A two-stage structure for performing non-linear echo cancellation is described in which a first echo canceller is used to attenuate linear echo components of a microphone signal and a second echo canceller is used to attenuate non-linear echo components of the output signal generated by the first echo canceller. One or both of the echo cancellers may be implemented using closed-form solutions, including a closed form solution for a hybrid method in the frequency domain.

Non-linear echo cancellation

A universal reconfigurable system and method are provided for reducing nonlinear echo and residual echo, and for echo leakage prevention in various time-varying and complex environments is proposed in this invention. According to one embodiment, an echo cancellation system includes (1) an adaptive linear filter implemented in either time-domain or frequency-domain; (2) a nonlinear echo suppression; (3) echo leakage prevention; (4) direct current (DC), low frequency residual echo and noise reduction; (5) time-domain nonlinear processor (NLP) to reduce the residual echo; and (6) frequency-domain NLP to further reduce the residual echo. The echo cancellation system is universally applicable to acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) and/or electrical echo cancellation applications. In terms of AEC, this invention is reconfigurable for one or more microphones and/or one or more reference channels. The numbers of microphones and reference channels are user configurable.

A double-talk detector finds an estimated power value of near end background noise based on a residual signal by a noise estimator; the average power of a transmitter input signal by a transmitter average power calculator; the average power of a receiver input signal by a receiver average power calculator; and an estimated echo path attenuation value through a predetermined echo path attenuation value estimating process based on the estimated power value of the near end background noise, the average power of the transmitter input signal and the average power of the receiver input signal by an attenuation value estimator. The double-talk detector detects a double-talk state based on the estimated echo path attenuation value, the average power of the transmitter input signal and the average power of the receiver input signal by a double-talk determiner to control update of the coefficient of an adaptive filter.

An echo canceler has an adaptive filter that generates an echo replica signal from a far-end signal. The filter coefficients of the adaptive filter are updated according to a residual error signal, which is obtained by subtracting the echo replica signal from a near-end signal to cancel echo. A background noise estimator estimates the near-end background noise power level from the residual error signal. A step size calculator uses the estimated near-end background noise power in determining the step size of the adaptive updating of the filter coefficients. When the estimated near-end background noise level is high, a small step size is used, which improves echo cancellation under these conditions. When the estimated near-end background noise level is low, a larger step size is used to permit rapid convergence of the filter coefficients.

The echo canceller can dynamically reduce echo using an improved energy estimator and an improved adaptive filter. The improved energy estimator can determine if conversation is in a single talk period or a double talk period based on the combined energy of both the near end background noise and speech. The improved adaptive filter can reduce echo by dynamically changing adaptation speed or step size. In double talk, the adaptive filter(s) can dynamically slow-down or stop adaptation. In single talk, the filter can dynamically increase the speed of adaptation to improve accuracy, or decrease adaptation speed for stability.

An echo cancellation system includes an echo canceller unit, a nonlinear echo detection unit, and a nonlinear echo suppression unit. The echo canceller unit (e.g., an adaptive filter) receives a reference signal and a near-end signal, derives an echo estimate signal based on the reference and near-end signals, cancels a portion of echo in the near-end signal based on the echo estimate signal, and provides an intermediate signal having residual echo. The nonlinear echo detection unit detects for large nonlinear echo in the echo estimate signal. The nonlinear echo suppression unit suppresses large nonlinear echo in the first intermediate signal based on a variable gain, which may be adjusted lower if large nonlinear echo is detected and higher otherwise.
