This research investigated the extent to which low self-esteem, relationship dissatisfaction, and relationship insecurity exacerbate intention to break up in romantic relationships. Results from the study indicated that low self-esteem contributed to individuals having negative thoughts, emotions, and evaluation of their romantic relationships. Quite importantly, findings in the study showed that insecurity and relationship dissatisfaction partially mediate the relationship between low self-esteem and intention to break up in romantic relationships. Findings also indicated that due to low self-esteem, individuals may begin to doubt the level of trust, love and care accorded them by their romantic partners.

The mediation role of perceived social support in the relationship between interpersonal competence and self-esteem in married individuals

A data set of 1030 individuals (including 392 married couples) was employed to create a comprehensive picture of the interactive impact of many variables on marital satisfaction. Predictor variables were eventually combined into 20 composite variables and structural equation modeling resulted in 78.6% of the variance in marital satisfaction being explained for men; 79.8% for women. The primary dependent variable was Relational Satisfaction. Primary predictors (all composite variables) included emotional engagement, emotional-regulation skills, destructive interactions, shared activities, family and friend support, compatibility, strength of personal identity, accuracy of perception (of their partner), personality traits, temperaments (from the DISC measure), improvement over time, and positive illusions. To measure change over time, participants answered questions for both “now” and in the “first year of marriage”. Further, a criss-cross technique (rate self and partner across all variables) facilitated many comparative predictors. The structural models found the primary predictors of relational satisfaction (with only minor differences between mens’ and womens’ models) to be: emotional engagement (with β values of .56 for both), family and friend support, improvement over time, accuracy of perception, (absence of) destructive interactions, compatibility and positive traits. Equally important were predictors of emotional engagement—the greatest predictor of relational satisfaction: emotional-regulation skills (men), emotional-regulation skills (women), shared activities, accuracy of perception, family and friend support, and looking for the good explained 75% of the variance in the emotional engagement. 

Marital Satisfaction: Toward an Integrated Understanding. Structural Equation Modelling Helps Unravel the Complexity of Factors that Impact Marital Success

The tendency to display transgression for individuals we consider close is higher than those we consider distant. And not always there is a "forgive and forget" in such interpersonal dynamics. This revenge-seeking may emerge as spitefulness in romantic relationships, in subtle forms of humor, and is linked with self-esteem. The present research aims to study whether humor and self-esteem increases or de-creases spitefulness among couples. A total of 100 participants (73 female, 27 male) from Mumbai and Bengaluru were asked to fill out a Google form consisting of the Humor Styles Questionnaire, Collective Self-Esteem Scale, and Spitefulness Scale respectively. The statistical tools used were – Pearson's product-moment correlation, two-way ANOVA, and one-way ANOVA. Highlights of the results section revealed there is a significant correlation between aggressive humor and spitefulness, and humor and self-esteem. Spitefulness was unrelated to other humor styles as well as self-esteem. Additional one-way ANOVA revealed difference in humor due to gender and relationship status, while self-esteem and spitefulness have little impact due to gender and relationship status. The study also high-lights the need for a new scale for measuring spitefulness and suggests future studies for a deeper understanding of the underplaying factors associated with spitefulness among couples. The study concludes by suggesting current romantic partners to develop higher self-esteem and benign humor styles to enhance romantic relationship.

Humor, Self-Esteem, and Spite: Unraveling the Dynamics in Romantic Relationships

Fluctuations of state self-esteem, in-the-moment self-esteem, may influence our perceptions romantic relationships in either a positive or negative light. This research, using a subliminal priming task, aimed to test whether manipulation of state self-esteem would cause a significant difference in either relationship satisfaction or, if single, relationship perception. We expected individuals that had their self-esteem positively primed would have higher relationship satisfaction or relationship perception. We also expected a similar relationship for those who had their self-esteem negatively influenced. Some strong correlations were found between self-esteem and relationship satisfaction that leave implications for further research on this topic.
