Smart grid is referred to a modernized power grid which can mitigate fault detection and allow self-healing of the system without the intervention of operators. This article proposes an innovative analytical formulation using Markov method to evaluate electric power distribution system reliability in smart grids, which incorporates the impact of smart monitoring on the overall system reliability. An accurate reliability model of the main network components and the communication infrastructure have been also considered in the methodology. The proposed approach was applied to a well-known test bed Roy Billinton Test System and various reliability case studies with monitoring provision and monitoring deficiency are analyzed. This article involves the developing possibilities of communication technologies and next-generation control systems of the entire smart network based on the real-time monitoring and modern control system to achieve a reliable, economical, safe, and high efficiency of electricity. The implementations indicate that using an appropriate set of the smart grid monitoring devices for power system components can virtually influence all the reliability indices although the amount of improvement varies between techniques. The proposed approach determined that smart monitoring for which components of the electric power distribution systems are tailored and deduce to major economical benefits. An analytical methodology for assessment of smart monitoring impact on future electric power distribution system reliability

The operational voltage of the hybrid power filter (HPF) is much lower than an active power filter (APF) when reactive power of inductive loads is compensated. The active power transfer capability of the HPF is utilized to achieve PV generator integration in this paper. The proposed system is a low cost solution for power quality conditioning and PV integration in modern buildings. The low dc voltage reduces the energy stored in the dc capacitor and is safer for building-integrated PV systems. In order to reduce switching loss and switching noises, an adaptive dc voltage controller is proposed. The dc-link voltage as well as the power flow controllable range of the HPF is adaptively changed according to different loading and PV generator output. Simulation and experimental results are provided to show the effectiveness of the adaptive dc voltage control method.

Adaptive DC voltage control for single-phase hybrid filter with PV integration capability

This paper presents a capacitive-coupling voltage source inverter (VSI) for single-phase grid connected photovoltaic (PV) system, which can achieve active power transfer and reactive power compensation simultaneously. The operation principle of the capacitive-coupling VSI was analyzed and compared with the conventional inductive-coupling VSI. Theoretical study indicates that capacitive-coupling grid-connected VSI can achieve the required power control with lower inverter voltage rating, which reduces the initial cost and operational losses. A single-phase PV integration system with capacitive-coupling VSI is implemented, in which a boost-half-bridge dc-dc converter is used. The boost-half-bridge dc-dc converter is selected due to its low cost, simple control method and high efficiency. The adaptive duty cycle control method for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is used. The control system of the capacitive-coupling VSI is also implemented, which can transfer the active power from the dc converter to the ac grid and keep the dc-link voltage stable. Simulation results are provided to verify the validity of the capacitive-coupling VSI for PV integration. Comparison with inductive-coupling VSI is also done, which show that the capacitive-coupling VSI is able to transfer the same amount of power with a much lower dc-link voltage.

Capacitive-coupling inverter for PV integration: Analysis and implementation

Electric grid has been transformed to smart grid by incorporating ICT infrastructure. This transformation of a smart grid from a conventional grid is necessary to achieve environmental targets. Smart grid technology has significantly changed the way of generation and distribution of electricity which not only helps to decrease the demand of power and cost savings, but also can comparably improve the reliability and efficiency of power system. An electric vehicle (EV), a component of smart grid is the vehicle which uses electric motors for moving the vehicle. Itinerary planning of EV is to manage the whole journey without exhausting battery capacity. The aim of the proposed model is to find the optimized route for an EV in terms of distance travelled and cost of charging from any source to destination. In this paper, an algorithm has been designed to calculate the optimized route by using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) technique.

An efficient itinerary management scheme for electric vehicles using ACO

Smart Grid (SG) is defined to provide power grid with more choices of information services. To efficiently implement modern communication techniques into SG, LTE is widely considered to be most competitive candidate. Although LTE performs well in nowadays mobile communication industry, it still needs optimization during the implementing process. A feature that makes SG communication different from mobile communication is that the Smart Meters, which is considered to be the users in SG-LTE network, don't deserve strictly fair service in the network. In this paper, we proposed a priority-based LTE packet scheduler. Simulation result shows that the proposed solution efficiently improved high priority users' performance. Along with some acceptable system performance cost, the proposed scheduler is suitable for SG communication environment.

Priority-based LTE down-link packet scheduling for Smart Grid communication

Smart grid technology will fundamentally change the current distribution and electricity way, it not only helps to reduce the power demand, cost savings, but also can significantly improve power system reliability and efficiency. Smart grid using the new network technology, including can be used for real-time monitoring of power using a sensor and can be used to automatically change to reduce power consumption controller. However, the smart grid also brings security and privacy, large-scale distributed sensor management system and other complex issues. This paper introduces the concept of smart grid and functional characteristics of smart grid technology, summed up the research situation at home and abroad and the significance of developing smart grid. Based on the analysis of the smart grid, smart grid will be the development trend of modern power system. At the same time on the smart grid technology are reviewed in this paper, cited several key technologies of smart grid technologies, and points out the problems and challenges.
