Human activity recognition (HAR) systems attempt to automatically identify and analyze human activities using acquired information from various types of sensors. Although several extensive review papers have already been published in the general HAR topics, the growing technologies in the field as well as the multi-disciplinary nature of HAR prompt the need for constant updates in the field. In this respect, this paper attempts to review and summarize the progress of HAR systems from the computer vision perspective. Indeed, most computer vision applications such as human computer interaction, virtual reality, security, video surveillance and home monitoring are highly correlated to HAR tasks. This establishes new trend and milestone in the development cycle of HAR systems. Therefore, the current survey aims to provide the reader with an up to date analysis of vision-based HAR related literature and recent progress in the field. At the same time, it will highlight the main challenges and future directions.

Vision-based human activity recognition: a survey

Sign language, as a different form of the communication language, is important to large groups of people in society. There are different signs in each sign language with variability in hand shape, motion profile, and position of the hand, face, and body parts contributing to each sign. So, visual sign language recognition is a complex research area in computer vision. Many models have been proposed by different researchers with significant improvement by deep learning approaches in recent years. In this survey, we review the vision-based proposed models of sign language recognition using deep learning approaches from the last five years. While the overall trend of the proposed models indicates a significant improvement in recognition accuracy in sign language recognition, there are some challenges yet that need to be solved. We present a taxonomy to categorize the proposed models for isolated and continuous sign language recognition, discussing applications, datasets, hybrid models, complexity, and future lines of research in the field.

A multi-stream convolutional neural network for sEMG-based gesture recognition in muscle-computer interface

This manuscript identifies and documents unsolved problems and research challenges in the extended reality (XR) domain (i.e., virtual (VR), augmented (AR), and mixed reality (MR)). The manuscript is structured to include technology, design, and human factor perspectives. The text is visualization/display-focused, that is, other modalities such as audio, haptic, smell, and touch, while important for XR, are beyond the scope of this paper. We further narrow our focus to mainly geospatial research, with necessary deviations to other domains where these technologies are widely researched. The main objective of the study is to provide an overview of broader research challenges and directions in XR, especially in spatial sciences. Aside from the research challenges identified based on a comprehensive literature review, we provide case studies with original results from our own studies in each section as examples to demonstrate the relevance of the challenges in the current research. We believe that this paper will be of relevance to anyone who has scientific interest in extended reality, and/or uses these systems in their research.

A review and categorization of techniques on device-free human activity recognition

Hand gesture recognition serves as a key for overcoming many difficulties and providing convenience for human life. The ability of machines to understand human activities and their meaning can be utilized in a vast array of applications. One specific field of interest is sign language recognition. This paper provides a thorough review of state-of-the-art techniques used in recent hand gesture and sign language recognition research. The techniques reviewed are suitably categorized into different stages: data acquisition, pre-processing, segmentation, feature extraction and classification, where the various algorithms at each stage are elaborated and their merits compared. Further, we also discuss the challenges and limitations faced by gesture recognition research in general, as well as those exclusive to sign language recognition. Overall, it is hoped that the study may provide readers with a comprehensive introduction into the field of automated gesture and sign language recognition, and further facilitate future research efforts in this area.
