Structural design toward functional materials by electrospinning: A review

\n\nBackground: Photoluminescent materials have been used for diverse applications in the\nfields of science and engineering, such as optical storage, biological labeling, noninvasive imaging,\nsolid-state lasers, light-emitting diodes, theranostics/theragnostics, up-conversion lasers, solar cells,\nspectrum modifiers, photodynamic therapy remote controllers, optical waveguide amplifiers and\ntemperature sensors. Nanosized luminescent materials could be ideal candidates in these applications.\n\nObjective: This review is to present a brief overview of photoluminescent nanofibers obtained\nthrough electrospinning and their emission characteristics.\n\nMethods: To prepare bulk-scale nanosized materials efficiently and cost-effectively, electrospinning\nis a widely used technique. By the electrospinning method, a sufficiently high direct-current voltage\nis applied to a polymer solution or melt; and at a certain critical point when the electrostatic force\novercomes the surface tension, the droplet is stretched to form nanofibers. Polymer solutions or melts\nwith a high degree of molecular cohesion due to intermolecular interactions are the feedstock. Subsequent\ncalcination in air or specific gas may be required to remove the organic elements to obtain\nthe desired composition.\n\nResults: The luminescent nanofibers are classified based on the composition, structure, and synthesis\nmaterial. The photoluminescent emission characteristics of the nanofibers reveal intriguing features\nsuch as polarized emission, energy transfer, fluorescent quenching, and sensing. An overview of the\nprocess, controlling parameters and techniques associated with electrospinning of organic, inorganic\nand composite nanofibers are discussed in detail. The scope and potential applications of these luminescent\nfibers also conversed.\n\nConclusion: The electrospinning process is a matured technique to produce nanofibers on a large\nscale. Organic nanofibers have exhibited superior fluorescent emissions for waveguides, LEDs and\nlasing devices, and inorganic nanofibers for high-end sensors, scintillators, and catalysts. Multifunctionalities\ncan be achieved for photovoltaics, sensing, drug delivery, magnetism, catalysis, and\nso on. The potential of these nanofibers can be extended but not limited to smart clothing, tissue\nengineering, energy harvesting, energy storage, communication, safe data storage, etc. and it is\nanticipated that in the near future, luminescent nanofibers will find many more applications in diverse\nscientific disciplines.\n

A Review on Electrospun Luminescent Nanofibers: Photoluminescence Characteristics and Potential Applications

A novel nanostructure of {[Eu(BA)3phen + Tb(BA)3phen]/PMMA}//[PANI/Fe3O4/PMMA] Janus nanoribbons with tunable luminescent–electrical–magnetic performance has been successfully fabricated by electrospinning technology using a specially designed parallel spinneret. The morphology and properties of the final products were investigated in detail by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), biological microscopy (BM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), a Hall effect measurement system, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results reveal that the Janus nanoribbons simultaneously possess excellent luminescent performance, electrical conduction and magnetic properties due to the peculiar nanostructure of Janus nanoribbons. The luminescent–electrical–magnetic trifunctional Janus nanoribbons possess better performances than their counterpart [Eu(BA)3phen + Tb(BA)3phen]/Fe3O4/PANI/PMMA composite nanoribbons which exhibit very weak excitation and emission spectra. The fluorescence intensity of Janus nanoribbons is ca. 70 times higher than that of composite nanoribbons. The color, luminescent intensity, electrical conductivity and magnetic property of the Janus nanoribbons can be tuned by adjusting different amounts of rare earth complexes, PANI and Fe3O4 NPs, respectively. The obtained Janus nanoribbons have potential applications in molecular electronics, microwave absorption and display devices owing to their excellent trifunctionality. Moreover, the construction technique for the Janus nanoribbons is of universal significance for the fabrication of other multifunctional Janus nanoribbons.

Magnetic nanofiber has been widely applied in biomedical fields due to its distinctive size, morphology, and properties. We proposed a novel needleless electrospinning method to prepare magnetic nanofibers from the self-assembling “Taylor cones” of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP)/Fe3O4 ferrofluid (PFF) under the coincident magnetic and electric fields. The results demonstrated that a static PFF Rosensweig instability with a conical protrusion could be obtained under the magnetic field. The tip of the protrusion emitted an electrospinning jet under the coincident magnetic and electric fields. The needleless electrospinning showed a similar process phenomenon in comparison with conventional electrospinning. The prepared nanofibers were composed of Fe3O4 particles and PVP polymer. The Fe3O4 particles aggregated inside and on the surface of the nanofibers. The nanofibers prepared by needleless electrospinning exhibited similar morphology compared with the conventionally electrospun nanofibers. The nanofibers also exhibited good ferromagnetic and magnetic field responsive properties.
