The hybrid medium access control MAC system is configurable to the type of communication required to support a desired application or service. The MAC system analyzes services requested from a settop terminal, or a network controller client, and determines the best MAC component for transmitting signals upstream based on the resources required by the service and the available network resources. A portion of the upstream channel spectrum is allocated to each of the MAC components: 1) POP; 2) assigned static TDMA; 3) assigned dynamic multi-rate TDMA; and 4) random slot reservation-dynamic slot allocation TDMA. Depending upon the communication requirements of the service desired, the configurable MAC system will select the MAC component best suited to support the service. A frequency agile transmitter is then tuned to the channel which has been preallocated for the selected MAC component(s). As communication traffic varies over time, the system reallocates portions of the upstream channel spectrum among the different MAC components and may also reconfigure a specific MAC component.

A system which avoids the bandwidth inefficiencies of simply providing multiple separate and independent channels for distributing data services over television compatible networks by considering the multiple channels as one unit and managing them as one unit with an upstream bandwidth management unit. This bandwidth management unit dynamically assigns active users to unused bandwidth among multiple channels. To accomplish this, the bandwidth management unit records each request for channel bandwidth that is made, each request that is being actively fulfilled, and each request that has been completed. Thus, data service providers, such as multimedia services, can efficiently use multiple 6 megahertz television network compatible channels to distribute their data to many requesters/users at high rates of speed over a relatively inexpensive existing network.

Dynamic channel assignment for TCP/IP data transmitted via cable television channels by managing the channels as a single sub network

A method and system is provided for receiving sets of program requests from a plurality of subscriber locations and delivering programs that match or closely match the selected programming preferences or content requests. A processor at a cable headend registers the selected programming preferences for a given programming period and applies optimization techniques in an effort to have the communications equipment multicast each preference, rather than pointcast, in order to reduce the operating costs of the service provider.

There is disclosed a video distribution server (180) for use in a communication network (140) capable of communicating with a plurality of subscribers seeking to download video files and a plurality of video content servers (150, 160, 170) capable of providing the video files. The video distribution server (180) extends an expired rental period of a first video file already downloaded to a first subscriber. The video distribution server (180) comprises a first controller (222) for receiving from the first subscriber a first video rental extension message requesting extension of the expired rental period of the first video file. The first controller (222), in response to receipt of the first video rental extension message, transmits to a first one of the plurality of video content servers (150) having the first video file a rental extension request message comprising a subscriber identifier associated with a first video player (112) associated with the first subscriber. The rental extension request message causes the first video content server (150) to transmit a rental extension authorization message to the first video player (112) when the first video player (112) subsequently transmits the subscriber identifier to the first video content server (150).

System for extending a rental period of downloaded video

An efficient resource sharing strategy is proposed for multimedia wireless networks. We assume the channel resource in a wireless system is partitioned into two sets: one for voice calls and one for video calls. In the proposed channel borrowing strategy, voice calls can borrow channels from those pre-allocated to video calls temporarily when all voice channels are busy. A threshold type decision policy is designed such that the channel borrowing request will be granted only if the quality of service (QoS) requirement on video call blocking will not be violated during the duration of channel lending. An analytical model is constructed for evaluating the performance of the channel borrowing strategy in a simplified wireless system and is verified by computer simulations. We found that the proposed channel borrowing scheme can significantly reduce the voice call blocking probability while the increase in video call blocking probability is insignificant.

These services can be extended when optical fibers, equipping tremendous bandwidth, are used to carry the traffic. Most of the newer cable systems are indeed using fibers as the distribution media. In the paper the authors propose a dynamic channel assignment strategy for an integrated-services cable system. The strategy allows the dynamic sharing of channels among the three types of video traffic, the real-time traffic, the broadcast traffic and the delayable traffic. Simulation results show that it can greatly increase the channel utilization without affecting service requirements. >

A wavelength division multiaccess network with buffer sharing among stations is studied. All stations in the network are connected to a passive optical star coupler and each station has a different fixed wavelength laser for transmitting packets. Each station in the network reports its packet backlog to a scheduler which computes and then broadcasts a transmission schedule to all the stations through a control channel in each time slot. A transmission schedule includes two types of assignments: (1) to assign a maximum number of stations for conflict-free transmissions, and (2) to assign to relocation of packets from congested stations to uncongested relaying stations through idling transceivers for distributed buffer sharing. The major benefit is the reduction of packet loss due to buffer overflow. Results show that as much as 75% of the buffers can be saved with buffer sharing. >
