Pituitary, and one class of healthy brains. The models are trained with input MRI images with several preprocessing strategies applied in this paper. The CNN models evaluated are Generic CNN, ResNet50, InceptionV3, InceptionResNetV2, Xception, MobileNetV2, and EfficientNetB0. In the comparison of all CNN models, including a generic CNN and six pre-trained models, the best CNN model for this dataset was InceptionV3, which obtained an average Accuracy of 97.12%. The development of these techniques could help clinicians specializing in the early detection of brain tumors.

Classifying Brain Tumors on Magnetic Resonance Imaging by Using Convolutional Neural Networks

Cancer is a major medical problem worldwide. Due to its high heterogeneity, the use of the same drugs or surgical methods in patients with the same tumor may have different curative effects, leading to the need for more accurate treatment methods for tumors and personalized treatments for patients. The precise treatment of tumors is essential, which renders obtaining an in-depth understanding of the changes that tumors undergo urgent, including changes in their genes, proteins and cancer cell phenotypes, in order to develop targeted treatment strategies for patients. Artificial intelligence (AI) based on big data can extract the hidden patterns, important information, and corresponding knowledge behind the enormous amount of data. For example, the ML and deep learning of subsets of AI can be used to mine the deep-level information in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, radiomics, digital pathological images, and other data, which can make clinicians synthetically and comprehensively understand tumors. In addition, AI can find new biomarkers from data to assist tumor screening, detection, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis prediction, so as to providing the best treatment for individual patients and improving their clinical outcomes. Artificial intelligence assists precision medicine in cancer treatment

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) constitute a widely used deep learning approach that has frequently been applied to the problem of brain tumor diagnosis. Such techniques still face some critical challenges in moving towards clinic application. The main objective of this work is to present a comprehensive review of studies using CNN architectures to classify brain tumors using MR images with the aim of identifying useful strategies for and possible impediments in the development of this technology. Relevant articles were identified using a predefined, systematic procedure. For each article, data were extracted regarding training data, target problems, the network architecture, validation methods, and the reported quantitative performance criteria. The clinical relevance of the studies was then evaluated to identify limitations by considering the merits of convolutional neural networks and the remaining challenges that need to be solved to promote the clinical application and development of CNN algorithms. Finally, possible directions for future research are discussed for researchers in the biomedical and machine learning communities. A total of 83 studies were identified and reviewed. They differed in terms of the precise classification problem targeted and the strategies used to construct and train the chosen CNN. Consequently, the reported performance varied widely, with accuracies of 91.63–100% in differentiating meningiomas, gliomas, and pituitary tumors (26 articles) and of 60.0–99.46% in distinguishing low-grade from high-grade gliomas (13 articles). The review provides a survey of the state of the art in CNN-based deep learning methods for brain tumor classification. Many networks demonstrated good performance, and it is not evident that any specific methodological choice greatly outperforms the alternatives, especially given the inconsistencies in the reporting of validation methods, performance metrics, and training data encountered. Few studies have focused on clinical usability.

Convolutional Neural Network Techniques for Brain Tumor Classification (from 2015 to 2022): Review, Challenges, and Future Perspectives

With the advancement in technology, machine learning can be applied to diagnose the mass/tumor in the brain using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This work proposes a novel developed transfer deep-learning model for the early diagnosis of brain tumors into their subclasses, such as pituitary, meningioma, and glioma. First, various layers of isolated convolutional-neural-network (CNN) models are built from scratch to check their performances for brain MRI images. Then, the 22-layer, binary-classification (tumor or no tumor) isolated-CNN model is re-utilized to re-adjust the neurons’ weights for classifying brain MRI images into tumor subclasses using the transfer-learning concept. As a result, the developed transfer-learned model has a high accuracy of 95.75% for the MRI images of the same MRI machine. Furthermore, the developed transfer-learned model has also been tested using the brain MRI images of another machine to validate its adaptability, general capability, and reliability for real-time application in the future. The results showed that the proposed model has a high accuracy of 96.89% for an unseen brain MRI dataset. Thus, the proposed deep-learning framework can help doctors and radiologists diagnose brain tumors early.
