Entangled roots and otherwise possibilities: An anthropology of disasters COVID-19 research agenda

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to highlight how keeping a reflective research journal can help disaster researchers to work in a more ethical and engaged way. Design/methodology/approach: The author analyses the reflective research diary to illustrate how keeping it has helped the author, a white, non-Indigenous researcher, navigate British academia whilst trying to plan a collaborative project with Indigenous peoples during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Findings: The author draws out some of the ways that academic institutions can undermine ethical research practice through opaque structures and by incentivising pressuring early-career researchers (ECRs) to conduct fieldwork in dangerous times. The author demonstrates ways the rpeers and author have tried to push against these structures, noting that this is not always possible and that their efforts are always limited without institutional support or change. Originality/value: Many ECRs and PhD students have written reflective accounts about the ethical challenges they have faced during fieldwork. In this article, the author adds to this by building on literature in disaster studies and positing how ethical and engaged research can be conducted within British (colonial) institutions. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.

The reflective research diary: a tool for more ethical and engaged disaster research

The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted work patterns in academia. There is mounting evidence that men's publishing productivity increased while women's decreased. Yet most studies of this phenomenon have analyzed authorship and peer review data separately, without considering their interrelationship. We conceptualize authorship and peer review together as visible and invisible forms of labor, a lens that connects service work to other forms of gendered unpaid labor. Drawing on a data set of author and review activity at American Ethnologist from 2014 to 2021, we blend quantitative analysis with qualitative insights from our positions as the journal's editorial assistants. We find that in 2020 women performed staggeringly more service work than men relative to their rates of manuscript submission. Our findings disrupt the discourse of “a return to normal,” which ignores the differential effects of our collective pandemic experience. 

Gendered disruptions in academic publishing during COVID‐19

Due to climate change, rural Canadian communities living in boreal regions can expect more intense and frequent wildfires. People’s experiences of wildfire hazards are differentiated by intersecting social factors such as age, gender, culture, and socio-economic status, as well as by social structures that enable or limit adaptation. This study engaged two Northern Saskatchewan communities in a process of co-developing a post-disaster learning framework and companion guidebook to support ongoing adaptation to climate hazards, enabled by the use of an intersectional feminist standpoint methodology. This methodology influenced both the process and outcomes of the research, which involved 18 interviews conducted with study community members and a workshop with a subset of the interview cohort. The intersectional feminist standpoint methodology facilitated insight into how intersecting social identity factors (e.g., gender, age, socio-economic status, and geography) shaped experiences of wildfire, as well as the need for and potential of post-disaster learning at the community level. In this paper, we focus on methodological insights for researchers and communities who seek to co-create knowledge and learning opportunities. In particular, we note the methodological impacts on research design choices, learning through the research process, and lessons learned through conducting community-engaged research during the early days of another kind of crisis: the COVID-19 pandemic.

Learning from wildfire: co-creating knowledge using an intersectional feminist standpoint methodology

Tempelhofer Feld, in Berlin, Germany, is a large urban park located in the south of the city. Returned to the residents as a public green area in the early 2000s, the park has since become increasingly popular. Plans for a development of the area (including turning part of the area into a residential compound) have been consistently met with strong opposition. This paper looks at how regular users (with a background of migration) engage with the park, across a variety of activities and social constellations. Even though, to a casual observer, the park doesn’t seem to offer much more than a flat sequence of grassy lawns and asphalt lanes, there is, among regulars, a strong consensus on the beauty of the place. It’s an experiential (as opposed to contemplative) beauty, that enhances people’s sense of emplacement, of being present in space, as well as their affective entanglement with it. Through their relationship with the park, and among themselves, the research participants reorient themselves as Berlin residents, negotiating and reconfiguring the often narrow confines of their situation as migrants.
