BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection (STI) is a majorglobal cause of acute illness, infertility, long-term disability anddeath, with serious medical and psychological consequences tomillions of men, women and infants. Moreover, in Ethiopia,epidemiological studies on STI among STI clinic clients arelimited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine theprevalence and associated risk factors of sexually transmittedinfection (STI).METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted between Apriland August 2014 among STI clinic clients in Gondar Townhospitals and health centers. One hundred twenty studyparticipants who fulfill the criteria were included. Differentlaboratory methods and techniques were applied to identify thepossible microorganisms. Data were entered and analyzed usingSPSS version 20. Logistic regression was used to determine riskfactors for STI and P values < 0.05 was considered statisticallysignificant.RESULTS: The overall laboratory test confirmed that STIsprevalence was 74.1% with 32.5% being Candida spp., 30% T.palladium, 20.8% N. gonorrhoeae and 14.2% T. vaginalis. Two ormore organisms were isolated in 20% of the study subjects. Riskfactors for STI hadknowledge about STI and alcoholconsumption.CONCLUSION: The prevalence of N. gonorrhoeae, T. pallidum,T. vaginalis, and Candida spp. in the study area was high. It needshealth education programs, promotes condom utilization and morecomprehensive community based STI studies.

Prevalence of Selected Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) and Associated Factors among Symptomatic Patients Attending Gondar Town Hospitals and Health Centers

Ozet Amac: Trichomonas vaginalis trikomoniazisin etkeni olan anaerobik flajellali protozoan bir parazittir. Amacimiz, Temmuz 2007 -Mayis 2008 araliginda Kerkuk hastanelerine basvuran vajinal akintili kadinlarla eslerinde Trichomonas vaginalis ve diger mikroorganizmalarin sikligini arastirmaktir. Materyal ve Metod: Vajinal ve servikal suruntu ve idrar ornekleri uzerinde laboratuar incelemeleri yapildi, uygun ortamda suruntu ve idrar kulturleri ve kan orneklerinde serolojik testler yapildi. Bulgular: Vajinal akintili kadinlarda T. vaginalis orani %2.8 iken, eslik eden mikroorganizmalar %8.0 Candida albicans ve %0.8 Neisseria gonorrhoea olmustur. T. vaginalis and C. albicans'in mikst enfeksiyon orani %1.6, T. vaginalis ve Escherichia coli koenfeksiyon orani %1.6, Staphylococcus aureus ile % 0.8, proteus ile %0.4 olarak bulunmustur. Vajinal suruntudeki enyaygin patojen mikroorganizma %l2.4 Staph. Aureus, ardindan %11.6 E. coli ve %8.0 C. albicans olmustur. Idrar orneklerindeki patojen ajan orani daha dusuk bulunmustur. Uretral suruntude N. gonorrhea orani %35.0, E. coli orani %.5.0 bulunmus, vajinal suruntu ve idrarda en yuksek enfeksiyon orani 15-29 yas grubunda bulunmustur. Sonuc: Trikomoniazisle ilgili patojen enfeksiyonlar bayanlarda daha sik izlenir, orani 15-29 yas grubunda en yuksektir ve idrarda gonore orani yuksektir.

Trichomonas Vaginalis and Associated Microorganisms in Women with Vaginal Discharge in Kerkuk-Iraq

Background: Pathological vaginal discharge is a common complaint of women in reproductive age worldwide caused by various agents. The prevalence and etiologic agents vary depending on the population studied. Management of vaginal discharge in low-income countries, typically depend on the syndromic approach, which limits understanding the specific causative agents. We determined the proportion of bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, and trichomoniasis among women with vaginal discharge at a regional referral hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study between June and August of 2017 among nonpregnant women at Amana Regional Referral Hospital. Experienced staff performed physical examination to establish a clinical diagnosis, and collection of the high vaginal swab for microscopic examination. Descriptive statistics were performed to assess the characteristics of study participants and the proportion of vaginal infections.
Results: A total of 196 samples were collected, of all, 128 (65.3%) had either bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, or trichomo- niasis. Bacterial vaginosis was the leading infection at 33.2%, followed by candidiasis (19.4%) and trichomoniasis (13.3%). Laboratory confirmed vaginal infection were generally found more in age below 25, unmarried, and those employed or petty business.
Conclusion: The proportion of bacterial vaginosis in women with vaginal discharge was relatively higher than others, and the presence of vaginal infection relate to socio-demographic characteristics. Further advanced studies are needed to understand the potential role of aetiologic agents in causing vaginal infections.

Bacterial vaginosis, the leading cause of genital discharge among women presenting with vaginal infection in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Introduction There are no studies assessing the simultaneous occurrence of Candida albicans (C. albicans) and Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis) in the primary health care in Brazil. Despite different conditions to establishment of each one, the co-detection of both has been reported by some authors in previous studies from other regions. Aim To compare the prevalence of T. vaginalis and C. albicans in correlation with associated variables. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study conducted in a family health clinic in the Federal District of Brazil, between November 2014 and March 2015. Vaginal swabs were collected from 201 women of the reproductive age selected from women registered at the family health clinic. Minors and pregnant women were excluded. The rates of T. vaginalis and Candida albicans prevalence were evaluated with vaginal pH, the whiff test, sexual practices and other social and demographic variables. Difference between proportions was assessed by Z-Test. Results C. albicans was present in 20% of the women, while 16% of them had T. vaginalis. The simultaneous occurrence of the agents was found in 1.5%. Significant differences were found between prevalence rates for the variables race/skin colour, practice of anilingus and lifetime number of sexual partners. Conclusion The prevalence of T. vaginalis exceeds C.albicans among women with higher numbers of sexual partners. The prevalence of C. albicans was higher than T. vaginalis among white women and those who practice active and receptive anilingus. The simultaneous occurrence of the two microorganisms was uncommon.

Epidemiological study of infection with Trichomonas vaginalis in Kirkuk city

Amoebiasis is is widely distributed in Iraq. In order to search for alternative new antiamebic drugs, a study was planned to evaluate the efficacy of metronidazole and some medical herbs on the viability of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites in vitro culture. E. histolytica was isolated from stool examination of patients attended Pediatric Hospital Kirkuk, using wet mount technique. The active trophozoites were cultured in Lock egg medium. After isolation of trophozoites tested against various concentrations of metronidazole, and medical herbs including Artemisia herba alba, Punica granatum and Tecurium polium , using viability Pandroff tube, which contain Jones broth medium. Both aqueous and alcoholic extractions of medical herbs were used, at concentrations of 50%, 25%, 12.5% and 6.25%. Results: Metronidazole had highest inhibitory effect on viability of E. histolytica trophozoites than medical herbs. Medical herbs, Artemisia herba alba, recorded highest inhibitory properties against Entamoeba histolytica, followed by Punicaa granatum and Tecurium polium. B ackground : Severe Toxoplasma gondii infection in early pregnancy brings the risk of transferring the infection to the unborn baby with serious abnormality. The aim of identifying toxoplasmosis in early stage is to recognize mother-to-infant transmission for early cure to avoid undesirable complication. Using serological test to determine anti-Toxoplasma specific IgG and IgM antibodies possibly may not identify new or even previous infection. However, many molecular techniques are now being extensively used through the world among these methods polymerase chain reaction PCR technique emerged as the most widely accepted method for directly detection infectious agents. Thus, the goal in this study is to compare immunoassay by indirect (IgM and IgG) detection diagnostic technique and conventional PCR as molecular assay in diagnosis of T. gondii in whole blood of aborted females in Kirkuk province-Iraq. Methods : Here we applied indirect routine serological diagnosis test for detection toxoplasma specific IgM and IgG antibodies in females blood with spontaneous abortion and compare the efficiency of this method with PCR technique to detect the pathogenic protozoan T. gondii based on identification of (the B1 gene) as a target. Eighty-one females were incorporated in this study with a history of recurrent spontaneous abortions. All of these cases were limited to only females in the reproductive age (19-44 years). There are several serological diagnostic test kits available in Iraqi markets; however, the sensitivity and effectiveness of these commercial kits are not examined by most of the laboratories before they are obtained. Therefore, blood samples from female patients with single or repeated abortion were tested for detection specific anti-Toxoplasma antibodies using commercially available (Medical-Biozec) kit in Kirkuk province and compare that with the results are obtained from conventional PCR assay . Results : The results showed that the conventional-PCR analysis is remarkably more sensitive than serological test, with a relatively high proportion of the positive samples for PCR compared with the serological diagnosis. The serological test results revealed that anti -T. gondii antibodies were detected in 14.81% of aborted women, 3.7% of them were positive for IgM, while 11.11% were positive for IgG. On the contrary, conventional PCR analysis found that 44.44% of aborted women showed positive result for B1 gene of T. gondii. Despite this, most of positive serology-aborted women exposed positive result for B1 gene of T. gondii, except two cases include false-positive IgM results. http://dx.doi.org/10.25130/tjps.23.2018.00 4
