The investigation of inexpensive, effective, environmentally friendly next-generation energy storage devices is an urgent task due to the discontinuities of new generation energy that hinder their further widely application. Among the multitudinous explored energy storage devices, supercapacitors have been regarded as the most potential energy storage systems thanks to their distinctive features of ultralong cycling lifespan, ultrafast charge/discharge process, and high power density compared with batteries and conventional capacitors. Nevertheless, the existing defect of low energy density has always been a bottleneck problem to their long-term development and widespread applications. Meanwhile, the electrodes are the core component in supercapacitors, determining the electrochemical performance directly. Consequently, transition metal oxides were chosen as the promoting materials to design and fabricate appropriately and rationally act as supercapacitor electrodes to harvest the outstanding electrochemical performance of both high energy and power density simultaneously. Here, we summarized the recent advances in transition metal oxides with different dimensions as electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors, including zero-dimensional nanostructures (nanospheres, nanocrystals, nanoparticles), one-dimensional nanostructures (nanorods, nanowires and nanotubes), two-dimensional nanostructures (nanoflakes, nanoplatelets), three-dimensional nanostructures (spherical structure, hollow structure, flower-like structure, honeycomb structure, mesoporous structure), and the corresponding supercapacitors electrochemical performance, expecting to make a thorough inquiry of the relationship between structure and property for highlighting the route to design and synthesis high-performance transition metal oxide-based supercapacitor electrodes.

Superhydrophobic materials are investigated extensively because of their excellent surface properties, such as self-cleaning, oil-water separation, corrosion resistance, anti-icing, and anti-fogging. Recently, there has also been a lot of interest in hydrophobic or superhydrophobic modifications of cement-based materials. It provides an innovative way to improve the resistance of cement-based materials to external environmental erosion during service. This paper reviews the progress of hydrophobic or superhydrophobic modification of cement-based materials. This work analyses the mechanisms of hydrophobic modification of material surfaces and discusses three hydrophobic modification methods for cement-based materials: templating, external coating, and internal mixing. We also point out the problems of hydrophobic coatings on cement-based materials in mechanical stability and acid-alkali resistance. Further, the comprehensive performance of cement-based materials after hydrophobic modification in terms of hydration and hardening process, waterproofing and impermeability, resistance to aggressive media, and freeze-thaw damage are summarized. And the applications such as self-cleaning, anti-icing of pavements, corrosion protection of coastal structures, and waterproofing of buildings are also listed. Finally, we briefly discuss some problems in the current research and development trends in the future on hydrophobic modification of cement-based materials.

Novel Superhydrophobic Cement-based Materials Achieved by Construction of Hierarchical Surface Structure with FAS/SiO2 Hybrid Nanocomposites

The slow property gains of cement-based materials blended with industrial by-products such as fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), especially at a high dosage, have been ascribed to be the main obstacle of increasing the sustainability of cement concrete industry. In this work, the effects of 1 mass% nanosilica on the properties of heat-cured cement-based materials blended with FA and GGBS were investigated. Three different percentages of FA or GGBS (15, 30 or 40 mass%) and four different curing temperatures (20, 60, 70 and 80 °C) were studied. The mechanical properties, hydration heat, mineralogy phase, calcium hydroxide content, and morphology were measured and analyzed after 1, 3, 7, and 28 days. The increase in 1-day compressive strength of 37.75% and 38.65% could be seen for samples blended with 30 mass% FA and 30 mass% GGBS and cured at 70 °C, respectively. More calcium hydroxide was consumed due to the acceleration effect of nanosilica on the pozzolanic reactivity of added FA and GGBS. More hydrates and a denser microstructure were observed in samples mixed with nanosilica compared with samples without nanosilica. This work showed the feasibility of using a small dosage of nanosilica to improve the properties of heat curing blended cement-based materials while improving greenability.
