Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a thriving networking architecture that has gained popularity in recent years, particularly as an enabling technology to foster paradigms like edge computing. SDN separates the control and data planes, which are later on synchronised via a control protocol such as OpenFlow. In-band control is a type of SDN control plane deployment in which the control and data planes share the same physical network. It poses several challenges, such as security vulnerabilities, network congestion, or data loss. Nevertheless, despite these challenges, in-band control also presents significant opportunities, including improved network flexibility and programmability, reduced costs, and increased reliability. Benefiting from the previous advantages, diverse in-band control designs exist in the literature, with the objective of improving the operation of SDN networks. This paper surveys the different approaches that have been proposed so far towards the advance in in-band SDN control, based on four main categories: automatic routing, fast failure recovery, network bootstrapping, and distributed control. Across these categories, detailed summary tables and comparisons are presented, followed by a discussion on current trends a challenges in the field. Our conclusion is that the use of in-band control in SDN networks is expected to drive innovation and growth in the networking industry, but efforts for holistic and full-fledged proposals are still needed.

A Comprehensive Survey of In-Band Control in SDN: Challenges and Opportunities

Software Defined Networking (SDN) has emerged as a programmable approach for provisioning and managing network resources by defining a clear separation between the control and data forwarding planes. Nowadays SDN has gained significant attention in the military domain. Its use in the battlefield communication facilitates the end-to-end interactions and assists the exploitation of edge computing resources for processing data in the proximity. However, there are still various challenges related to the security and interoperability among several heterogeneous, dynamic, intermittent, and data packet technologies like multi-bearer network (MBN) that need to be addressed to leverage the benefits of SDN in tactical environments. In this chapter, we explicitly analyse these challenges and review the current research initiatives in SDN-enabled tactical networks. We also present a taxonomy on SDN-based tactical network orchestration according to the identified challenges and map the existing works to the taxonomy aiming at determining the research gaps and suggesting future directions.

Automation Network Selection: A Reference Manual, 2nd Edition

In-Band enhanced Hybrid Domain Discovery Protocol (ieHDDP) is a novel integral approach for hybrid Software-Defined Networking (SDN) environments that simultaneously provides a topology discovery service and an autonomous control channel configuration in the band. This contribution is particularly relevant since, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first all-in-one proposal for SDN capable of collecting the entire topology information (type of devices, links, etc.) and establishing in-band control channels at once in hybrid SDN environments (composed by SDN/no-SDN, wired/wireless devices), even with isolated SDN devices. ieHDDP facilitates the integration of heterogeneous networks, for example, in 5G/6G scenarios, and the deployment of SDN devices by using a simple exploration mechanism to gather all the required topological information and learn the necessary routes between the control and data planes at the same time. ieHDDP has been implemented in a well-known SDN software switch and evaluated in a comprehensive set of randomized topologies, acknowledging that ieHDDP is scalable in representative scenarios.

ieHDDP: An Integrated Solution for Topology Discovery and Automatic In-Band Control Channel Establishment for Hybrid SDN Environments

The proliferation of intelligent Machine-to-Machine (M2M) environments provided by the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to an increase in concurrent communications, thereby generating new demands in terms of capacity, performance, latency, and network efficiency that must be addressed. While it is true that the fifth generation of mobile technologies (5G) is already in place, addressing some of the mentioned needs, the upcoming the sixth generation of mobile technologies (6G) communication network is positioned as a technology to address future requirements, with a particular emphasis in the field of IoT. 6G harnesses the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technology as a pivotal component of its architecture due to the flexibility and programmability it offers to enhance performance and optimize the network’s backbone. However, the SDN paradigm has drawbacks in IoT environments, such as the connectivity scheme between each network node and the SDN controller. This paper introduces the implementation of a scalable SDN in-band control protocol, which leverages the data network for control information transmission, particularly suitable for IoT networks. This implementation has been designed and implemented for both wired and wireless networks, utilizing the Basic OpenFlow User-space Software Switch (BOFUSS).

A scalable SDN in-band control protocol for IoT networks in 6G environments

Adoption of Software-defined Networking (SDN) in critical environments, such as factory automation, avionics and smart-grid networks, will require in-band control. In such networks, the out-of-band control model, prevalent in data center deployments, is inapplicable due to high wiring costs and installation efforts. Existing designs for seamlessly enabling in-band control plane cater only for single-controller operation, assume proprietary switch modifications, and/or require a high number of manual configuration steps, making them non-resilient to failures and hard to deploy. To address these concerns, we design two nearly completely automated bootstrapping schemes for a multi-controller in-band network control plane resilient to link, switch, and controller failures. One assumes hybrid OpenFlow/legacy switches with (R)STP and the second uses an incremental approach that circumvents (R)STP. We implement both schemes as OpenDaylight extensions, and qualitatively evaluate their performance with respect to: the time required to converge the bootstrapping procedure; the time required to dynamically extend the network; and the resulting flow table occupancy. The proposed schemes enable fast bootstrapping of a robust, in-band managed network with support for seamless redundancy of control flows and network extensions, while ensuring interoperability with off-the-shelf switches. The presented schemes were demonstrated successfully in an operational industrial network with critical fail-safe requirements.
