The use of advanced technologies, especially predictive computing in the health sector, is on the rise in this era, and they have successfully transformed the sector with quality insights, better decision-making, and quality policies. Even though notable benefits have been achieved through the uptake of the technologies, adoption is still slow, as most of them are still new, hence facing some hurdles in their applications especially in national and international policy levels. But the recent case of COVID-19 outbreak has given an opportunity to showcase that these technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI), have the capacity to produce accurate, real-time, and reliable predictions on issues as serious as pandemic outbreak. A case in point is how companies such as BlueDot and Metabiota managed to correctly predict the spread route of the virus days before such events happened and officially announced by the World Health Organization. In this chapter, an increase in the use of AI-based technologies to detect infectious diseases is underlined and how such uses have led to early detections of infectious diseases. Nevertheless, there is evidence that there is need to enhance data sharing activities, especially by rethinking how to improve the efficiency of data protocols. The chapter further proposes the need for enhanced use of technologies and data sharing to ensure that future outbreaks are detected even earlier, thus accelerating early preventive measures.

The Rise of Machine Intelligence in the COVID-19 Pandemic and Its Impact on Health Policy

Why climate change mitigation plans often fail to gain global consensus is due to geo-economic political influences. Where the question often arises of why should countries, that contribute less to climate change, made to suffer the most, and why countries that benefit economically the most from climate change, are now asking others to reduce economic activities on the basis of reducing pollution emissions. This chapter introduces the concept of regional decarbonization. It outlines how several attempts in proposing climate change mitigation plans have attracted resistance from developed economies. These negative responses have occurred even though proposed alternative models can theoretically work and often call for a systemic shift that can disrupt global economies prompting a perception that they are a threat that governments are not always apt to accommodate.

Decarbonization and Urban Sustainability

Rapid urbanization coupled with climate change is causing a number of issues relating to urban governance and financing, which ultimately impacts on the liveability levels of urban areas. As the world turns towards smart cities to better increase economic performance of cities, there seems to be a lack of urban governance policy regarding climate change. Technology can aid on this front but must not be designed as a product solely for private economic gains, and instead designed to aid the public good. Smart cities, being a concept already making use of technology, can be redesigned to better make use of its technological background to ensure a better response to contemporary urban challenges, including that of climate change.

This concluding chapter dwells into the theories and content that underpin this book. As a consequence, it explores, as an essay, how thematically to achieve resilience and sustainability without disrupting current economic models. Recognizing that no disruptions to local, regional and global economies will encourage a wider adoption of the proposed model, the consequential sustainability outcomes can still be wider in their encouragement of a more sustainable transition within the current capitalist culture. The final chapter thus explores how the proposed model can be applied to navigate through the contemporary capitalist culture, and how this culture can benefit from this approach as opposed to a disruptive shift that could destabilize and affect global markets.
