Single nanocrystalline tungsten carbide (WC) was first synthesized on the tips of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VA-CNTs) with a hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HF-CVD) method through the directly reaction of tungsten metal with carbon source. The VA-CNTs with preservation of vertical structure integrity and alignment play an important role to support the nanocrystalline WC growth. With the high crystallinity, small size, and uniform distribution of WC particles on the carbon support, the formed WC–CNTs material exhibited an excellent catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), giving a η10 (the overpotential for driving a current of 10 mA cm–2) of 145 mV, onset potential of 15 mV, exchange current density@ 300 mV of 117.6 mV and Tafel slope values of 72 mV dec–1 in acid solution, and η10 of 137 mV, onset potential of 16 mV, exchange current density@ 300 mV of 33.1 mV and Tafel slope values of 106 mV dec–1 in alkaline media, respectively. WC Nanocrystals Grown on Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotubes: An Efficient and Stable Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Environmental pollution has been a known threat to our world due to the rapid urbanization, changing lifestyle of people, and modern industrialization. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel sensing approaches having promising performance with high reliability and sensitivity for the precise monitoring of various pollutants. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been intensively investigated by many researchers as electrode modifiers for electrochemical sensing due to their excellent properties and efficiency. Diverse MOF-based electrochemical sensing systems are applied for environmental analysis for the sensitive, rapid and cost-effective determination of various analytes because of their unique structures, and properties, including the tunable pore size, high surface area, high catalytic activity, and high density of active sites. The aim of this review article is to evaluate the application of MOFs in the electrochemical sensing of environmental pollutants including heavy metal ions, pesticides, phenolic compounds, nitroaromatic compounds, antibiotics, nitrite, and hydrazine. Current limitations and future directions for the application of MOF-based electrochemical sensors for the detection of environmental pollutants are discussed.

Metal–Organic Frameworks for Electrocatalysis: Beyond Their Derivatives

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 is obtained rapidly within 30 min via ultrasonic-assisted solvothermal method. The structure, elemental composition and morphology are investigated by X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray detector, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller. The results show that Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanocrystals possess cubic sodalite-related structure and provide more active sites for adsorption. Furthermore, the prepared Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanocrystals have been examined for the electrochemical sensor of dopamine using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry techniques. The electrochemical studies demonstrate that the modified electrode displayed enhanced catalytic activity in the process of oxidation of dopamine when the working potential is −100 mV. Additionally, we use the sensor to detect dopamine linearly over a concentration range from 5.0 × 10−8 to 2.0 × 10−5 M with a lower detection limit of 1.95 × 10−7 M (S/N = 3). Importantly, Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanocrystals modified electrode showes favorable anti-interference ability and long-term stability.
